Download or read book Tangled Goods written by Iddo Tavory and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel investigation of pro bono marketing and the relationship between goods, exploring the complex moral dimensions of philanthropic advertising. The advertising industry may seem like one of the most craven manifestations of capitalism, turning consumption into a virtue. In Tangled Goods, authors Iddo Tavory, Sonia Prelat, and Shelly Ronen consider an important dimension of the advertising industry that appears to depart from the industry’s consumerist foundations: pro bono ad campaigns. Why is an industry known for biting cynicism and cutthroat competition also an industry in which people dedicate time and effort to “doing good”? Interviewing over seventy advertising professionals and managers, the authors trace the complicated meanings of the good in these pro bono projects. Doing something altruistic, they show, often helps employees feel more at ease working for big pharma or corporate banks. Often these projects afford them greater creative leeway than they normally have, as well as the potential for greater recognition. While the authors uncover different motivations behind pro bono work, they are more interested in considering how various notions of the good shift, with different motivations and benefits rising to the surface at different moments. This book sheds new light on how goodness and prestige interact with personal and altruistic motivations to produce value for individuals and institutions and produces a novel theory of the relationship among goods: one of the most fraught questions in sociological theory.

Book Synopsis Tangled Destinies by : Johanna Garrison
Download or read book Tangled Destinies written by Johanna Garrison and published by Insight Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If God really loved me, why did this happen?" Have you ever felt that way? Henk certainly did after his father was a victim of the Holocaust and his mother and sister were killed in a bombing raid later described as a mistake. Clenching his fist toward the sky, he cursed God. Jan, raised in Indonesia by a Chinese couple who worshipped Buddha and practiced witchcraft, met Henk after he left Holland as a member of the Royal Dutch Army and was wounded during a revolution. Their marriage was improbable, their life together truly a clash of two cultures-tangled destinies! But when something appears hopeless, miracles can happen! Johanna Garrison shares the captivating story of her parents: the wonders and woes of their marriage, an unlikely path to Christ, and a journey that brings them to America. But just when everything seems wonderful, tragedy strikes again. Their hope-filled story will inspire you to conquer adversity, walk in forgiveness, and become a victor instead of a victim. "I urge you to keep some tissue with you as you read this book. There are moments when you will cry over the adversity described, and then later you will cry with joy over what the Lord did. You will read of trial and tragedy, but you will also experience miracles of God's grace and power. Tangled Destinies is not fiction-it's the real story of how God is always for us, even when life turns against us!" -Dr. George O. Wood. General Superintendent, Assemblies of God. Johanna Garrison has served as a teacher, administrator, conference speaker, and mentor. She is a graduate of Evangel University. In addition, she has partnered with her husband, Alton, in multiple ministry positions including evangelist and pastor as well as serving with him in his offices as Executive Director of U.S. Missions and Assistant General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God. The Garrisons have one daughter, Lizette. They reside in southwest Missouri.

Book Synopsis Democratizing Inequalities by : Caroline W. Lee
Download or read book Democratizing Inequalities written by Caroline W. Lee and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunities to “have your say,” “get involved,” and “join the conversation” are everywhere in public life. From crowdsourcing and town hall meetings to government experiments with social media, participatory politics increasingly seem like a revolutionary antidote to the decline of civic engagement and the thinning of the contemporary public sphere. Many argue that, with new technologies, flexible organizational cultures, and a supportive policymaking context, we now hold the keys to large-scale democratic revitalization. Democratizing Inequalities shows that the equation may not be so simple. Modern societies face a variety of structural problems that limit potentials for true democratization, as well as vast inequalities in political action and voice that are not easily resolved by participatory solutions. Popular participation may even reinforce elite power in unexpected ways. Resisting an oversimplified account of participation as empowerment, this collection of essays brings together a diverse range of leading scholars to reveal surprising insights into how dilemmas of the new public participation play out in politics and organizations. Through investigations including fights over the authenticity of business-sponsored public participation, the surge of the Tea Party, the role of corporations in electoral campaigns, and participatory budgeting practices in Brazil, Democratizing Inequalities seeks to refresh our understanding of public participation and trace the reshaping of authority in today’s political environment.

Download or read book Missions and Preaching written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a connected, relational and multidisciplinary approach (history, ethnography, political science, and theology), Mission and Preaching tackles the notion of mission through the analysis of preaching activities and religious dynamics across Christianity, Islam and Judaism, in the Middle East and North Africa, from the late 19th century until today. The 13 chapters reveal points of contact, exchange, and circulation, considering the MENA region as a central observatory. The volume offers a new chronology of the missionary phenomenon and calls for further cross-cutting approaches to decompartmentalise it, arguing that these approaches constitute useful entry points to shed new light on religious dynamics and social transformations in the MENA region.
