Download or read book A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector written by Lesya Horyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second open access volume of the handbook series deals with detectors, large experimental facilities and data handling, both for accelerator and non-accelerator based experiments. It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book Synopsis The Conceptual Basis of Quantum Field Theory by : Gerard't Hooft
Download or read book The Conceptual Basis of Quantum Field Theory written by Gerard't Hooft and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relativistic Quantum Field Theory is a mathematical scheme to describethe sub-atomic particles and forces. The basic starting point is that the axiomsof Special Relativity on the one hand and those of Quantum Mechanics on theother, should be combined into one theory. The fundamental ingredients forthis construction are reviewed. A remarkable feature is that the constructionis not perfect; it will not allow us to compute all amplitudes with unlimitedprecision. Yet in practice this theory is more than accurate enough to coverthe entire domain between the atomic scale and the Planck scale, some 20orders of magnitude

Book Synopsis Selected Exercises in Particle and Nuclear Physics by : Lorenzo Bianchini
Download or read book Selected Exercises in Particle and Nuclear Physics written by Lorenzo Bianchini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents more than 300 exercises, with guided solutions, on topics that span both the experimental and the theoretical aspects of particle physics. The exercises are organized by subject, covering kinematics, interactions of particles with matter, particle detectors, hadrons and resonances, electroweak interactions and flavor physics, statistics and data analysis, and accelerators and beam dynamics. Some 200 of the exercises, including 50 in multiple-choice format, derive from exams set by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Research (INFN) over the past decade to select its scientific staff of experimental researchers. The remainder comprise problems taken from the undergraduate classes at ETH Zurich or inspired by classic textbooks. Whenever appropriate, in-depth information is provided on the source of the problem, and readers will also benefit from the inclusion of bibliographic details and short dissertations on particular topics. This book is an ideal complement to textbooks on experimental and theoretical particle physics and will enable students to evaluate their knowledge and preparedness for exams.
