Book excerpt: A newly translated volume of the centuries-old spiritual epic of King Gesar. For centuries, the epic tale of Gesar of Ling has been told across Asia. This epic is a living oral tradition, performed widely by singers and bards and beloved especially in Tibet. Considered the longest single piece of literature in the world canon, the epic of Gesar chronicles the legend of King Gesar of Ling, a heroic figure known for his fearless leadership. The epic encompasses some 120 volumes and nearly 20 million words, and there are numerous versions across cultures. This book is the first English translation of the fourth volume of this sweeping literary work, with stories from after Gesar's coronation to the throne of Ling. This volume focuses on battles won and strategies applied, as the warrior-king Gesar fended off demons and liberated his foes. Though largely a violent account focused on his superhuman prowess in battle, this volume is rich with ethical proverbs that inform Tibetan culture to this day. A significant work of legend, the epic of Gesar is also a vital part of Tibetan Buddhism, as Gesar is said to have been chosen by celestial beings to restore order and destroy anti-Buddhist forces. The epic of Gesar is the cultural touchstone of Tibet, analogous to the Iliad or the Odyssey. While Book One covers Gesar's birth, youth, and rise to power, this volume recounts the martial victories and magical feats that made him a legendary figure to so many.

Book excerpt: He only wanted a duchess for a day--but she's determined to make it a marriage for life When his father and older brother suddenly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear. To thwart the plans of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries a wallflower. After all, she's meek and mild; it should be easy to sequester her in the country and get on with his life--as a secret agent for the Crown. But his bride has other ideas. She's determined to take her place not only as his duchess but as his wife. As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society--the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd remain in the background as he ordered. Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

Book excerpt: Herbert Dyce Murphy inspired Patrick White’s 'The Twyborn Affair'; he appears as a woman in one of E. Phillips Fox’s best-known paintings; he prevented Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition from imploding.' Lady Spy, Gentleman Explorer' tells the story of one man’s fascinating double life – a gentleman adventurer who also dressed in drag to spy for British Military Intelligence in pre-World War I Europe. In 1911 Murphy sailed to the Antarctic with the Mawson expedition for a gruelling exploration of the frozen continent, a trip of terrible hardship which claimed lives – probably unnecessarily – as this controversial view of Mawson demonstrates.Brilliantly researched and beautifully written, Heather Rossiter’s 'Lady Spy, Gentleman Explorer' gives Murphy’s unforgettable story its due at last.“The life of this Australian adventurer overseas, as teenage seaman, lady spy in Europe before World War I, Arctic explorer, reads like fiction and inspired fiction, Patrick White’s The Twyborn Affair. Heather Rossiter’s quick-footed narrative does justice at last to the rich and puzzling facts.” David Malouf“Using diaries held by the Mitchell Library [Rossiter] weaves an account of bravery, hardship and determination in the face of almost unimaginable odds… For someone who has never been to Antarctica or read first-hand accounts of any expeditions it is a revelation.”Frank Campbell, 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

Book excerpt: Riding the wave of the very popular Regency genre, The Gentleman Spy Mysteries series mixes dark mystery with happily ever after romances to capture the hearts of readers. Includes all four books in the darkly romantic Gentleman Spy Mysteries! If you love Regency era mysteries and romance, you'll love the Gentleman Spy Mysteries. Book One, The Innkeeper's Daughter follows Agent-to-the-Crown Sir Henry March and his beautiful and feisty common-born mistress, Eliza Broad, who proves herself to be a worthy partner in the fight against enemy agents running a dark sadistic world of sex trafficking that has eluded Sir Henry for years. Book Two, The Gentleman's Daughter, continues with the story of Sir Henry, who according the rules of society, must marry a lady above reproach to give his illegitimate daughter, Emily, entrance into society. Just when he thinks there are no women of interest, he meets Isabella who is as beautiful as she is talented. But Isabella doesn't plan to marry, and wants to forget a painful past. To keep her overbearing mother at bay, she embarks on a fake courtship with Sir Henry, which soon turns to love. All the while, the same enemy agents are still at work, and it falls to Sir Henry to save Isabella from their dark world. Book Three, The Memory of Her, follows Sir Henry's best friend, Allen Strathem, as he recuperates from the horrors of war, and the woman who nurses him to health, and Sir Henry's former mistress, Eliza Broad. As he regains his strength, and the two of them find love, they must battle together to elude and capture the men who tortured Allen during the war - only to find out that something much more dark is afoot. Finally, in Book Four, The Spy's Daughter, Sir Henry's daughter, Emily, is ready to enter society; however, her illegitimacy may overshadow her wealth, beauty, and talent. But it may be another barrier that stands in her way, the enemy forces who have always eluded her father. Max Warthon is the grandson of one of those dark and powerful agents, and he knows that getting too close to Emily will lead to peril, but he cannot resist her. Their whirlwind romance attracts everyone's attention — and raises the ire of his grandfather. With old secrets standing in their way, will Emily and Max be able to unravel the mystery of an ancient hatred and unmask the true enemy once and for all?

It’s 1915, and Dr. Anthony Brooke has been called away from his medical practice to spy for the British Crown. But now it seems his mission has been compromised. In a hotel in Kiel, Germany, a colleague’s dying words are, “There’s a spy in England . . . Frankie’s letter. Read Frankie’s letter . . .” But Anthony hasn’t a clue who Frankie might be. With his cover blown and the German army at his heels, Anthony’s search for the truth leads him to a seemingly innocent estate in the English countryside. Here, in the home of a British publishing magnate and his beautiful French wife, Anthony uncovers a web of spies, treachery, and terrorists as the war gets closer—and becomes all too personal. “[An] exciting spy thriller full of period charm.” —Kirkus Reviews “Dolores Gordon-Smith keeps her plot twisting and turning.” —Historical Novel Society

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the fate of the ideal of the English gentleman once the empire he was meant to embody declined, Praseeda Gopinath argues that the stylization of English masculinity became the central theme, focus, and conceit for many literary texts that represented the "condition of Britain" in the 1930s and the immediate postwar era. From the early writings of George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh to works by poets and novelists such as Philip Larkin, Ian Fleming, Barbara Pym, and A. S. Byatt, the author shows how Englishmen trafficking in the images of self-restraint, governance, decency, and detachment in the absence of a structuring imperial ethos became what the poet Larkin called "scarecrows of chivalry." Gopinath's study of this masculine ideal under duress reveals the ways in which issues of race, class, and sexuality constructed a gendered narrative of the nation.
