Originally published in 1880, this is a translation of The Gulistan or Rose-Garden of Shekh Muslihu'D-Din Sadi Shiraz. The Gulistan of Sadi has attained a popularity in the East which, perhaps, has never been reached by any European work in this Western world. Written in the first half of the thirteen century, in Sadi's code of morals, mercy and charity are not restricted to true believers.

Book excerpt: Shaykh Mushrifuddin Sa'di of Shiraz finished his collection of moral tales in 1258 AD, and over the centuries it has been one of the most widely read and influential books in the Persian sphere. The first English translation was during the 18th century; Wheeler M. Thackston (Persian, Harvard U.) presents a new edition and new translation on facing pages. Written by Sa'd of Shiraz (c. 1200-c.1290), the Gulistan is probably the best-known nonreligious text in all of Persian literature. A baggy collection of anecdotes, short didactic tales, maxims, and bits of wise advice, it is divided into eight broad chapters of mixed prose and verse that view life through an Islamo-Persian lens. Sa'd's fame is due less to the content, which is conventional wisdom, than to his brilliant style, which combines great concision with puns, rhymed prose, and wordplay exploiting the full range of Persian rhetoric in a manner that Persians call something like "impossible simplicity," irreproducible in English.

Download or read book Sa'di in Love written by Homa Katouzian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In the breath that I die, for you I'll be longing/ Wishing to turn into the dust of your belonging' - Sa'di, Expressions of Love. With poetry which speaks across the ages, Sa'di (1210-1281) is a vital classical poet and a towering figure of the medieval Persian canon. Comparable in skill and stature to other Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi and Omar Khayyam, Sa'di's verses--best known through his 'Bustan' and 'Golestan' address universal themes of passion, love and the human condition in works which are both psychologically perceptive and beautifully crafted. His mystical writings, contemporaneous with Rumi, reveal a degree of depth, wisdom and insight which have placed Sa'di in the pantheon of world literature. In this essential new translation of Sa'di's work, leading expert on Iranian studies Homa Katouzian seeks to bring the poet's lyrics to a new readership. The book provides the Persian text and Katouzian's English translation side-by-side, creating an indispensible tool for students and enthusiasts of Iranian history, literature and culture.

Book excerpt: One of greatest Persian writers of both classical prose and poetry, Sa‘di was revered in his time as a man of great wisdom and passion. Sometimes said to have lived over one hundred years, the body of his work was written in the thirteenth century. Filled with extracts of the poet’s melodious and insightful writing, and critical analysis thereof, this revealing biography examines why he was so idolised until the 1950s, and why since then he has fallen into relative obscurity. Focussing on the themes of both physical and spiritual love stitched through Sa‘di’s writing, as well as the impact of his many years travelling, Katouzian sheds a unique insight on who he calls 'the poet of life, love and compassion'.

Book Synopsis Drunk on the Wine of the Beloved by : Hafiz
Download or read book Drunk on the Wine of the Beloved written by Hafiz and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2001-08-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persian Sufi poet Hafiz (1326–1390) is a towering figure in Islamic literature—and in spiritual attainment as well. Known for his profound mystical wisdom combined with a sublime sensuousness, Hafiz was the supreme master of a poetic form known as the ghazal (pronounced "guzzle"), an ode or song consisting of rhymed couplets celebrating divine love. In this selection of his poems, wine and the intoxication it brings are the image that expresses this love in all its joyful abandon, painful longing, bewilderment, and surrender. Through ninety-five free-verse renditions, we gain entry into the mystical world of Hafiz's Winehouse, with its happy minstrels, its bewitching Winebringer, and its companions in drunken longing whose hearts cry out, "More wine!" Thomas Rain Crowe brings a new dimension to our growing appreciation of Hafiz and his wise drunkard's advice to the seekers of God: In this world of illusion, take nothing other than this cup of wine; In this playhouse, don't play any games but love.
