Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tahirih Qurratu’l-‘Ayn, The Divine Female Spirit of the Age dawned upon the Earth in 1844 after thousands of years of rejection. She announced that She is the long awaited Mother Source, The Trumpet Blast, The Word of the Godhead, The Most Great Spirit that would bring the Great Reversal in which Humanity would no longer be separated from Source and the meek would inherit the Earth. The male-dominate Society rejected Her once again and called for Her Death. Prior to Her martyrdom She called out: “You can try and kill Me, but you cannot stop the emancipation of Women, nor can you kill the Spirit of the Godhead!” Thus, today Her Voice rings out again for those who have an ear! “Saffa’s book reveals a hidden Truth regarding the incarnation of the Godhead on Earth, and uncovers the constructed veils obscuring the Truth at the time that the new Spirit was expected by humankind. The author spells out the means by which knowledge of the Truth will set humanity on the promised transformational path for which it has long been waiting. She rips the veil off the premise by most religions that Messengerhood is only a bonding of a male God with a male Manifestation.” ~Ken Haley, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relations between religion and sexuality have been understudied for a long period of time within German Study of Religion. This is remarkable for two reasons: Firstly, sex and gender are somewhat frequently discussed in almost any other field of research at present; secondly, many religions still have problems to accept homosexuality as a normal and permissible way of life. This is furthermore astonishing for the Bah ' Faith as it is often mentioned as a particularly tolerant and open minded religious community. Coming from a profound historical analysis of sexual practices in 19th century Iran and their understanding from a religious point of view Hanna Langer further exemplifies the Bah ' Institutions' attitude towards homosexuality and homosexuals and their standing within the Bah ' Community. The second part of the book focuses on three major aspects related to the experiences of homosexuals: How do homosexuals themselves interpret and understand the core writings? How do they apply this understanding to their personal lives? How do they experience community life within the Bah ' Faith and the Institutions' and believers' approach towards them? Langer's comprehensive analysis of the current situation of homosexual Bah ' s was originally written as a master thesis at the Interfaculty Programme for the Study of Religion at Munich University and has been supervised by Prof Horst Junginger who also contributed a preface for the publication. Hanna A. Langer was raised in Dresden and studied Religion, Iranology and Crosscultural Communication at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

Book excerpt: Tahirih's poems are well known among Persian Baha'is, but until now there has been no suitable translation of her work that would give English-speaking readers a sense of her genius. Now Amin Banani, Professor Emeritus at UCLA in Persian history and literature; Jascha Kessler, Professor of English at UCLA; and Anthony A. Lee, historian and award-winning poet, have teamed to produce this translation of her work. The poems are brilliant in emotional impact and prophetic in their themes. They should become familiar parts of Baha'i Feasts, Holy Day celebrations, and devotional gatherings. These poems are a monument to this remarkable woman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic theology is nourished by two sources, viz., reason ('aql) and revelation (waḥyi). Firstly, by citing axiomatic and definitive principles, reason proves the existence, knowledge, power, and wisdom of God, and on the basis of these rational theological doctrines, it also establishes the necessity for revelation and the infallibility of the prophets. And through revelation and prophethood (nubuwwah), it recognizes anew all the spiritual doctrines. Once again, by utilizing logical thinking, it embarks on elucidating and reinforcing those doctrines. On this basis, although Islamic theology is also anchored in revealed (wahyānī) texts and facts, it utilizes the method of reflection and intellection in all cases, because through a certain medium, revealed facts are also traceable to rational principles and foundations. The present book deals with a set of ideological and scholastic questions based upon Islamic theology from the perspective of Shī'ah Imāmiyyah school of thought. While reason and revelation (the Qur'an and Sunnah) have been the final reference and arbiter in decisions and evaluations, the ideas and opinions of Islamic thinkers have been amply utilized. With the aim of knowing the truth and exemplifying honest scholarship, the sources and references of the views and opinions of others have been cited and sometimes, their names or titles are even mentioned in the text or footnote.

Book excerpt: "[Resurrection and Renewal] reflects extensive research by the author in the numerous Babi and Baha'i manuscript histories. From these he has succeeded in extracting much useful information and presenting it in an interesting and informative manner."--The Middle East Journal In historical writing of rare power, Abbas Amanat conveys the elation and terror that attend the birth of a new religious faith. Amanat here tells the story of the emergence of Babism, the forerunner of the Baha'i religion, in the mid-nineteenth century; its rapid spread into various sectors of Iranian society; and its fatal confrontation with the clerical establishment and the Qajar state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do so many women of faith have such a strong aversion to feminism? And why do so many feminists have an ardent mistrust of religion? These questions are at the heart of Helen LaKelly Hunt's illuminating look at the alliance between spiritual conviction and social action. Intelligent and heartfelt, Faith and Feminism offers a perceptive look at the lives of five spirited and spiritual women of history, women who combined their undying faith with feminist beliefs and who made the world a better place by doing so. • St. Teresa of Ávila, a woman whose bravery in confronting her shadows gave her the strength to connect with the world and live a life of divine action. • Lucretia Mott, a Quaker minister, who rose from her quiet upbringing to become a passionate speaker and activist working tirelessly on behalf of justice and peace. • Sojourner Truth, a Christian slave, who spoke out with unwavering courage to claim her God-given rightful place as an African American and a woman. • Emily Dickinson, an extraordinary poet, who touched the world with her ability to capture and transform the experience of suffering. • Dorothy Day, a radical journalist, who lived a life of voluntary poverty as a way of expressing her passion for the Christian faith and care for those in need. A remarkable book that focuses on the idea that spirituality and feminism are really different expressions of the same impulse to make life more whole, Faith and Feminism offers a powerful catalyst for reflecting on our sense of self -- and for living and loving according to our deepest values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph focuses on "Christian Goddess Spirituality" (CGS), the phenomenon of (mostly) women who combine Christianity and Goddess Spirituality, including Wicca/Witchcraft. Mary Ann Beavis’s study provides ethnographic data and analysis on the lived religious experience of CGS practitioners, drawing on interviews of over 100 women who self-identify as combining Christianity and Goddess spirituality. Although CGS also has implications for Goddess Spirituality and related traditions (e.g., Neopaganism, Wicca), here, CGS is considered primarily as a phenomenon within Christianity. However, the study also shows that the fusion of Christian and Goddess spiritualties has had an impact on non-Christian feminist spirituality, since Goddess-worshippers have often constructed Christianity as the diametrical opposite and enemy of the Goddess, to the point that some refuse to admit the possibility that CGS is a valid spiritual path, or that it is even possible. In addition, biblical, Jewish and Christian images of the divine such as Sophia, Shekhinah, the Virgin Mary, and even Mary Magdalene, have found their way into the "Pagan" Goddess pantheon. The main themes of the study include: overlaps and differences between Christian feminist theology and CGS; the routes to CGS for individual practitioners, and their beliefs, practices and experiences; proto-denominational classifications ("spiritual paths") within CGS; CGS thealogy (Christian discourse about the female divine); and the future of CGS in social scientific and ecclesiological context. Christian Goddess Spirituality will be of interest to scholars of religion, especially those with interests in women and religion, feminist spiritualities, feminist theology/thealogy, alternative spiritualities, New Religious Movements, and emergent Christianities.
