Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland’s tropics provide numerous environments for enjoyable walking: lush rainforests, cloud-shrouded mountains, extinct volcanoes, savanna woodlands, and magnificent beaches on the coast and Great Barrier Reef islands. This book brings together more than 150 of the best walks, tracks or trails in Queensland’s tropics, located within the coastal strip between Rockhampton and Cooktown. Walks vary from short boardwalk strolls in the lowland rainforests of Daintree National Park to 4-6 day hiking and camping trips on Hinchinbrook Island. Other routes follow old gold miners’ and forestry tracks or coaching routes or feature historical sites, rivers, lagoons, geological and geographical formations or much earlier Aboriginal communication tracks where Dreamtime stories add a further dimension. Man-made environments of abandoned gold towns, heritage riverfronts, Art Deco streetscapes and Second World War installations also feature. Most routes are best completed during the ‘Dry’ season (May to October) and walked by moderately fit individuals. Most do not require specialist navigation or bushcraft skills. Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland’s Tropics highlights the best the region has to offer. Easy-to-interpret maps are included to help you navigate, and the book’s size makes it convenient to carry in the backpack.

Book excerpt: Covers Tamborine, Springbrook, Lamington, Border Ranges, Mount Barney, Main Range, Flinders Peak, the Great Walk and the full Scenic Rim Traverse.South East Queensland is endowed with an immense variety of natural bushland. No other region of Australia has such a diverse range of wilderness scenery in such close proximity, from the vast sandy regions of Fraser and Moreton Islands to the rainforests of Springbrook and Lamington, the rocky peaks of Mount Barney and the granite outcrops of Girraween. Nearly every major Australian wilderness type is represented here. The jewel in the crown as far as mountain scenery goes is the Scenic Rim and that is what this book is about. The Scenic Rim is a long chain of mountains beginning at Point Danger on the Gold Coast and then leading westwards to encompass Springbrook, Lamington, the Border Ranges, Lever's Plateau and the high rocky peaks of Mount Lindesay and Mount Barney before joining the Great Dividing Range at Wilsons Peak. Here the Rim turns northwards, following the Main Range through Cunningham's Gap and then the ridge crest further northwards to the Mistake Mountains and the Little Liverpool Range near Laidley. This guide describes bushwalks and climbs in these superb ranges as well as the nearby areas of Tamborine and Flinders Peak.

They are not necessarily the ?best? national parks but those that are usually more accessible from major cities and towns. National Parks preserve the best natural parts of Australia. They showcase the best natural landscapes, including the varying flora and fauna of Australia. That's what makes national parks great and special places to visit. The book is not a detailed or comprehensive guide to Australia's national parks. It simply provides details on public transport access and points you to other resources to assist you when visiting parks, such as maps, track notes, activities, and available facilities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents an introduction to generalized linear models, complete with real-world data sets and practice problems, making it applicable for both beginning and advanced students of applied statistics. Generalized linear models (GLMs) are powerful tools in applied statistics that extend the ideas of multiple linear regression and analysis of variance to include response variables that are not normally distributed. As such, GLMs can model a wide variety of data types including counts, proportions, and binary outcomes or positive quantities. The book is designed with the student in mind, making it suitable for self-study or a structured course. Beginning with an introduction to linear regression, the book also devotes time to advanced topics not typically included in introductory textbooks. It features chapter introductions and summaries, clear examples, and many practice problems, all carefully designed to balance theory and practice. The text also provides a working knowledge of applied statistical practice through the extensive use of R, which is integrated into the text. Other features include: • Advanced topics such as power variance functions, saddlepoint approximations, likelihood score tests, modified profile likelihood, small-dispersion asymptotics, and randomized quantile residuals • Nearly 100 data sets in the companion R package GLMsData • Examples that are cross-referenced to the companion data set, allowing readers to load the data and follow the analysis in their own R session

In this book, Professor Kitching introduces us to these fascinating miniature worlds and demonstrates how they can be used to tackle some of the major questions in community ecology. Based on thirty years' research in many parts of the world, this work presents much previously unpublished information, in addition to summarising over a hundred years of natural history observations by others. The book covers many aspects of the theory of food-web formation and maintenance presented with field-collected information on tree holes, bromeliads, pitcher plants, bamboo containers and the axils of fleshy plants. It is a unique introduction for the field naturalist and a stimulating source treatment for graduate students and professionals working in the fields of tropical and other forest ecology, as well as entomology.

This volume tests such claims through a continent-by-continent review of commercial tourism enterprises worldwide. The role of conservation tourism is increasingly important as human populations expand and climate change intensifies.
