As the magic that sustains the kingdom starts weakening and a drought looms over Kosala, Ayodhya’s citizens begin to disappear mysteriously. And unknown to Bharat, the Lord of Lanka has put a cunning plan into action that will break the back of Ayodhya’s resistance. Beset by challenges, will Bharat lose Ayodhya so early in his reign? Crackling with characters overlooked and forgotten by the Ramayana, The Warlord of Ayodhya is a thrilling spinoff by bestselling fantasy author Shatrujeet Nath. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Image Trap analyses the phenomenon of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), the legendary film star-cum-politician of Tamil Nadu, as a modern-day political myth. This book offers fascinating details about the extent to which MGR was successful in creating a stereotypical cinematic persona, and what repercussions it had on Tamil Nadu. Delineating the cultural elements that were meticulously mobilised to constitute MGR’s on-screen image, it analyses the popularity he enjoyed among the poor whose interests he constantly violated. This is done by means of what Pandian termed as constructed biographies which are popular narratives that ingeniously present the cinematic as real. It brings out the interface and interplay between the media and political processes. A blend of essay writing, political rhetoric and scholarship, the book features the complete filmography of MGR and is a must for understanding the contemporary politics of the state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the challenges for efficient groundwater management, with a focus on South Asia and India, providing a balanced presentation of theory and field practice using a multidisciplinary approach. Groundwater of South Asia is increasingly confronted with overuse and deteriorating quality and therefore requires urgent attention. Management of the stressed groundwater systems is an extremely complex proposition because of the intricate hydrogeological set-up of the region. Strategies for sustainable management must involve a combination of supply-side and demand-side measures depending on the regional setting and socio-economic situations. As a consequence, the challenges of efficient groundwater management require not only a clear understanding of the aquifer configuration, but also demand for the development of a comprehensive database of the groundwater occurrences and flow systems in each hydrogeological setting. In addition, drilling and well construction methods that are appropriate to different hydrogeological formations need to be implemented as well as real-time monitoring of the status of the groundwater use. Also corrective measures for groundwater that is threatened with depletion and quality deterioration need to be installed. Finally, the legal framework of groundwater needs to be rearticulated according to the common property aspect of groundwater. These challenges should revolve around effective groundwater governance by creating an atmosphere to support and empower community-based systems of decision-making and revisit the existing legal framework and groundwater management institutions by fostering community initiatives. This book is relevant for academics, professionals, administrators, policy makers, and economists concerned with various aspects of groundwater science and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a path across an array of human phenomenology, Respiring Ruin is a collection of poems that examine and convey a series of reflections articulating the nature of our existence unabashedly and unapologetically. The intent is to shed some light on the derelict forms of relationships between people and nature. It questions the quality of life we lead with brief appreciation for the simple joys and little pleasures life holds. The core idea is embodied within the book’s title, which is the ambitious communication of an almost cynical, yet awe-inspiring notion that we as humans are biological architectures that are a compromise between fantasy and decadence. Refraining from the usual title-poem caricature, Respiring Ruin is dialogue poetry, where two people explore not just their own but each other’s thoughts, addressing the masculine and feminine perspectives. Hence, it follows a ‘He-She narrative,’ the “He” written by Pragadish Kirubakaran and “She” by Nikitha Sathi. Interspersed within the book are illustrations which accompany every piece, ensuring you, the reader, a literary and visual treat.

The book showcases extraordinary images of landscapes and wildlife from across India, many of which are now critically endangered. It also features writing examining one of literature's most rewarding and enduring themes: Our relationship with Nature. It speaks of breathtaking vistas and mythical creatures. It is a testament to that which endures, to the wonder of life. The tigers that appear in the bushes when you least expect them, the birdsong of the peacock, the call of the Cheetal (spotted deer), the gush of wind through the trees, the enigmatic turtles in the blue waters of the Andamans, the serrated mountains of Ladakh--our planet contains more mystery, love, and beauty than the human heart can possibly hold. Life is after all, a journey to where the wild things are.

But was the Halahala truly destroyed? A small portion still remains – a weapon powerful enough to guarantee victory to whoever possesses it. And both asuras and devas, locked in battle for supremacy, will stop at nothing to claim it. As the forces of Devaloka and Patala, led by Indra and Shukracharya, plot to possess the Halahala, Shiva turns to mankind to guard it from their murderous clutches. It is now up to Samrat Vikramaditya and his Council of Nine to quell the supernatural hordes – and prevent the universe from tumbling into chaos! Book excerpt: The town of Badami, the nearby villages of Aihole and Pattadakal, and the pilgrimage site of Mahakuta, in the Malprabha valley of central Karnataka, are celebrated for their magnificent rock-cut shrines and structural temples. These Hindu and Jain monuments are associated with the Early Chalukyas who reigned over this part of the Deccan during the 6th-8th centuries. Together with a profusion of magnificent sculptures, mostly found in situ, these shrines and temples may be considered among the earliest, best preserved vestiges of temple art in India. This guidebook, the first ever for the Badami region, is authored by a scholar whose PhD was on Early Chalukya architecture. The text is illustrated with regional and town maps, building plans, and more than 130 splendid color photographs.

Book excerpt: Overtourism explores a growing phenomenon in tourism that is currently creating tensions in both urban and rural tourist destinations worldwide. This volume proposes a framework for a series of possible solutions and management strategies for dealing with overtourism and the various negative impacts that large quantities of tourists can impose. Questioning the causes of this phenomenon – such as increased prosperity and mobility, technological development, issues of security and stigma for certain parts of the world, and so on – this book supposes that better visitor management strategies and distribution of tourists can offset the negative impacts of overtourism. Individual chapters focus on a range of destinations including Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik, as well as UNESCO cultural and natural heritage sites, where local political actors and public authorities are not always able to deal with the situation effectively. Integrating research and practice, this book will be of great interest to upper-level students, researchers and academics in tourism, development studies, cultural studies and sustainability, as well as professionals in the field of tourism management.
