He announces his intention Of return ing to Venus, to abandon himself to lecherous excess and the enchantments Of the goddess. Wolfram tries in vain to dissuade him from his fell purpose; but his doom seems sealed. From her mystic abode, Venus has heard his invocation. A mist, tinged with a rosy and super natural light, seems to fill the atmosphere; and as it clears, first the dancing nymphs, and then Venus herself, are revealed to the view. This magical vision is accompanied in the orchestra by fragments of the Venusberg music, with which the chorus Of Sirens is inter woven, with consummate skill. Book Synopsis The Mountain of Venus in the Tannhäuser Legend by : Philip Stephan Barto
Download or read book The Mountain of Venus in the Tannhäuser Legend written by Philip Stephan Barto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain of Venus in the Tannhauser Legend: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in German in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1910 So closely is the legend of the mountain of Venus bound up with that of Tannhauser in German literature of the middle ages that mention of either brings the other at once to mind. The beautiful volkslied of Tannhauser gives us, as it were, in crys tallized form the whole story and opens to us a field broad enough for almost endless inquiry and investigation. In taking up the question of the Venusberg in the Tannhauser story, therefore, it is my purpose for the present to confine myself to a consideration of the origin of the mountain of Venus legend itself. Should I succeed in establishing a definite conclusion on this point, I shall have at least made sure of the first important step in the solution of the whole problem. The question of the Venusberg presents many intricacies and has been often considered from various points of view, but no de finite and satisfactory explanation seems yet to have been reached. If in the following discussion an unusual, and, at first sight, im probable point of view is assumed from the outset the reader is asked to reserve judgment until the whole of the tale is told. Book Synopsis Classical Music by : Phil G. Goulding
Download or read book Classical Music written by Phil G. Goulding and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MAKE A SOUND INVESTMENT IN CLASSICAL MUSIC Who are the ten most important classical composers? Who in the world was Palestrina? Why did Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" cause a riot? Which five of each important composer's works should you buy? What is a concerto and how does it differ from a sonata? Maybe you don't know the answers to these questions; author Phil Goulding certainly didn't. When Goulding first tried to learn about classical music, he found himself buried in an avalanche of technical terms and complicated jargon--so he decided to write the book he couldn't find. The result is a complete classical music education in one volume. Comprehensive, discriminating, and delightfully irreverent, Classical Music provides such essential information as: * Rankings of the top 50 composers (Bach is #1. Borodin is #50) * A detailed and anecdotal look at each composer's life and work * The five primary works of each composer and specific recommended CDs for each. * Further great works of each composer--if you really like him * Concise explanations of musical terminology, forms, and periods * A guide to the parts and history of the symphony orchestra "This book uses every conceivable gimmick to immerse readers in the richness of classical music: lists, rankings, sidebars devoted to lively anecdotes, and catchy leads." --The Washington Post "One terrific music appreciation book...The information is surprisingly detailed but concisely presented. Goulding's writing style is breezy yet mature....[He] has raised music appreciation from a racket to a service." --The Arizona Daily Star

Book Synopsis A Knight at the Opera by : Leah Garrett
Download or read book A Knight at the Opera written by Leah Garrett and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Knight at the Opera examines the remarkable and unknown role that the medieval legend (and Wagner opera) Tannh user played in Jewish cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyzes how three of the greatest Jewish thinkers of that era, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, and I. L. Peretz, used this central myth of Germany to strengthen Jewish culture and to attack anti-Semitism. Readers will see how Tannh user evolves from a medieval knight to Peretz's pious Jewish scholar in the Land of Israel. The book also discusses how the founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, was so inspired by Wagner's opera that he wrote The Jewish State while attending performances of it. A Knight at the Opera uses Tannh user as a way to examine the changing relationship between Jews and the broader world during the advent of the modern era, and to question if any art, even that of a prominent anti-Semite, should be considered taboo.
