Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural battle known as the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns served as a sly cover for more deeply opposed views about the value of literature and the arts. One of the most public controversies of early modern Europe, the Quarrel has most often been depicted as pitting antiquarian conservatives against the insurgent critics of established authority. The Shock of the Ancient turns the canonical vision of those events on its head by demonstrating how the defenders of Greek literature—rather than clinging to an outmoded tradition—celebrated the radically different practices of the ancient world. At a time when the constraints of decorum and the politics of French absolutism quashed the expression of cultural differences, the ancient world presented a disturbing face of otherness. Larry F. Norman explores how the authoritative status of ancient Greek texts allowed them to justify literary depictions of the scandalous. The Shock of the Ancient surveys the diverse array of aesthetic models presented in these ancient works and considers how they both helped to undermine the rigid codes of neoclassicism and paved the way for the innovative philosophies of the Enlightenment. Broadly appealing to students of European literature, art history, and philosophy, this book is an important contribution to early modern literary and cultural debates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables of European History, Literature, Science, and Art, From A. D. 200 to 1888; And of American History, Literature, and Art V. An attempt has been made to indicate the importance of the author, potentate, or event by the size of the type. The accuracy of the judgment in this case must remain matter of Opinion. I am responsible in the columns of History and Litera ture my better informed Coadjutors in those of Science and Art. In the last two European Tables, largely concerned with contemporaries, a distinction which might be invidious has been abandoned, and all living writers or artists are printed in the same ordinary type. A rule has been made to include only those whose reputation has been established for at least ten years. In crowded departments of literature, as Romance, only representative names have been selected. A few are inserted rather in deference to popular judgment than in accordance with my own estimate. VI. Several names being repeated, sometimes at no great intervals, it has been considered essential to the pictorial representation aimed at, to distinguish by different colours, those associated with different nations. Practical obstacles have restricted the application of this rule; but it is hoped that the result will, even by the appear ance of the pages, convey some indication of the historic issues at stake. VII. When a writer has been very prominent in two departments, as of Science and Philosophy, or Literature and Art, as in the case of Leonardo da Vinci, Leibnitz, Descartes, and Pascal, his name appears in two columns. When his eminence in one eclipses that of his reputation in another, he appears, as in the case of Bacon and Galileo, only in that where he was pre - eminent. In rare instances a great name has been inserted, Slightly out of its exact place, at the head of the period which the author's influence seems to have dominated. The reception of the earlier editions has made me sensible at once of the utility of an undertaking, involving an amount of labour only inferior to that of compiling a dictionary, and of the hazards to which it is exposed. To many of my critics I am indebted for corrections of mistakes almost inevitable, and for supplying sometimes serious omissions. Others have made of an obviously rapid survey occasion to air crotchets, as that which regards it as a crime to speak of Ancient History, or of Charlemagne. It seems needful to state that the phrase English Literature here signifies Literature originating in England, and that in power indicates the period of a politician's greatest influence, in or out of office. To avoid cavil I now append the dates of the chief Prime Ministers, with the protest that I can only record the Chief. For details which, as expressly stated, are excluded from the design of the work, I refer my readers to the Annual Register. Book excerpt: Lists and catalogues have been en vogue in philosophy, cultural, media and literary studies for more than a decade. These explorations of enumerative modes, however, have not yet had the impact on classical scholarship that they deserve. While they routinely take (a limited set of) ancient models as their starting point, there is no comparably comprehensive study that focuses on antiquity; conversely, studies on lists and catalogues in Classics remain largely limited to individual texts, and – with some notable exceptions – offer little in terms of explicit theorising. The present volume is an attempt to close this gap and foster the dialogue between the recent theoretical re-appraisal of enumerative modes and scholarship on ancient cultures. The 16 contributions to the volume juxtapose literary forms of enumeration with an abundance of ancient non-, sub- or para-literary practices of listing and cataloguing. In their different approaches to this vast and heterogenous corpus, they offer a sense of the hermeneutic, epistemic and methodological challenges with which the study of enumeration is faced, and elucidate how pragmatics, materiality, performativity and aesthetics are mediated in lists and catalogues.

Book excerpt: Before the invention of printing, all forms of writing were done by hand. For a literary text to circulate among readers, and to be transmitted from one period in time to another, it had to be copied by scribes. As a result, two copies of an ancient book were different from one another, and each individual book or manuscript has its own history. The oldest of these books, those that are the closest to the time in which the texts were composed, are few, usually damaged, and have been often neglected in the scholarship. Ancient Latin Poetry Books presents a detailed study of the oldest manuscripts still extant that contain texts by Latin poets, such as Virgil, Terence, and Ovid. Analyzing their physical characteristics, their script, and the historical contexts in which they were produced and used, this volume shows how manuscripts can help us gain a better understanding of the history of texts, as well as of reading habits over the centuries. Since the manuscripts originated in various places of the Latin-speaking world, Ancient Latin Poetry Books investigates the readership and reception of Latin poetry in many different contexts, such schools in the Egyptian desert, aristocratic circles in southern Italy, and the Christian élite in late antique Rome. The research also contributes to our knowledge about the use of writing and the importance of the written text in antiquity. This is an innovative approach to the study of ancient literature, one that takes the materiality of texts into consideration.
