Book Synopsis Diaries of an English Rogue Abroad by : Kevin Courtney
Download or read book Diaries of an English Rogue Abroad written by Kevin Courtney and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my brother Kevin Courtney who died tragically aged 30 in 1998 during his time in Hong Kong. Kevin was a born traveller and upon his many travels he always kept a diary along with hundreds of photos and postcards sent home to his parents. Kevin, a huge risk taker and a go getter, always liked to travel to places off the beaten track and go explore places in which some people could only dream about. Were you a back packer in the nineties? Maybe you met him. This book includes his diaries of his first world trip from India to Asia, Australia (where he had a warrant out for his arrest and was also arrested on another matter), New Zealand and Northern America travelling for 450 days inclusive, his travels to Africa (which led to imprisonment/jailed). Central and Southern America and then the most dangerous of all, the trek through the Darien Gap Jungle. These diaries reflect his far from boring personality with his witty and very amusing tales. It shows his great sense for adventure, the risks he was willing to take, the dangerous gambles, the awkward situations he faced, he was just so fearless. This book will make you smile and shock you at the same time. This is his story of his travels in his own words.
Book Synopsis The Romance of K'tut Tantri and Indonesia by : Timothy Lindsey
Download or read book The Romance of K'tut Tantri and Indonesia written by Timothy Lindsey and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historiographic study of K'tut Tantri - alias Vannen Walker, the journalist from the Isle of Man; Muriel Pearson, the unhappy wife; and Surabaya Sue, the notorious revolutionary - compares her romantic and colorful autobiography, Revolt in Paradise, with other versions of her past, including those of her fellow Bali colonists and her revolutionary comrades, as well as her foes, the Dutch, and various intelligence organizations. These alternatives accounts of her past question the image of K'tut Tantri as hero, portraying her instead as dishonest, unstable, egotistical, and immoral. Such criticisms have overshadowed proper recognition of her role in the development of modern Indonesia, both as a bohemian hotelier in between-wars Bali and later as propaganda broadcaster and adviser to Indonesian revolutionary leaders including Soekarno, Sutomo, and Syarifuddin. Focusing on the nature of biography and autobiography, this book analyses K'tut Tantri's self-defeating battle to use history - in text and film script - to define her identity and reappropriate her past. An examination of the use of ideas of "truth" and "fiction" in understanding the past leads to broader consideration of the nature of history and its uses. Finally, an attempt is made to reconcile the deconstruction of K'tut Tantri's autobiography with both an acceptance of the validity of "alternative" historical genres and an acceptance of the problems inherent in writing a history of a living person. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Timothy Lindsey is Professor of Law, Director of the Asian Law Centre, Director of the Centre for Islamic Law and Society and Federation Fellow in the Law School at the University of Melbourne.
Book Synopsis Sex and Sexualities in Contemporary Indonesia by : Linda Rae Bennett
Download or read book Sex and Sexualities in Contemporary Indonesia written by Linda Rae Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Ruth Benedict Prize for Outstanding Edited Volume Sex, sexuality and sexual relationships are hotly debated in Indonesia, triggering complex and often passionate responses. This innovative volume explores these issues in a variety of ways. It highlights historical and newer forms of sexual diversity, as well as the social responses they provoke. It critiques differing representations of sexuality, pointing to the multiplicity of discourses within which sexuality and ‘the sexual’ are understood in modern-day Indonesia. Placing sexuality centre-stage and locating it within the specific historical context of the Reformasi era, this landmark volume explores understandings and practices across a wide variety of sites, focusing in on a diverse group of Indonesian actors, and the contested meanings that sexuality carries. Beginning with a substantive introduction and concluding with a scholarly reflection on key issues, the volume is framed around the four themes of sexual politics, health, diversity and representations. It seeks both to present new empirical findings as well as to add to existing theoretical analysis. This work fills an important gap in our understanding of the evolution and contemporary dynamics of Indonesian sexualities. It will be of interest to scholars and academics from disciplines including gender and sexuality studies, global health, sexual and reproductive health, anthropology, sociology and Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Balinese Discourses on Music and Modernization by : Brita Renee Heimarck
Download or read book Balinese Discourses on Music and Modernization written by Brita Renee Heimarck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Western scholars have discussed the technical aspects of Balinese music or the traditional contexts for performance, little has been written in Western languages about Balinese discourses on their music. This dissertation seeks to understand the experience of music in Bali according to Balinese voices through an analysis of oral and written dialogues on music, mainly by musicians and dalangs (shadow play puppeteers) from the village of Sukawati, scholars, teachers, administrators and students from the Indonesian College of the Arts (STSI) in the City of Denpasar. The study examines the influence of modernization on the traditional arts and their role in society. A concentration on Balinese discourses enables individual performers and scholars to represent themselves to a greater extent than previously seen in ethnomusicological scholarship, making this study more of a critical discussion among equals than a Western interpretation of 'others'. This approach permits a rare view into contemporary Balinese conceptions and practices of music.

Book Synopsis Inequality, Crisis and Social Change in Indonesia by : Thomas Reuter
Download or read book Inequality, Crisis and Social Change in Indonesia written by Thomas Reuter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has experienced a quick succession of new governments and fundamental reforms since the collapse of Suharto's dictatorial regime in 1998. Established patterns in the distribution of wealth, power and knowledge have been disrupted, altered and re-asserted. The contributors to this volume have taken the unique opportunity this upheaval presents to uncover social tensions and fault lines in this society. Focusing in particular on disadvantaged sectors of Balinese society, the contributors describe how the effects of a national economic and political crisis combined with a variety of social aspirations at a grass roots level to elicit shifts in local and regional configurations of power and knowledge. This is the first time that many of them have been able to disseminate their controversial research findings without endangering their informants since the demise of the New Order regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of I’m Not Scared “elegizes adolescence fiercely and sympathetically” in a novel that’s “scary, lovely and at last a heartbreaker” (Kirkus Reviews). Lorenzo Cuni is a fourteen-year-old loner. His wealthy parents think he is away on a school skiing trip, but in fact he has stowed away in a forgotten cellar. For a week he plans to live in perfect isolation, keeping the adult world at bay. Then a visit from his estranged half-sister, Olivia, changes everything. Evoking the fierce intensity and the pulse-quickening creepiness of I’m Not Scared, Ammaniti’s bestselling first novel, Me and You is a breathtaking tale of alienation, acceptance, and wanting to be loved by “a fearsomely gifted writer” (The Independent). “Immensely engaging . . . Both tender and emotionally arresting, Ammaniti’s novel is unforgettable.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Italian author Niccolò Ammaniti does a lot in 160 pages, including surprise, humor, and frighten you—sometimes simultaneously.” —Daily Candy “Ammaniti’s prose is nimble, perceptive and economical . . . There’s a lot to love about this book—its reticent empathy, its delicate and pragmatic treatment of addiction, its remarkable use of restricted physical space.” —Full Stop “Me and You takes a short time to read but offers a memorable experience in a mutual recognition of loneliness and grief.” —Curled Up With a Good Book “Me And You, at just over one hundred pages . . . [is a] perfect book . . . Niccolò Ammaniti disgusts me for how talented he is . . . He has written a masterpiece.” —Antonio D’Orrico, Corriere della Sera

Book Synopsis Sites, Bodies and Stories by : Susan Legêne
Download or read book Sites, Bodies and Stories written by Susan Legêne and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sites, Bodies and Stories examines the intimate links between history and heritage as they have developed in postcolonial Indonesia. Sites discussed in the book include Borobudur in Central Java, a village in Flores built around megalithic formations, and ancestral houses in Alor. Bodies refers to legacies of physical anthropology, exhibition practices and Hollywood movies. The Stories are accounts of the Mambesak movement in Papua, the inclusion of wayang puppetry in UNESCO s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and subaltern history as written by the people of Blambangan in their search for national heroes. Throughout the book, citizenship entitlement figures as a leitmotif in heritage initiatives. Contemporary heritage formation in Indonesia is intrinsically linked to a canon of Indonesian art and culture developed during Dutch colonial rule, institutionalized within Indonesia's heritage infrastructure and in the Netherlands, and echoed in museums and exhibitions throughout the world. The authors in this volume acknowledge colonial legacies but argue against a colonial determinism, considering instead how contemporary heritage initiatives can lead to new interpretations of the past.
