In taking up the question of the Venusberg in the Tannhauser story, therefore, it is my purpose for the present to confine myself to a consideration of the origin of the mountain of Venus legend itself. Should I succeed in establishing a definite conclusion on this point, I shall have at least made sure of the first important step in the solution of the whole problem. The question of the Venusberg presents many intricacies and has been often considered from various points of view, but no de finite and satisfactory explanation seems yet to have been reached. If in the following discussion an unusual, and, at first sight, im probable point of view is assumed from the outset the reader is asked to reserve judgment until the whole of the tale is told.
