Book excerpt: Imagine a dialogue between Jesus and someone we read about in scripture, someone who had an extraordinary encounter with the Lord. The daughter of Jairus, a synagogue official, had such an encounter. What might she have thought upon meeting him? What might she have learned in years following, from being in his presence? Her words to Jesus might sound like your own as she shares with us her struggles, her prayers, and her questions to the Lord. His words to her might sound like the answers you too need to hear.

Book excerpt: Biblical Limits is a new series which brings to the traditional field of Biblical Studies literary criticism, anthropology and gender-based approaches, thus reaching new ways of understanding Biblical texts. Jesus Framed is a collection of essays on reading the gospel of Mark. It uses literary theory, most notably the writings of Roland Barthes, to examine some of the difficulties in the text of Mark. A series of close readings of the gospel of Mark is compared to similar texts, both biblical and otherwise. Drawing on Mark's famous phrase that "to those who are outside all comes through parables" (Mark 4:11-12), Jesus Framed explores the boundaries between insiders and outsiders, those who can and those who cannot find a meaning in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces Jesus' attitude to impurity within the historical context at the end of the Second Temple period, when practices of ritual purity came to play an increasing role in Jewish society and an expansionist trend gained in influence and support. The traditional focus on sayings material and criteria of authenticity in historical Jesus-research is modified, narrative traditions with implicit purity issues are appealed to, and extra-canonical traditions are included. The main areas examined are the most important "fathers" of impurity: "leprosy" (skin diseases), genital discharges, and corpse-contamination. Jesus is found to have acted in ways that could have been understood by some of his contemporaries as indifference to these types of impurity. His behaviour is shown on several points to clash with current purity halakhah and dominant expansionist ideals. In an attempt to interpret his actions within the Jewish context and culture of the Second Temple period, three explanatory models are provided. Jesus' attitude can be seen as part of a moral trajectory in Judaism. It can be understood as a response to a regional, Galilean dilemma. It can be viewed in a power perspective as an expression of Jesus' eschatological struggle against demonic evil. The result is that Jesus may be understood as operating within the purity paradigm of his time, yet seemingly indifferent in the eyes of some, pushing it to the breaking point. Such a reconstruction makes subsequent developments intelligible, in which various Christian currents drew conflicting conclusions. Those looking to Jesus' behaviour for some sort of guidance today may perhaps find contemporary analogies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cold blustery Sunday morning in January 2017, it was the first time my family and I stepped into the foyer of the Redeemer International Church of The Hague. We were met by a vivacious colorful woman who welcomed us and introduced herself by saying, “Good morning! My name is Rhonda, just like the song “Help Me Rhonda,” now you’ll never forget!” And she was right, how could we forget? We were from America and very familiar with this popular Beach Boys’ song. But besides that, we will never forget this warm welcome and who could guess that this woman would become one of my closest sisters in the Lord – a covenant sister. Rhonda Dikoko is a whirlwind, a dynamo, a beautiful, passionate and committed woman of God. I know of her toil in the Lord, how she gives 100% in everything she does. I’ve personally experienced this love and compassion at time when I was sick at home for a few weeks. Even though she was working full time, she came almost every day; to check on me, to bring me homemade soup and to give her encouragement. She doesn’t know it, but she carried me those weeks and I will never forget the blessing she was to me and my family. As you read this devotional book, you will see a glimpse of the wonderful woman Rhonda is, but I know with all her heart – she would want you to not see her, but Jesus Christ in her, daily working in her to bring the full glory unto God. ---- Mary Thomas, member of Redeemer International Church of The Hague.

Book excerpt: There are 100s of versions of the Bible. This study compares only 50 versions of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Why are there so many versions? 1) There are 1,000s of copies of Bible manuscripts, some of which have unauthorized changes made by the copyists. The translators can not agree on which copies to use. 2) The translators use different kinds of English, such as: Amplified. Contemporary. Expanded. Inspirational. Literal. Majestic, Plowboy & Unvarnished English. And none of these versions agree with other similar versions: some are Conservative, others Liberal or Radical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the brilliant Fr. Spitzer probes in detail the major question that if an intelligent Creator God – manifest in logical proofs, scientific evidence, and near death experiences - who is the source of our desire for the sacred, and the transcendental desires for truth, love, goodness, and beauty, would want to reveal himself to us personally and ultimately. He then shows this is reasonable not only in light of our interior experience of a transcendent Reality, but also that a completely intelligent Reality is completely positive--implying its possession of a completely positive virtue – namely love, defined as agape. This leads to the question whether God might be unconditionally loving, and if he is, whether he would want to make a personal appearance to us in a perfect act of empathy – face to face. After examining the rational evidence for this, he reviews all world religions to see if there is one that reveals such a God – an unconditionally loving God who would want to be with us in perfect empathy. This leads us to the extraordinary claim of Jesus Christ who taught that God is "Abba", the unconditionally loving Father. Jesus' claims go further, saying that He is also unconditional love, and that his mission is to give us that love through an act of complete self-sacrifice. He also claims to be the exclusive Son of the Father, sent by God to save the world, and the one who possesses divine power and authority. The rest of the book does an in-depth examination of the evidence for Jesus' unconditional love of sinners, his teachings, his miracles, and his rising from the dead. As well as the evidence for Jesus' gift of the Holy Spirit that enabled his disciples to perform miracles in his name, and evidence for the presence of the Holy Spirit today. If this strong evidence convinces us to believe that Jesus is our ultimate meaning and destiny, and desire His saving presence in our lives, that evidence should galvanize the Holy Spirit within us to show that Jesus is Lord and Savior, the way, the truth, and the life. And our faith in him will transform everything we think about our nature, dignity, and destiny– and how we live, endure suffering, contend with evil, and treat our neighbor.
