Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japonisme, the nineteenth-century fascination for Japanese art, has generated an enormous body of scholarship since the beginning of the twenty-first century, but most of it neglects the women who acquired objects from the Far East and sold them to clients or displayed them in their homes before bequeathing them to museums. The stories of women shopkeepers, collectors, and artists rarely appear in memoirs left by those associated with the japoniste movement. This volume brings to light the culturally important, yet largely forgotten activities of women such as Clémence d'Ennery (1823–1898), who began collecting Japanese and Chinese chimeras in the 1840s, built and decorated a house for them in the 1870s, and bequeathed the “Musée d'Ennery” to the state as a free public museum in 1893. A friend of the Goncourt brothers and a fifty-year patron of Parisian dealers of Asian art, d'Ennery's struggles to gain recognition as a collector and curator serve as a lens through which to examine the collecting and display practices of other women of her day. Travelers to Japan such as the Duchesse de Persigny, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Laure Durand- Fardel returned with souvenirs that they shared with friends and family. Salon hostesses including Juliette Adam, Louise Cahen d'Anvers, Princesse Mathilde, and Marguerite Charpentier provided venues for the discussion and examination of Japanese art objects, as did well-known art dealers Madame Desoye, Madame Malinet, Madame Hatty, and Madame Langweil. Writers, actresses, and artists-Judith Gautier, Thérèse Bentzon, Sarah Bernhardt, and Mary Cassatt, to name just a few- took inspiration from the Japanese material in circulation to create their own unique works of art. Largely absent from the history of Japonisme, these women-and many others-actively collected Japanese art, interacted with auction houses and art dealers, and formed collections now at the heart of museums such as the Louvre, the Musée Guimet, the Musée Cernuschi, the Musée Unterlinden, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century Scotland was one of the most powerful industrial nations in the world. Huge wealth was generated in cities such as Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee and this period saw the emergence of a new breed of mercantile art collector, eager to invest in modern European art. This book is the first to explore the Scottish taste for Impressionism and Post-Impressionism c.1865-1930 and the impact of this art on two generations of Scottish artists. The term 'Impressionism' was then applied to artists as diverse as Corot, Whistler and the Glasgow Boys, as well as Monet, Degas and their contemporaries and the essays in this book - by leading scholars in the field - address a number of themes, including the influence of Dutch and French Realism on Scottish art, modern life imagery in the work of the Glasgow Boys, the taste for Whistler and his importance for Scottish art; William Burrell's collection of Impressionist pictures; and the impact of French art on the Scottish Colourists. Published to accompany the major exhibition Impressionism and Scotland (2008). AUTHOR: Dr Frances Fowle holds a joint post as Senior Curator of French Art at the National Gallery of Scotland and Lecturer in Art History at the University of Edinburgh. She has published widely on nineteenth century art, collecting and the art market and her publications include Monet and French Landscape (Edinburgh 2006) and (with Richard Thomson) Soil and Stone: Impressionism, Urbanism, Environment (London 2003). 160 colour & 40 b/w illustrations

Book excerpt: After Admiral Perry broke through Japan's isolation in 1854, the current of Japanese trade flowed west again, bearing with it the colored woodcuts of Hokusai, Hiroshige, and their contemporaries. Some of the most avid collectors of these prints were the French Impressionists and Nabis, who found in them new ways to treat their own prints. In The Great Wave, Colta Feller Ives, Curator in Charge, Department of Prints and Photographs, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin.

Book excerpt: Issued in conjunction with the exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art of over 450 works of art from the legendary Havemeyer collection, formed at the turn of the century by pioneering American patrons of art Henry O. and Louisine Havemeyer, this lavishly illustrated catalogue combines 800 illustration (176 in color) with the collaborative efforts of 27 authors who examine the various aspects of the collection in summarizing essays and in entries on individual works. In addition, one essay is devoted to the Manhattan residence designed for the Havemeyers by Tiffany and Colman. An exhaustive 90-page chronology offers a perspective on the formation of the collection, outlining the roles of friend and advisor Mary Cassatt and a succession of dealers, and focusing on the history of the family and its business interests. 9.25x12.25" Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: A commitment to modernity is the underlying theme of this volume. Through essays that are interpretive and theoretical, the author seeks to situate the modern in contemporary cultural practice. She sets up an ideological vantage point to view modernism along its multiple tracks in India and the third world. The essays divide into three sections. The first two sections, Artists and ArtWork and Film/Narratives, raise questions of authorship, genre, and contemporary features of national culture that materialize into an aesthetic in the Indian context. The last section, Frames of Reference, formalizes the polemical options developed across the book. The essays here propose resistance to the depoliticization of narratives, and affirm an open-ended engagement with the avant-garde. They explore the possibility of art practice finding its own signifying space that is still a space for radical transformation.Geeta Kapur is an independent art critic and curator living in New Delhi. Her extensive publications on modern Indian art include the book Contemporary Indian Artists (Delhi, 1978), exhibition catalogues and monographs on artists. She is currently writing a monograph on Tyeb Mehta. Her essays on cultural criticism have been widely presented in forums of art history and cultural studies. Her curatorial work includes the show Bombay/Mumbai 1992 2001 in the multi-part exhibition titled Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis , at Tate Modern, London, in 2001. Geeta Kapur is a founder-editor of the Journal of Arts & Ideas and advisory editor to Third Text. She has held research fellowships at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, and Clare Hall, Cambridge University. For the past three decades, [Geeta Kapur s] has been the singular dominant presence in the field to a point that her writings alone seem to have constituted the whole field of modern Indian art theory and criticism. Tapati Guha-Thakurta, Biblio (Delhi), May June 2001. Geeta Kapur is a magisterial presence in the sphere of modern Indian art. [The] insistence on the primacy of bearing witness to creative practice has been the leitmotif of Kapur s work. . . . Kapur s contribution . . . is best understood by reflection on the radical change that her activity has brought about in Indian art criticism. Ranjit Hoskote, Art India (Mumbai), Vol. VI, 1, 2001. When Was Modernism is a book of essays: imaginative, interpretive, argumentative, polemical, political and, in the combined sense of all these, historical. . . . [It] provides an instance of passionate engagement that, at its best moments, verges on the poetic. Chaitanya Sambrani, ART AsiaPacific (Australia), Issue 30, 2001.
