Book Synopsis Some Static Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Overlapped-type Tandem-rotor Helicopter at Low Airspeeds by : Robert J. Tapscott
Download or read book Some Static Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Overlapped-type Tandem-rotor Helicopter at Low Airspeeds written by Robert J. Tapscott and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight measurements of some longitudinal static stability characteristics with an overlapped-type tandem-rotor helicopter at low airspeeds are presented. The data show that a critical amount of longitudinal control is required to maintain trimmed flight at certain combinations of airspeed and rate of descent. Estimates based on theoretically predicted interference effects indicate that the front rotor downwash acting on the rear rotor could cause variation of the longitudinal moments of the same order of magnitude as the measured variation.

Excerpt: The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) is faster than contemporary utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s. It is one of the few aircraft of that era, such as the C-130 Hercules and the UH-1 Iroquois, that is still in production and front line service with over 1,179 built to date. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s. The helicopter is now produced by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. Chinooks have been sold to 16 nations with the US Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)) being the largest users. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. In late 1956, the United States Department of the Army announced plans to replace the CH-37 Mojave, which was powered by piston engines, with a new, turbine-powered helicopter. Turbine engines were also a key design feature of the smaller UH-1 "Huey" utility helicopter. Following a design competition, in September 1958, a joint Army-Air Force source selection board recommended that the Army procure the Vertol medium transport helicopter. However, funding for full-scale development was not then available, and the Army vacillated on its design requirements. Some in the Army aviation corps thought that the new helicopter should be a light...

This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike aerofoil-shaped aircraft such as fighter jet or aircraft with aerofoil parts such as wings that use aerofoil lift force for flight and most importantly; have a lot of research material about their aeroelastic behavior easily accessible in the public domain, the tandem rotor helicopter uniquely relies entirely on its rotor blades for lift force during flight and most importantly; has got hardly any trace of research material about its aeroelastic behaviour in the public domain. Aeroelastic disturbances that are associated with more sophisticated heavy-duty Army aircraft such as the tandem rotor helicopter are capable of generating disturbances that are sufficiently violent to cause the almost instantaneous failure of the structure of the helicopter. This studythus aims to analytically model and establish a relation between the nature and variation of the external aerodynamic environment of a helicopter with tandem rotor blades and its internal structural dynamics characteristics, which would be modeled as a series of masses connectedby springs and dampers. This will, in turn, enable the prediction and thus anticipation, through analytic modelling and estimation of acting loads and changes of stiffness and deformation of the sections in and across the helicopter; of aerodynamic safety and failure criteria such as thepitching velocity margin, rolling velocity margin and the margin of the safe payload eccentricity in the fuselage and also enable suggest possible test fixes during the modeling and analysis of the aeroelasticity of the helicopter. The study also aims to analyze the effect of the variation ofthe structural flexibility of the segments of the tandem rotor helicopter and the distribution of loads in the body structure of the helicopter. The necessity to produce better tandem rotor helicopters that have low structural vibration levels, low noise, and enhanced performance willcontinue to motivate researchers all around the world and aeromechanics to develop innovative approaches for the solution of these aeroelasticity challenges. This study will thus contribute to the rare research material about the aeroelastic behavior of tandem rotor helicopters accessibleto the public domain.

Download or read book TRANSMISSION STUDY FOR TANDEM-ROTOR SHAFT-DRIVEN HEAVY-LIFT HELICOPTERS. written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical drive systems for heavy-lift tandem-rotor helicopters were studied. Three- and four-engine configurations were analyzed. Configurations included aft-mounted and fore- and aft-mounted engines, single and dual drive systems, and high-mounted and low-mounted aft planetaries. Weights were estimated. Problems of gear surface durability, multiengine control, and over- running clutches were defined. The effects of increased gear tooth bending fatigue strength, higher bearing capacity, super critical speed shafting, and the use of titanium and improved ferrous metals were evaluated. In the more significant factors, the satisfactory solution of the heavy-lift helicopter drive system lies within the current state-of-the-art.
