Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story was added by Lord Brutus to his chronicles because it had an impact on his early life. Earth, just ten years after the battle of the Sorcerers. Only Bundwold, Megalin and Krossos had survived the war and these three were the sole surviving members of the Council of Magicians, and all were white sorcerers, much to the dismay of Lord Baal. Baal set a trap using minions that worshipped him called THE RISING MOON CULT. He knew that Bundwold missed his pet that he called The Yetson. It was a cross between a rat and a bird with an ugly beak full of sharp teeth and it had leathery skin rather than feathers. As Bundwold bent to collect his pet, his clutching fingers touched its skin and a spell was tripped. The Yetson suddenly grew to eight feet tall, killing Bundwold and only allowing him time to transfer his soul to the nether regions of Earth and the Underworld. A plot is hatched to use The Yetson to snare one of the last two Sorcerers to his cause.

Book excerpt: Lord Brutus, the new King of Caderia, was soon to learn that being king like his father before him carried a greater burden than he ever thought possible. With the invasion of his own realm by the Master of Chaos (Krossos) almost nigh, he is forced to seek out and free the white wizard Megalin from a trap set by the black wizard Krossos. Only with Megalin's help can the invasion be stopped and defeated. Megalin sends Lord Brutus help from an unlikely source, the Channi, warriors created by magic that started life as six-inch lizards from the swamps around the fabled City of Magicians. The leader of these creatures is Grogan, who brings a charm that had been worn by Brutus's late father; this would protect him from dark spells and creatures from the Underworld. So begins his quest to free Megalin and take on the role of protector of Earth and humanity; and the start of his fabled chronicles. A new hero is born?

Book excerpt: The original Welsh stories of these beloved characters and their world for the first time in English The stories in Tales of Merlin, Arthur, and the Magic Arts deal with well-known figures from medieval Britain who will be familiar to many readers—though not from the versions presented here. These freshly translated tales emerge from the remarkable and enormous sixteenth-century Chronicle of the Six Ages of the World by the Welshman Elis Gruffydd. Tales of Merlin, Arthur, and the Magic Arts revives the original legends of these Welsh heroes alongside stories of the continued survival of the magical arts, from antiquity to the Renaissance, and the broader cultural world of the Welsh. These stories provide a vivid and faithful rendering of Merlin, Arthur, and the many original folktales left out of the widespread accounts of their exploits.

Book excerpt: Imagining the Pagan Past explores stories of Britain's pagan history. These tales have been characterised by gods and fairies, folklore and magic. They have had an uncomfortable relationship with the scholarly world; often being seen as historically dubious, self-indulgent romance and, worse, encouraging tribal and nationalistic feelings or challenging church and state. This book shows how important these stories are to the history of British culture, taking the reader on a lively tour from prehistory to the present. From the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century, Marion Gibson explores the ways in which British pagan gods and goddesses have been represented in poetry, novels, plays, chronicles, scientific and scholarly writing. From Geoffrey of Monmouth to Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare to Seamus Heaney and H.G. Wells to Naomi Mitchison it explores Romano-British, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon deities and fictions. The result is a comprehensive picture of the ways in which writers have peopled the British pagan pantheons throughout history. Imagining the Pagan Past will be essential reading for all those interested in the history of paganism.

Book excerpt: There are several reasons why the chronicle is particularly suited as the topic of a yearbook. In the first place there is its ubiquity: all over Europe and throughout the Middle Ages chronicles were written, both in Latin and in the vernacular, and not only in Europe but also in the countries neighbouring on it, like those of the Arabic world. Secondly, all chronicles raise such questions as by whom, for whom, or for what purpose were they written, how do they reconstruct the past, what determined the choice of verse or prose, or what kind of literary influences are discernable in them. Finally, many chronicles have been beautifully illuminated, and the relation between text and image leads to a wholly different set of questions. The yearbook The Medieval Chronicle aims to provide a representative survey of the on-going research in the field of chronicle studies, illustrated by examples from specific chronicles from a wide variety of countries, periods and cultural backgrounds. The Medieval Chronicle is published in cooperation with the "Medieval Chronicle Society".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of medieval literature has experienced a revolution in the last two decades, which has reinvigorated many parts of the discipline and changed the shape of the subject in relation to the scholarship of the previous generation. 'New' texts (laws and penitentials, women's writing, drama records), innovative fields and objects of study (the history of the book, the study of space and the body, medieval masculinities), and original ways of studying them (the Sociology of the Text, performance studies) have emerged. This has brought fresh vigour and impetus to medieval studies, and impacted significantly on cognate periods and areas. The Oxford Handbook of Medieval Literature in English brings together the insights of these new fields and approaches with those of more familiar texts and methods of study, to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of medieval literature today. It also returns to first principles in posing fundamental questions about the nature, scope, and significance of the discipline, and the directions that it might take in the next decade. The Handbook contains 44 newly commissioned essays from both world-leading scholars and exciting new scholarly voices. Topics covered range from the canonical genres of Saints' lives, sermons, romance, lyric poetry, and heroic poetry; major themes including monstrosity and marginality, patronage and literary politics, manuscript studies and vernacularity are investigated; and there are close readings of key texts, such as Beowulf, Wulf and Eadwacer, and Ancrene Wisse and key authors from Ælfric to Geoffrey Chaucer, Langland, and the Gawain Poet.
