Book Synopsis The Growth Of The Manufacturing Industry In Tanzania by : M. S. Silver
Download or read book The Growth Of The Manufacturing Industry In Tanzania written by M. S. Silver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the evolution of the Tanzanian manufacturing industry since the beginning of colonial rule, this book focuses on the period since independence and especially on the effects of socialist policies resulting from the 1967 Arusha Declaration. Dr. Silver develops volume indices of production for Tanzanian industry as a whole and for individual sectors. He also examines in detail changes in labor productivity, earnings, unit labor costs, investments, and the prices of manufactured goods, paying special attention to the role of government-controlled parastatals, the regional distribution of manufacturing industries, and income inequality. The rapid growth in production and employment and the changing structure of the manufacturing industry, he concludes, is due to high rates of investment in a small number of relatively large establishments, primarily in the parastatal sector.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Tanzania by : Michael F. Lofchie
Download or read book The Political Economy of Tanzania written by Michael F. Lofchie and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of African economic development frequently focus on the daunting challenges the continent faces. From recurrent crises to ethnic conflicts and long-standing corruption, a raft of deep-rooted problems has led many to regard the continent as facing many hurdles to raise living standards. Yet Africa has made considerable progress in the past decade, with a GDP growth rate exceeding five percent in some regions. The African Successes series looks at recent improvements in living standards and other measures of development in many African countries with an eye toward identifying what shaped them and the extent to which lessons learned are transferable and can guide policy in other nations and at the international level. The first volume in the series, African Successes: Governments and Institutions considers the role governments and institutions have played in recent developments and identifies the factors that enable economists to predict the way institutions will function.

Book Synopsis Post-colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa by : Carolyn Bassett
Download or read book Post-colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa written by Carolyn Bassett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National liberation, one of the grand narratives of the twentieth century, has left a weighty legacy of unfulfilled dreams. This book explores the ongoing struggle for legitimate, accountable political leaders in postcolonial Southern Africa, focussing on dilemmas arising when ex-liberation movements form the governments. While the spread of multi-party democracy to most countries in the region is to be celebrated, democratic practice often has been superficial - a limited, elitist politics that relies on the symbols of the liberation struggle to legitimate de facto one-party rule and authoritarian practices. Using country cases from Tanzania, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia, the collection explores three subthemes relevant to postcolonial governance in Southern Africa: how the struggle for liberation shapes the character of political transformation, the nature of rule in one-party dominant states headed by former liberation movements, and the processes of governance and resistance in post-liberation contexts. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Download or read book East African Doctors written by John Iliffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Iliffe's 1998 book is a history of the African medical profession in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from the earliest training of modern medical staff in the 1870s to the present day. Based on extensive research, and dealing exclusively with African doctors, it offers an understanding of professionalisation in the Third World. It describes the recruitment and education of doctors, their understanding and practice of modern medicine, the struggle for international recognition of their qualifications and efforts to develop East African medical systems after independence, and their experiences during a period of political and economic difficulty. The book ends with an account of the significant work of East African doctors in the study and control of AIDS. This is a major contribution to the social history of Africa and to the social history of medicine more broadly.
Download or read book Toxic Aid written by Sebastian Edwards and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years Tanzania was the darling of international aid agencies. During the 1970s it received more assistance per capita than any other nation in the world. And yet, the economy performed dismally: growth was negative, exports collapsed, and poverty increased massively. In the mid 1980s, however, the international community changed tacks and developed an approach based on conditionality and 'program ownership'. Since 1996 the country has grown steadily, and social conditions have improved significantly. This book provides an economic history of Tanzania, since independence in 1961. It covers the policies of African Socialism and the Arusha Declaration, the collapse of the early 1980s, the rocky relationships with the IMF, and the reforms of the 1990s and 2000s.
