Book excerpt: The detection of anti-cancer drugs in surface water bodies around the globe calls for upgrading currently applied wastewater treatment plants. Therefore one of the main objectives of this PhD thesis was to investigate advanced oxidation processes able to avoid such pollution. In addition of developing technological solutions, characterization of pollution sources was performed in this work. Results evidenced the presence of cytostatic drugs in hospital wastewaters, even though a major part of drug is administrated to patients in the ambulatory regime in Belgium (94%-w). In this work, two advanced oxidation process were investigated: photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) and photochemical oxidation (UV/H2O2). First PMR tests evidenced that catalyst particles were effectively confined in the system when using a ceramic ultrafiltration module at a transmembrane pressure of 3 bar and cross flow velocity of 3 m/s. Further photocatalytic tests showed that secondary wastewater effluent hindered the formation of OH radicals responsible for pollutants degradation. A successive filtration method of the investigated matrix highlighted that ionic species hindered more the removal rates than the natural organic matter. When comparing PMR and UV/H2O2 processes with an economic and life cycle analysis, the UV/H2O2 process scored best. However, the formation of toxic by-products was observed during the reaction of OH radicals with compounds present in the real water matrices investigated. Therefore UV/H2O2 stands as a promising technology for advanced water treatment, but still requires further studies to be implemented at large scale.

However, the quality of freshwater resources has continually deteriorated worldwide, both in industrialized countries and in developing countries. Although traditional wastewater technologies are focused on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and bacteria, hundreds of organic pollutants occur in wastewater and affected urban surface waters. These new pollutants are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals that are not often monitored in the environment but have the potential to penetrate the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and/or human health effects. These contaminants are collectively referred to as the "Emerging Contaminants" and are mostly derived from domestic use and occur in trace concentrations ranging from pico to micrograms per litre. Environmental contaminants are recalcitrant for conventional wastewater treatment processes and most of them remain unaffected, leading to the contamination of receiving water. This scenario leads to the need for an advanced wastewater treatment process that can remove environmental contaminants to safely monitor fresh water sources.This book explains the technologies of biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes. The biological wastewater treatment processes presented include: (1) bioremediation of wastewater that includes aerobic treatment (oxidation ponds, aerating lagoons, aerobic bioreactors, active sludge, percolation or drip filters, biological filters, rotating biological contactors, biological removal of nutrients) and anaerobic treatment (anaerobic bioreactors), anaerobic lagoons); (2) phytoremediation of waste water consisting of engineered wetlands, rhizofiltration, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation, phytoaccumulation, Phyto transformation and hyperaccumulators; and (3) mycoremediation of wastewater. Book excerpt: Antibiotics are nonbiodegradable, can survive at aquatic environments for long periods and they have a big potential bio-accumulation in the environment. They are extensively metabolized by humans, animals and plants. After metabolization, antibiotics or their metabolites are excreted into the aquatic environment. Removal of these compounds from the aquatic environment is feasible by different processes. But antibiotics are not treated in conventional wastewater treatment plants efficiently. During the last years studies with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removal of these pharmaceuticals from waters has shown that they can be useful for removing them fully. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can work as alternatives or complementary method in traditional wastewater treatment, and highly reactive free radicals, especially hydroxyl radicals (OH) generated via chemical (O3/H2O2, O3/OH-), photochemical (UV/O3, O3/H2O2) reactions, serve as the main oxidant. This study presents an overview of the literature on antibiotics and their removal from water by advanced oxidation processes. It includes almost all types of antibiotics which are consumed by human and veterinary processes. It was found that most of the investigated advanced oxidation treatment processes for the oxidation of antibiotics in water are direct and indirect photolysis with the combinations of H2O2, TiO2, ozone and Fenton?s reagent.
