Book excerpt: One day a long time ago, long before even your Grandmother was a little girl, a spring of water emerged through the surface of the ground....." Tale of the outback Waterhole is an enlightening story about the balance of nature in Australia. The story begins in prehistoric times and continues to the present day. This is a beautifully illustrated, educational book which carries an environmental message about the sensitivity of nature in Australia. The story tells how a waterhole is created and flourishes in the Australian outback. Over many years the aboriginals live in harmony with the land and the waterhole. In latter years, farming is introduced to the area, which eventually harms the waterhole.. The waterhole is revived to its former glory through the cooperation of the farmer, environmentalists and the local aboriginals. This book concludes with a section of teaching notes and activities.

Book excerpt: The life of the legendary pioneer of outback travel - the man who opened up Australia to adventure travel. A modern - day explorer who took everyday Australians along for the ride.Bill King is the pioneer who put the Australian outback on the map for both local and international tourists. Through an enterprise founded on hope and grit - now operating as AAT Kings - he opened up a completely new branch of Australian tourism. Thousands of Australians have experienced the adventure of a lifetime in Bill's capable hands, often walking in the footsteps of explorers such as Burke and Wills, Leichhardt, Sturt and Stuart.Eccentric drivers, mad passengers and sticky situations abound against the backdrop of the glorious Australian outback. Bill and his tour groups sometimes got lost, bogged or stranded - sometimes even scared out of their wits - but there was always a fierce determination to bring the show back home. Bill never lost a passenger or brought one to harm, though by heck they did sometimes try his monumental patience.

Book excerpt: There was something interesting around every corner, be it brumbies and wild donkeys disappearing through the bush, or a little waterhole where the snakes and kangaroos came to drink. Toni's childhood isn't like other kids'. She is only five years old when her mum packs a small suitcase and takes the family over 300 kilometres on a scratchy dirt track to live at Killarney, a remote cattle station in the Northern Territory. Toni grows up among the cattle and horses, with the wild Territory climate and even wilder native animals around her. She has adventures with Old Dora and Daisy, the Aboriginal women who help raise her and her brothers and sisters. They teach her about bush tucker and tell her stories of debil debils. My Outback Childhood is the story of Toni's unconventional upbringing on Killarney - stalking goannas, helping in the cattle yards, riding horses and sleeping under the stars. Young readers will be captivated by this true story of a childhood filled with Outback adventures. Fascinating for city kids and country children alike, this is a unique story that educates as well as entertains.

Book excerpt: Jeannie Gunn's 'The Little Black Princess: A True Tale of Life in the Never-Never Land' is a captivating narrative that delves into the relationship between a European woman and an Indigenous Australian girl in the remote Australian outback. Gunn's literary style is characterized by vivid descriptions of the harsh yet beautiful landscape, as well as sensitive portrayals of the cultural clashes and misunderstandings that occur in this setting. The book is a significant contribution to Australian literature, offering readers a glimpse into the complexities of race relations and colonialism during the early 20th century. Jeannie Gunn, also known as 'Mrs. Aeneas Gunn,' was a pioneering author who drew inspiration from her own experiences living in the Australian outback. Her firsthand knowledge of the challenges and triumphs of life in the bush shines through in this novel, making it a powerful and authentic portrayal of a bygone era. I highly recommend 'The Little Black Princess' to readers interested in Australian literature, colonial history, and cross-cultural relationships. Gunn's thoughtful exploration of identity, belonging, and empathy makes this book a compelling and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in issues of diversity and inclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical account of Colonel Warburton's remarkable journey across the Western Interior of Australia. In 1872, Warburton left South Australia as the supervisor of an expedition that also included his son Richard and J. Lewis to cross from Alice Springs to Roebourne on Australia's West Coast. It was funded and supplied with seventeen camels and six months' supplies by (Sir) Walter Hughes and (Sir) Thomas Elder, to connect the province with Western Australia. They endured long periods of extreme heat with little water after leaving Alice Springs in April 1873 and survived only by slaughtering the camels for their meals. Warburton was strapped to a camel when they arrived at the Oakover River. They were brought to Charles Harper's de Grey station in northern Western Australia on January 11, 1874. They had beaten the Great Sandy Desert to be the first to traverse the region.

Book excerpt: On their second trip to Australia, Ruth and Harold met a couple during a Great Barrier Reef cruise. They and their children eventually became great friends. Lynette and Rob had lived in Washington, DC and had traveled all over the world, but they had never been to the Outback. So when the opportunity to explore it under the sponsorship of the highly respected National Trust appeared, they seized the chance and invited the Harbaughs along. The almost three week journey involved one widely traveled American couple, 14 reserved Aussies, and a driver named Dave. Together they explored deserted telegraph stations, hidden water holes, and compelling Outback attractions rarely seen by outsiders. The well educated Australians aboard were expecting a university scholar to conduct this 8,000 mile circle that included 5 of the 7 Australian States and 1 Territory, but they ended up with Dave, a mate whose favorites subjects were beer, fishing, and lame, politically incorrect jokes.

This is a plain bush yarn, relating in a humorous vein the experiences and adventures of a young man, who, finding himself stranded in Brisbane, where he knew no one, shouldered his swag and struck out into the bush to look for a job. His track from Breakfast Creek to beyond the Maranoa River, may be traced on the map, for he deals only with real places—and real people—and what he goes through is what the majority of swag men go through. Always an optimist, he sees the humor of the situations, and his narrative is embellished with details of bushcraft, and with the yarns and the fun of campfire and track.
