Allover the world, work is being done to replace as much as possible of this human effort by computer processing. At the frontier of what can already be done (mostly) automatically we find syntactic wordclass tagging, the annotation of the individual words in a text with an indication of their morpho syntactic classification. This book describes the state of the art in syntactic wordclass tagging. As an attempt to give an overall view of the field, this book is of interest to (at least) two, possibly very different, types of reader. The first type consists of those people who are using, or are planning to use, tagged material and taggers. They will want to know what the possibilities and impossibilities of tagging are, but are not necessarily interested in the internal working of automatic taggers. This, on the other hand, is the main interest of our second type of reader, the builders of automatic taggers and other natural language processing software.

Book excerpt: While supervised corpus-based methods are highly accurate for different NLP tasks, including morphological tagging, they are difficult to port to other languages because they require resources that are expensive to create. As a result, many languages have no realistic prospect for morpho-syntactic annotation in the foreseeable future. The method presented in this book aims to overcome this problem by significantly limiting the necessary data and instead extrapolating the relevant information from another, related language. The approach has been tested on Catalan, Portuguese, and Russian. Although these languages are only relatively resource-poor, the same method can be in principle applied to any inflected language, as long as there is an annotated corpus of a related language available. Time needed for adjusting the system to a new language constitutes a fraction of the time needed for systems with extensive, manually created resources: days instead of years. This book touches upon a number of topics: typology, morphology, corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics, linguistic annotation, computational linguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Researchers and students who are interested in these scientific areas as well as in cross-lingual studies and applications will greatly benefit from this work. Book excerpt: A total of 20, 532 pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) were tagged and released in southeastern Alaska north of Sumner Strait during the years of 1938 to 1942 inclusive, and in 1945. The recovery of 7, 027 of these tags in the fish traps confirmed the findings of other investigators that the pink salmon stocks of the northern part of southeast Alaska are separate from those in the southern part. They also show that pink salmon enter the northern part of southeast Alaska through two paths: (1) through Icy Strait, and (2) through the lower end of Chatham Strait. No evidence was found of movement through Peril Strait from Salisbury Sound into Chatham Strait. The centers of density of each group of tags appeared to move in a consistent manner, but a smaller number of tags from each release were dispersed throughout the northern part of southeastern Alaska. Differences were noted between the movements of fish in odd and even years. Also a larger proportion of earlier tagged fish moved to recovery locations father [sic] inland. In all areas and in all years the fishing season closed about the time of the greatest abundance of fish in the fishery, therefore the later parts of the runs were not studied. Apparently the 1941 run was the largest and that in 1945 the smallest. Migration rates were studied by plotting the catch per trap as well as by the recovery of tags. The latter showed movements of 9.05 to 33.37 miles per day. Survival rates computed for thirty releases with total tag recovery periods of two or more weeks averaged 0.384. Weekly exploitation rates varied from 0.142 to 0.452 averaging 0.250. The weekly F exponential rate of fishing averaged 0.514. Recoveries of tags from seines were not used since their proportion of tags recovered was less than one-half their proportion of the catch. Recommendations are made for future tagging experiments based upon the results of this analysis.

Book excerpt: The 2nd international tagging and tracking symposium was held in San Sebastian, Spain, in October 2007, seven years after the first symposium was held in Hawaii in 2000 (Sibert and Nielsen 2001). In the intervening seven years, there have been major advances in both the capability and reliability of electronic tags and analytical approaches for geolocation of tagged animals in marine habitats. Advances such as increased data storage capacity, sensor development, and tag miniaturization have allowed researchers to track a much wider array of marine animals, not just large and charismatic species. Importantly, data returned by these tags are now being used in population analyses and movement simulations that can be directly utilized in stock assessments and other management applications. Papers in this volume are divided into three sections, the first describing insights into behavior achieved using acoustic, archival, and novel tags, the second reporting on advances in methods of geolocation, while the final section includes contributions where tag data have been used in management of marine species. Accurate documentation of animal movements and behaviors in critical marine habitats are impossible to obtain with other technologies. The management and conservation of marine species are critical in today’s changing ocean environment and as electronic tags become more accurate and functional for a diversity of organisms their application continues to grow, setting new standards in science and technology.
