This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America by : Cristian G. Parker
Download or read book Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America written by Cristian G. Parker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark work constitutes a complete historical, sociological, and political view of religion as a cultural expression in Latin America. Parker shows how, beginning with the arrival of the conquistadors, religion has played a transcendent role in shaping the national cultures of the region, particularly its popular cultures, and continues to do so. Parker argues that while capitalistic modernization and urbanization do lead to secularization, this process is not linear or progressive. Secularization in Latin America does not destroy its religious fabric but rather transforms it, accentuating its pluralistic character. Christianity, and particularly Roman Catholicism, has influenced Latin American identity and culture most profoundly. But it has by no means been the sole influence, nor has Christianity itself remained unchanged in the process. As a product of history and capitalistic modernization, the trait of religion that emerges most clearly is that of cultural and religious pluralism.

Book excerpt: This textbook delves into the study of the different historical stages of Christianity in Latin America, establishing connections with universal history. It adopts a critical and decolonial approach to examine the presence of this religion in the continent, covering both its Catholic side -including Roman Catholicism- and the Protestant-Evangelical, Anglican-Episcopalian and Orthodox branches at key moments of its development. To this end, it begins by exploring the original cultures of the Americas prior to 1492 and moves forward to the present. This book offers an enriching analysis that invites reflection on the impact and transformation of Christianity in Latin America, contextualizing its influence in the historical development of the region.

Book Synopsis Rascally Signs in Sacred Places by : David E. Whisnant
Download or read book Rascally Signs in Sacred Places written by David E. Whisnant and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Whisnant provides a comprehensive analysis of the dynamic relationship between culture, power, and policy in Nicaragua over the last 450 years. Spanning a broad spectrum of popular and traditional expressive forms--including literature, music, film, and broadcast media--the book explores the evolution of Nicaraguan culture, its manipulation for political purposes, and the opposition to cultural policy by a variety of marginalized social and regional groups. Within the historical narrative of cultural change over time, Whisnant skillfully discusses important case studies of Nicaraguan cultural politics: the consequences of the unauthorized removal of archaeological treasures from the country in the nineteenth century; the perennial attempts by political factions to capitalize on the reputation of two venerated cultural figures, poet Ruben Dario and rebel General Augusto C. Sandino; and the ongoing struggle by Nicaraguan women for liberation from traditional gender relations. Originally published in 1995.
