Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal0falsefalsefalseMicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Fitzgerald's Craft of Short Fiction offers the first comprehensive study of the four collections of short stories that F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) prepared for publication during his lifetime: Flappers and Philosophers (1920), Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), All the Sad Young Men (1926), and Taps at Reveille (1935). These authorized collections--which include works from the entire range of Fitzgerald's career, from his undergraduate days at Princeton to his final contributions to Esquire magazine--provide an ideal overview of his development as a short story writer. Originally published in 1989, this volume draws upon Fitzgerald's copious personal correspondence, biographical studies, and all available criticism, and analyzes how Fitzgerald perceived his achievements as a writer of short fiction from both artistic and commercial standpoints. Petry pays close attention to the individual stories, exploring how Fitzgerald's growing technical expertise and the evolution of his themes reflect changes in his personal life.

Book excerpt: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: "This Side of Paradise", "The Beautiful and Damned", "The Great Gatsby" (his most famous), and "Tender Is the Night". A fifth, unfinished novel, "The Love of the Last Tycoon", was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair. Fitzgerald's work has been adapted into films many times. His short story, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", was the basis for a 2008 film. "Tender Is the Night" was filmed in 1962, and made into a television miniseries in 1985. "The Beautiful and Damned" was filmed in 1922 and 2010. "The Great Gatsby" has been the basis for numerous films of the same name, spanning nearly 90 years: 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000, and 2013 adaptations. In addition, Fitzgerald's own life from 1937 to 1940 was dramatized in 1958 in "Beloved Infidel".

Book excerpt: Publisher Description (unedited publisher data) Eleven specially-commissioned essays by major Fitzgerald scholars present a clearly written and comprehensive assessment of F. Scott Fitzgerald as a writer and as a public and private figure. No aspect of his career is overlooked, from his first novel published in 1920, through his more than 170 short stories, to his last unfinished Hollywood novel. Contributions present the reader with a full and accessible picture of the background of American social and cultural change in the early decades of the twentieth century. The introduction traces Fitzgerald's career as a literary and public figure, and examines the extent to which public recognition has affected his reputation among scholars, critics, and general readers over the past sixty years. This is the only volume that offers undergraduates, graduates and general readers a full account of Fitzgerald's work as well as suggestions for further exploration of his work. The boy, Basil Duke Lee, is characterized as naive and dreamy. He is thus treated as an outcast among his peers as well as by the school's administrators.Lee's naivete is contrasted with the experienced perspective of an upperclassman, Lewis Crum. Crum resents Lee's carefree nature and his lack of commitment to tradition. The two boys develop a competitive relationship, and it becomes clear that Lee is internally adjusted to the environment while outwardly aloof and unhappy. Unlike Lee, however, Crum comes from wealth, which gives him a palpable advantage at the school.

This one's going to give you pause to reflect, and a second to smile with time left over for a tear. Sounding Taps is a lone bugler's journey in the Duty of Remembrance, each chapter a singular memory of an unheralded hero who could have been laid to rest by the soldiers of the Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. One is. The others rest in peace in small-town cemeteries and forgotten country graveyards, their stories untold. For some, the sweet sound of the author's bugle was the first time since the Civil War the refrain of Taps was sounded for their angels. For hundreds of others, it was simply the first time. And the first time this author let the bugle recall its rightful place was the time he realized being a lone bugler was never lonely. Sounding Taps is not just a moving tribute to the memory of our fallen servicemen and women. It's also a salute to those who wear the honor guard tab, on duty with the military funeral honors detail.
