The woman is as foolish as she is brave and has a wild heart that’s been a thorn in my side since she arrived on the island. She has me breaking all the rules I set for myself while demanding I break more. The easiest thing would be to distance myself, allow her fate to be out of my hands. Problem is, I still want her. And I don’t see that changing. I’ll have to find a way to tame her instead. A note from Nicole: Taming Liberty is the second book in the dark romance trilogy, Liberating Deceit, and ends on a CLIFFHANGER. It picks back up in the final installment, Claiming Liberty.

Book excerpt: Enjoy book one in this thrilling captive romance trilogy by dark romance author Nicole Cypher... Caged. That’s the word that best describes my current predicament. Kidnapped and taken to a private island full of hungry, depraved men, it seems like my situation can’t get any worse, but, unfortunately, I’m not sure that’s true. The mystery of how I got here reeks of betrayal, and I don’t know how much more of it I can take. It’s starting to seem like lies and deceit are all that I know. The only crumb of comfort I have comes from one of the island residents, a man I’m told to call Mr. A. He isn’t quite like the rest, and he gives me hope I can’t help but cling to in a place like this. I hear the rumors, learn why he keeps me at the island manor instead of taking me for himself, and still, I try to put my trust in him like he asks. Because on an island of monsters, what choice do I have? I want to believe his intentions are pure … but will he turn out to be the biggest liar of them all? A note from Nicole: Caging Liberty is the first book in the 18+ steamy dark romance trilogy, Liberating Deceit, and follows the suspenseful relationship between Angel and Liberty. The whole series is loaded with twists and turns, so get ready for nothing to be as it seems! While it involves a dark theme (island of sex slaves), Angel is no sadist, and he’s more broken than depraved. This book ends on a CLIFFHANGER and picks back up in Taming Liberty.
Download or read book Liberty Is Sweet written by Woody Holton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “deeply researched and bracing retelling” (Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian) of the American Revolution, showing how the Founders were influenced by overlooked Americans—women, Native Americans, African Americans, and religious dissenters. Using more than a thousand eyewitness records, Liberty Is Sweet is a “spirited account” (Gordon S. Wood, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Radicalism of the American Revolution) that explores countless connections between the Patriots of 1776 and other Americans whose passion for freedom often brought them into conflict with the Founding Fathers. “It is all one story,” prizewinning historian Woody Holton writes. Holton describes the origins and crucial battles of the Revolution from Lexington and Concord to the British surrender at Yorktown, always focusing on marginalized Americans—enslaved Africans and African Americans, Native Americans, women, and dissenters—and on overlooked factors such as weather, North America’s unique geography, chance, misperception, attempts to manipulate public opinion, and (most of all) disease. Thousands of enslaved Americans exploited the chaos of war to obtain their own freedom, while others were given away as enlistment bounties to whites. Women provided material support for the troops, sewing clothes for soldiers and in some cases taking part in the fighting. Both sides courted native people and mimicked their tactics. Liberty Is Sweet is a “must-read book for understanding the founding of our nation” (Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin), from its origins on the frontiers and in the Atlantic ports to the creation of the Constitution. Offering surprises at every turn—for example, Holton makes a convincing case that Britain never had a chance of winning the war—this majestic history revivifies a story we thought we already knew.

Book excerpt: When you find out the woman you’ve been sent to kill has been stalking you for months… She was only supposed to be a job… The order to take out the head of the DEA’s daughter, a quiet hermit who lives across the hall from me, should've been a simple request. But Olive Solace isn't a simple woman. I’ve been keeping tabs on her, but a closer look reveals she’s been watching me as well, foolishly making me the object of her romantic obsession. She’s strange, a nervous wreck with a chaotically dark mind that would be frightening to most, but it only draws me into her enigmatic world and turns her into a puzzle I’m eager to solve, a puzzle too precious to waste. Instead of killing her, I choose to save her. A decision that could have deadly consequences for us both. But as her secrets come out, I find that the Bratva may be the least of my worries. There’s another side to Olive Solace… And it’s a little bit crazy. A note from Nicole: Alik is an 18+ dark Russian mafia romance set in the world of the Las Vegas Petrov Bratva. Book Synopsis Liberty from All Masters by : Barry C. Lynn
Download or read book Liberty from All Masters written by Barry C. Lynn and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barry C. Lynn, one of America's preeminent thinkers, provides the clearest statement yet on the nature and magnitude of the political and economic dangers posed by America’s new monopolies in Liberty from All Masters. "Very few thinkers in recent years have done more to shift the debate in Washington than Barry Lynn." —Franklin Foer Americans are obsessed with liberty, mad about liberty. On any day, we can tune into arguments about how much liberty we need to buy a gun or get an abortion, to marry who we want or adopt the gender we feel. We argue endlessly about liberty from regulation and observation by the state, and proudly rebel against the tyranny of course syllabi and Pandora playlists. Redesign the penny today and the motto would read “You ain’t the boss of me.” Yet Americans are only now awakening to what is perhaps the gravest domestic threat to our liberties in a century—in the form of an extreme and fast-growing concentration of economic power. Monopolists today control almost every corner of the American economy. The result is not only lower wages and higher prices, hence a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few. The result is also a stripping away of our liberty to work how and where we want, to launch and grow the businesses we want, to create the communities and families and lives we want. The rise of online monopolists such as Google and Amazon—designed to gather our most intimate secrets and use them to manipulate our personal and group actions—is making the problem only far worse fast. Not only have these giant corporations captured the ability to manage how we share news and ideas with one another, they increasingly enjoy the power to shape how we move and play and speak and think.
Download or read book Taming the Gods written by Ian Buruma and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why religion must be separated from politics if democracy is to thrive around the world For eight years the president of the United States was a born-again Christian, backed by well-organized evangelicals who often seemed intent on erasing the church-state divide. In Europe, the increasing number of radicalized Muslims is creating widespread fear that Islam is undermining Western-style liberal democracy. And even in polytheistic Asia, the development of democracy has been hindered in some countries, particularly China, by a long history in which religion was tightly linked to the state. Ian Buruma is the first writer to provide a sharp-eyed look at the tensions between religion and politics on three continents. Drawing on many contemporary and historical examples, he argues that the violent passions inspired by religion must be tamed in order to make democracy work. Comparing the United States and Europe, Buruma asks why so many Americans—and so few Europeans—see religion as a help to democracy. Turning to China and Japan, he disputes the notion that only monotheistic religions pose problems for secular politics. Finally, he reconsiders the story of radical Islam in contemporary Europe, from the case of Salman Rushdie to the murder of Theo van Gogh. Sparing no one, Buruma exposes the follies of the current culture war between defenders of "Western values" and "multiculturalists," and explains that the creation of a democratic European Islam is not only possible, but necessary. Presenting a challenge to dogmatic believers and dogmatic secularists alike, Taming the Gods powerfully argues that religion and democracy can be compatible—but only if religious and secular authorities are kept firmly apart.

Download or read book Liberty Tree written by Alfred F. Young and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2006-11-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of Liberty Tree, acclaimed historian Alfred F. Young presents a selection of his seminal writing as well as two provocative, never-before-published essays. Together, they take the reader on a journey through the American Revolution, exploring the role played by ordinary women and men (called, at the time, people out of doors) in shaping events during and after the Revolution, their impact on the Founding generation of the new American nation, and finally how this populist side of the Revolution has fared in public memory. Drawing on a wide range of sources, which include not only written documents but also material items like powder horns, and public rituals like parades and tarring and featherings, Young places ordinary Americans at the center of the Revolution. For example, in one essay he views the Constitution of 1787 as the result of an intentional accommodation by elites with non-elites, while another piece explores the process of ongoing negotiations would-be rulers conducted with the middling sort; women, enslaved African Americans, and Native Americans. Moreover, questions of history and modern memory are engaged by a compelling examination of icons of the Revolution, such as the pamphleteer Thomas Paine and Boston's Freedom Trail. For over forty years, history lovers, students, and scholars alike have been able to hear the voices and see the actions of ordinary people during the Revolutionary Era, thanks to Young's path-breaking work, which seamlessly blends sophisticated analysis with compelling and accessible prose. From his award-winning work on mechanics, or artisans, in the seaboard cities of the Northeast to the all but forgotten liberty tree, a major popular icon of the Revolution explored in depth for the first time, Young continues to astound readers as he forges new directions in the history of the American Revolution.

Download or read book Freedom written by Annelien De Dijn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the PROSE Award An NRC Handelsblad Best Book of the Year “Ambitious and impressive...At a time when the very survival of both freedom and democracy seems uncertain, books like this are more important than ever.” —The Nation “Helps explain how partisans on both the right and the left can claim to be protectors of liberty, yet hold radically different understandings of its meaning...This deeply informed history of an idea has the potential to combat political polarization.” —Publishers Weekly “Ambitious and bold, this book will have an enormous impact on how we think about the place of freedom in the Western tradition.” —Samuel Moyn, author of Not Enough “Brings remarkable clarity to a big and messy subject...New insights and hard-hitting conclusions about the resistance to democracy make this essential reading for anyone interested in the roots of our current dilemmas.” —Lynn Hunt, author of History: Why It Matters For centuries people in the West identified freedom with the ability to exercise control over the way in which they were governed. The equation of liberty with restraints on state power—what most people today associate with freedom—was a deliberate and dramatic rupture with long-established ways of thinking. So what triggered this fateful reversal? In a masterful and surprising reappraisal of more than two thousand years of Western thinking about freedom, Annelien de Dijn argues that this was not the natural outcome of such secular trends as the growth of religious tolerance or the creation of market societies. Rather, it was propelled by an antidemocratic backlash following the French and American Revolutions. The notion that freedom is best preserved by shrinking the sphere of government was not invented by the revolutionaries who created our modern democracies—it was first conceived by their critics and opponents. De Dijn shows that far from following in the path of early American patriots, today’s critics of “big government” owe more to the counterrevolutionaries who tried to undo their work.
