Book excerpt: The target and double spin asymmetries of the exclusive pseudoscalar channel $\vec e\vec p\to ep\pi^0$ were measured for the first time in the deep-inelastic regime using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a longitudinally polarized proton target at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The data were collected over a large kinematic phase space and divided into 110 four-dimensional bins of $Q^2$, $x_B$, $-t$ and $\phi$. Large values of asymmetry moments clearly indicate a substantial contribution to the polarized structure functions from transverse virtual photon amplitudes. The interpretation of experimental data in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) provides the first insight on the chiral-odd GPDs $\tilde{H}_T$ and $E_T$, and complement previous measurements of unpolarized structure functions sensitive to the GPDs $H_T$ and $\bar E_T$. Finally, these data provide necessary constraints for chiral-odd GPD parametrizations and will strongly influence existing theoretical handbag models.

The wide kinematic coverage and good resolution of CLAS allowed measurements in full azimuthal range providing an opportunity to extract single and double spin asymmetries proportional to polarized structure functions. Their angular dependencies in hadronic center-of-mass system were analyzed, and extracted moments are compared to recent theoretical handbag-based calculations based on chiral-even and chiral-odd GPDs contributions. The interpretation of present results within the framework of the modified perturbative approach and their use as a constraint for models of the t behavior will be discussed.

Longitudinal target and beam-target asymmetries were extracted over a large range of center-of-mass angles of the pi0 and compared to the unitary isobar model MAID, the dynamic model by Sato and Lee, and the dynamic model DMT. A strong sensitivity to individual models was observed, in particular for the target asymmetry and in the higher invariant mass region. This data set, once included in the global fits of the above models, is expected to place strong constraints on the electrocoupling amplitudes A_1/2 and S_1/2 for the Roper resonance N(1400)P11, and the N(1535)S11 and N(1520)D13 states.

Book excerpt: The experiment SANE (Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment) measured inclusive double polarization electron asymmetries on a proton target at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory in Newport News Virgina. Polarized electrons were scattered from a solid 14NH3 polarized target provided by the University of Virginia target group. Measurements were taken with the target polarization oriented at 80 degrees and 180 degrees relative to the beam direction, and beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV were used. Scattered electrons were detected by a multi-component novel non-magnetic detector package constructed for this experiment. Asymmetries measured at the two target orientations allow for the extraction of the virtual Compton asymmetries A1p and A2p as well as the spin structure functions g1p and g2p. This work addresses the extraction of the virtual Compton asymmetry A1p in the deep inelastic regime. The analysis uses data in the kinematic range from Bjorken x of 0.30 to 0.55, separated into four Q2 bins from 1.9 to 4.7 GeV2.

Transverse and longitudinal spin asymmetry measurements are complementary approaches for probing the nucleon spin structure functions and understanding the QCD dynamics for such phenomena, due to the non-commutative nature of boosts and rotations in relativistic regime. The research presented in this thesis focuses on characterizing the Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries (TSSA) of inclusive pi0 and jet productions in polarized proton collisions at large Feynman (xF) region. Theoretically these observables are explained by means of collinear twist-3 multi-parton correlations. In this picture the asymmetries originate from initial-state twist-3 parton distributions in the polarized proton and/or through the coupling between proton's initial-state transversity distribution and the final-state twist-3 fragmentation functions. The measurement of SSA for forward inclusive pi0 produced in pp collisions up to high transverse momentum helps examine the validity and interplay of these initial- and final-state models.
