Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revised System of Cavalry Tactics: For the Use of the Cavalry and Mounted Infantry, C. S. A Much has been said regarding the relative advantage of single and double rank formation. We have seen that the depth of formation has been gradually decreasing during the last two thousand years from ten or even sixteen ranks to the present system. The most prefect system of formation is that which enables the commander to do the most service with a given number of men. We will suppose a Cavalry Brigade of four regiments to be drawn up to charge the enemy. With the single rank formation the Brigade will be formed in four lines and inflict upon the enemy four successive shocks, each of which would be nearly as severe as a charge in two ranks, and the number of shocks being double, the amount of execution would certainly be much greater. Another advantage in single ranks, is the grater facility with which troops can be handled and reformed, after the confusion of a charge, and what is of more importance, disorder or confusion are less liable to be incurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Use Tactical the Three Arms: Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry Every complete military force consists of three arms, - Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry. In battle, these three anus are united; and, other things being equal, that commander will prove victorious who is best acquainted with their combined use in the field. In order thoroughly to understand the proper use of the three arms combined, we must obviously begin by learning the proper use of each of them separately. Hence the importance of the subject of the present treatise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Military Art and Science: Or, Course of Instruction in Strategy, Fortification, Tactics of Battles, &E; Embracing the Duties of Staff, Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Engineers The following pages were hastily thrown together in the form of lectures, and delivered, during the past winter, before the Lowell Institute of Boston. They were written without the slightest intention of ever publishing them; but several officers of militia, who heard them delivered, or afterwards read them in manuscript, desire their publication, on the ground of their being useful to a class of officers now likely to be called into military service. It is with this view alone that they are placed in the hands of the printer. No pretension is made to originality in any part of the work; the sole object having been to embody, in a small compass, well established military principles, and to illustrate these by reference to the events of past history, and the opinions and practice of the best generals. Small portions of two or three of the following chapters have already appeared, in articles furnished by the author to the New York and Democratic Reviews, and in a "Report on the Means of National Defence," published by order of Congress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training Infantry In my commissioned service of over thirty-three years I have spent over twenty-two years with my regiment and three years in training a battalion of college cadets. I have been intimately associated with the national guard of one state and have had experience with the guard of four other states. I have seen something of foreign troops in both peace and war. In these many years I have observed the methods of training employed by a number of officers. Our infantry training has improved over what I first knew but there still exists in places a lack of completeness and system. Of late years a much greater interest than formerly has been taken in the tactical instruction and training of our officers and the progress has been marked. The tactician is, however, but the skilled mechanic; the tools with which he works are his troops. New recruits are like the lump of ore, of no use until converted into steel and then forged into shape. The making of this tool from the raw material is our principal business during peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tactics, Vol. 2 This, the second volume of tactics treats of the employment of cavalry, field and heavy artillery in field warfare, with due regard to the great influence exerted on them by the lessons of recent campaigns. Although cavalry was unable to win victories with the arm blanche in the Balkans, in south-africa, and in Manchuria, the science of combat as such should nevertheless point out that cavalry need by no means dispense with shock action; that, in spite of all mechanical improvements in fire arms, saber and lance have not, by a long shot, become useless. While I place a high value upon the use of fire action, I am firmly convinced that the days of mounted charges are, by no means, over. The more our opponents are convinced of the futility of a charge against infantry or artillery, the better the chances of our success.
