Book excerpt: So many love stories stop at the wedding vows...when couples pledge to love each other "for better or worse, in sickness and health, til death do us part." But not this one. In 1968, Linda sat next to a handsome sailor in the Penn State cafeteria. Who could resist a handsome sailor? Not Linda, who fell head over heels in love. Against the backdrop of the tumultuous sixties, they married and had three children, and Bud became the Navy officer of his dreams. But their perfect Navy family life unraveled with Bud's frightening symptoms hearkening back to two tours in Vietnam. A sudden collapse led to a diagnosis virtually impossible for a vital young man. While Linda raised their children and followed her vows to care for her husband, two questions plagued her: How could her young and healthy husband suddenly have such a sinister cancer? And how could his beloved Navy abandon him? On a mission of love, Linda spent years unearthing what really happened to Bud, only to find that the military that discarded him had hidden the truth about his illness for decades. Tainted Seas is the sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking story of a passionate couple coping with tragedy, and the continuing journey of a woman dedicated to justice for military families shattered by the very institutions they nobly served. A loving wife on a mission of true love and truth proves that nothing can stay hidden forever--even against the power of the US government.

Book excerpt: The water-covered world of the Swell has been ravaged by the incursion of the moon shards as they make their way through the endless oceans, corrupting and transforming everything in their path. With little information and no clear direction, the remaining pockets of humanity press forward to retain what life they have on the dangerous waters. Enchanted sea glass is still the key to humanity's survival, but there are some who would seek to exploit the celestial objects for their own cause. Vila Del'Sor has joined forces with what's left of the Deep Wardens to discover the secrets of the corruption and bring the refugees of the Planks to safety. But her tasks are made all the more difficult by her growing dependance on the strange, healing substance known as Deep One's Blood and Taragin Echilar's unwanted concern for her well-being. Her choices are further complicated by the arrival of a new Warden: one who wears the face of her most hated enemy and claims to have information that could help in the quest for understanding the corruption. Deep below the surface, Narrio Olitarth is not having a good time in the underwater prison of Grim-Mire Hold. Terrible meals, unpleasant company, and life-threatening injures are only a few of the issues he faces as he carries out his new sentence. The mysterious object he stole from St. Trillian's chapel is becoming more difficult to hide with each passing hour, and the Shepherds are still out there. Escape is impossible from the legendary prison, but Narrio is determined to find a way-if he can survive that long. Meanwhile, all is not well for Bal De Bao, a young Oceanid from Boola's Reach. The Oceanid culture is one of rules and regulations meant to protect and provide for the underwater society, but Bal is tired of rules and regulations. As an offspring from Farmer Craft begetters, Bal is on the search for something greater to do with their life. But when that opportunity comes, Bal is forced to reckon with their changing worldview and consequences for their actions-consequences they did not realize were ever on the table. The corruption spreads slowly, but the full moon's rise is approaching again. Mysterious forces are at play, machinations are in motion, and no one seems to know what's going on. Welcome back to the world of the Swell. Welcome to the Tainted Seas.

Book excerpt: The English explorer and author Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-90) began his long and adventurous career in India, where he arrived in 1842 to join the 18th regiment of Bombay infantry as a young commissioned officer. In 1844 Burton's regiment was posted to Sind, the province located in present-day southeastern Pakistan, at that time only recently annexed by the British. Burton lived in Sind for a number of years and published three early books based on his experiences and observations: Scinde, or, The Unhappy Valley (two volumes, 1851), Sindh, and the Races that Inhabit the Valley of the Indus (1851), and Falconry in the Valley of the Indus (1852). The "unhappy valley" of the title of his first book refers to the valley of the Indus, which, along with the Indus River delta, largely defines the geography of Sind. More than two decades later, in 1875-76, Burton and his wife Isabel made a return visit to the province. Sind Revisited, published in London in 1877, is a result of this later journey. The book contains Burton's observations on the cities of Karachi and Hyderabad; the state of the Anglo-Indian army; relations among Muslims and Hindus and, in particular, the relentless pressure on the Hindus to convert to Islam; Sindi men and women; the Indus Valley Railway; and many other topics. Throughout, Burton uses the literary device of a fictitious traveling companion, "Mr. John Bull," to whom he addresses comments and asides. He also includes translations of poems and summaries of colorful local tales and legends, for example, that of "the seven headless prophets." In concluding remarks, Burton judges British rule to have had a positive influence, by bringing improvements in health and access to education for the Sindi people. The book is indexed but has no maps or illustrations.

Book excerpt: In 1997, Dave Ridpath walked onto the campus of Marshall University as a sports-loving athletic administrator with a career on the rise. Less than five years later, Ridpaths quest to reform one of the most corrupt athletic departments in college sports, while simultaneously standing up to the behemoth governing body that is the NCAA, had all but destroyed that career. While serving as assistant athletic director for compliance and student services at Marshall University from 1997 through 2001, Ridpath unearthed violations of several NCAA rules. These violations included overt academic fraud and impermissible, booster-devised employment for members of the Marshall University football teama team had taken the nation by storm because of its incredible success on the field. Ridpath now chronicles his experiences through this trying time in Tainted Glory: Marshall University, the NCAA, and One Mans Fight for Justice. Instead of being hailed as a conquering hero determined to clean up an outlaw program, Ridpath had the tables turned on him. He found himself out of a job when Marshall University and the NCAA determined that the path of least resistance would be to remove him rather than address the issues head-on. With this action, they hoped to avoid damaging the university, the athletic department, and the NCAA overall. This story is about more than the NCAA or Marshall University. It is about the state of the business of intercollegiate athletics told by someone on the inside who lived itthe good and the bad.
