Book Synopsis Race Against Time by : Jerry Mitchell
Download or read book Race Against Time written by Jerry Mitchell and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For almost two decades, investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell doggedly pursued the Klansmen responsible for some of the most notorious murders of the civil rights movement. This book is his amazing story. Thanks to him, and to courageous prosecutors, witnesses, and FBI agents, justice finally prevailed.” —John Grisham, author of The Guardians On June 21, 1964, more than twenty Klansmen murdered three civil rights workers. The killings, in what would become known as the “Mississippi Burning” case, were among the most brazen acts of violence during the civil rights movement. And even though the killers’ identities, including the sheriff’s deputy, were an open secret, no one was charged with murder in the months and years that followed. It took forty-one years before the mastermind was brought to trial and finally convicted for the three innocent lives he took. If there is one man who helped pave the way for justice, it is investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell. In Race Against Time, Mitchell takes readers on the twisting, pulse-racing road that led to the reopening of four of the most infamous killings from the days of the civil rights movement, decades after the fact. His work played a central role in bringing killers to justice for the assassination of Medgar Evers, the firebombing of Vernon Dahmer, the 16th Street Church bombing in Birmingham and the Mississippi Burning case. Mitchell reveals how he unearthed secret documents, found long-lost suspects and witnesses, building up evidence strong enough to take on the Klan. He takes us into every harrowing scene along the way, as when Mitchell goes into the lion’s den, meeting one-on-one with the very murderers he is seeking to catch. His efforts have put four leading Klansmen behind bars, years after they thought they had gotten away with murder. Race Against Time is an astonishing, courageous story capturing a historic race for justice, as the past is uncovered, clue by clue, and long-ignored evils are brought into the light. This is a landmark book and essential reading for all Americans.

Book Synopsis The Semantic Web - ISWC 2008 by : Amit P. Sheth
Download or read book The Semantic Web - ISWC 2008 written by Amit P. Sheth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-10-21 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Web is a globalinformationspace consistingoflinked documents andlinked data. As the Web continues to grow and new technologies, modes of interaction, and applications are being developed, the task of the Semantic Web is to unlock the power of information available on the Web into a common semantic inf- mation space and to make it available for sharing and processing by automated tools as well as by people. Right now, the publication of large datasets on the Web, the opening of data access interfaces, and the encoding of the semantics of the data extend the current human-centric Web. Now, the Semantic Web c- munity is tackling the challenges of how to create and manage Semantic Web content, how to make Semantic Web applications robust and scalable, and how to organize and integrate information from di?erent sources for novel uses. To foster the exchange of ideas and collaboration, the International Semantic Web Conference brings together researchers and practitioners in relevant disciplines such as arti?cial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, natural language processing, soft c- puting, and human–computer interaction. This volume contains the main proceedings of ISWC 2008, which we are - cited to o?er to the growing community of researchers and practitioners of the Semantic Web. We got a tremendous response to our call for research papers from a truly international community of researchers and practitioners from 41 countries submitting 261 papers. Each paper receivedan averageof 3.

Book Synopsis Ecology, behaviour and conservation of the charrs, genus Salvelinus by : Pierre Magnan
Download or read book Ecology, behaviour and conservation of the charrs, genus Salvelinus written by Pierre Magnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvelinus species are one of the most thoroughly studied groups of fishes. Many reasons explain this intense interest in charr biology. Charrs have a Holarctic distribution encompassing many Asian, North American, and European countries and occupy diverse marine and freshwater environments. Furthermore, the current distribution of charr includes areas that were directly influenced by climate and topographic change associated with the many Pleistocene glaciations. Undoubtedly, these conditions have promoted much of the tremendous morphological, ecological, and genetic variability and plasticity within Salvelinus species and they make charr very good models to study evolutionary processes 'in action'. Many charr species also exhibit demographic characteristics such as slow growth, late maturity, and life in extreme environments, that may increase their susceptibility to extinction from habitat changes and overexploitation, especially in depauperate aquatic habitats. This vulnerability makes understanding their biology of great relevance to biodiversity and conservation. Finally, charr are of great cultural, commercial, and recreational significance to many communities, and their intimate linkage with human societies has stimulated much interest in this enigmatic genus. This volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the fourth International Charr Symposium held in Trois-Rivières (Québec, Canada), from 26 June to 1 July 2000. It includes 31 papers on ecological interactions and behaviour, trophic polymorphism, movement and migration, ecophysiology and evolutionary genetics, ecological parasitology, environmental stress and conservation. These studies cannot cover all recent developments in the ecology, behaviour and conservation of Salvelinus species, but collecting them into a special volume should bring attention to current research on this important genus and stimulate further work on Salvelinus species.
Book Synopsis Pink Salmon, Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha, Tagging Experiments in Southeastern Alaska, 1938-42 and 1945 by : Roy E. Nakatani
Download or read book Pink Salmon, Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha, Tagging Experiments in Southeastern Alaska, 1938-42 and 1945 written by Roy E. Nakatani and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 20, 532 pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) were tagged and released in southeastern Alaska north of Sumner Strait during the years of 1938 to 1942 inclusive, and in 1945. The recovery of 7, 027 of these tags in the fish traps confirmed the findings of other investigators that the pink salmon stocks of the northern part of southeast Alaska are separate from those in the southern part. They also show that pink salmon enter the northern part of southeast Alaska through two paths: (1) through Icy Strait, and (2) through the lower end of Chatham Strait. No evidence was found of movement through Peril Strait from Salisbury Sound into Chatham Strait. The centers of density of each group of tags appeared to move in a consistent manner, but a smaller number of tags from each release were dispersed throughout the northern part of southeastern Alaska. Differences were noted between the movements of fish in odd and even years. Also a larger proportion of earlier tagged fish moved to recovery locations father [sic] inland. In all areas and in all years the fishing season closed about the time of the greatest abundance of fish in the fishery, therefore the later parts of the runs were not studied. Apparently the 1941 run was the largest and that in 1945 the smallest. Migration rates were studied by plotting the catch per trap as well as by the recovery of tags. The latter showed movements of 9.05 to 33.37 miles per day. Survival rates computed for thirty releases with total tag recovery periods of two or more weeks averaged 0.384. Weekly exploitation rates varied from 0.142 to 0.452 averaging 0.250. The weekly F exponential rate of fishing averaged 0.514. Recoveries of tags from seines were not used since their proportion of tags recovered was less than one-half their proportion of the catch. Recommendations are made for future tagging experiments based upon the results of this analysis.
