Book Synopsis Alternative Voices by : Imtiaz Hasnain
Download or read book Alternative Voices written by Imtiaz Hasnain and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents Alternative Voices in the contexts of present-day and historical globalisation, the emergence of the knowledge society, increased global-local or glocal migration flows, the explosion of social media, and disparate regional growth that have both impacted and shaped the sociocultural fabric of geopolitical spaces across the world. The volume builds upon twenty-seven contributions that focus upon issues related to language, culture and identity from a multidisciplinary nexus of historical, philosophical and empirically-based traditions. Positioned in post-colonial emic heritage, the research presented here challenges the “monolingual (including monocultural) bias” and the “linguacentric bias” in the Language Sciences. This volume is an important contribution in terms of analyzing and demonstrating issues related to the complexity of culture and language, and their links with social, political, economic forces, particularly the tensions related to glocal identity positions that are evoked and played out in geopolitically heterogeneous spaces. Given its multidisciplinary nature, this volume presents individual comprehensive accounts of complexities that have been poorly understood and inadequately covered in the existing literature – both in Southern and Northern contexts.
Book Synopsis Separatism in North-East India by : Dr. Kunal Ghosh
Download or read book Separatism in North-East India written by Dr. Kunal Ghosh and published by Suruchi Prakashan. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a constant refrain from various political leaders that religion and politics should not be mixed together. Notwithstanding this sloganeering, what we find in real life is often quite opposite. The author Kunal Ghosh, connotes on two North-East regions, Tripura and the BAC (Bodo Autonomous Council) area in Assam where a mixture of religion and politics has produced an explosive situation. If religion can be tied up with language and linguistics it would acquire a direct hold on nationality. This book is intended for those readers particularly from North East India who are actively engaged to the motherland. Readers will be compelled to think after reading this book
Book Synopsis The Languages and Linguistics of South Asia by : Hans Henrich Hock
Download or read book The Languages and Linguistics of South Asia written by Hans Henrich Hock and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With nearly a quarter of the world’s population, members of at least five major language families plus several putative language isolates, South Asia is a fascinating arena for linguistic investigations, whether comparative-historical linguistics, studies of language contact and multilingualism, or general linguistic theory. This volume provides a state-of-the-art survey of linguistic research on the languages of South Asia, with contributions by well-known experts. Focus is both on what has been accomplished so far and on what remains unresolved or controversial and hence offers challenges for future research. In addition to covering the languages, their histories, and their genetic classification, as well as phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, and sociolinguistics, the volume provides special coverage of contact and convergence, indigenous South Asian grammatical traditions, applications of modern technology to South Asian languages, and South Asian writing systems. An appendix offers a classified listing of major sources and resources, both digital/online and printed.

Each volume offers a comprehensive grammatical description of a single language together with fully analyzed sample texts and, if appropriate, a word list and other relevant information which is available on the language in question. There are no restrictions as to language family or area, and although special attention is paid to hitherto undescribed languages, new and valuable treatments of better known languages are also included. No theoretical model is imposed on the authors; the only criterion is a high standard of scientific quality. To discuss your book idea or submit a proposal, please contact Birgit Sievert.
Download or read book Syllable Weight written by Matthew Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the first systematic exploration of a series of phonological phenomena previously thought to be unified under the rubric of syllable weight. Drawing on a typological survey of 400 languages, it is shown that the traditional conception that languages are internally consistent in their weight criteria across weight-based processes is not corroborated by the cross-linguistic survey. Rather than being consistent across phenomena within individual languages, weight turns out to be sensitive to the particular processes involved such that different phenomena display different distributions in weight criteria. The book goes on to explore the motivations behind the process-specific nature of weight, showing that phonetic factors explain much of the variation in weight criteria between phenomena and also the variation in criteria between languages for a single process. The book is unlike other studies in combining an extensive typological survey with detailed phonetic analysis of many languages. The finding that the widely studied phenomenon of syllable weight is not a unified phenomenon, contrary to the established view, is a significant result for the field of theoretical phonology. The book is also an important contribution to the field of phonetically-driven phonology, since it establishes a close link between the phonology of weight and various quantitative phonetic parameters.
