Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods and Goals in Human Behavior Genetics examines trends in behavior genetics research and presents a critical review of methodology. This volume was planned to be of interest to two types of readers. First it provides information for psychologists who are interested in the genetics of personality and ability. Second, it is hoped that the volume will be of some value to geneticists who are desirous of knowing about recent attempts by psychologists to study hereditary factors in human behavior. The contributions to this volume are in some cases similar to papers presented during a meeting held in Louisville where this volume was planned, while the comments following these papers are based on tape recordings of the ensuing discussions. The book opens with a discussion of biochemical genetics and gene action. Separate chapters follow in topics such as application of anthropology to genetics, twin studies, heritability of personality traits, and suggestions for human behavior genetics based on animal studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heredity and Environment in the Functional Psychoses involves an epidemiological clinical study of twins carried out at the University Psychiatric Institute in Oslo. The author reviews the history and nosological aspects of psychiatry. In his study of twin genetics, the author seeks to answer the questions "What is inherited?" and "How is it inherited?" In his review of 342 pairs of twins in the Central Register of Psychosis, his study had the following aims: to obtain true concordance figures for all types of functional psychoses; to study problems pertaining to nosology; and to study a larger sample of discordant pairs in order to clarify crucial environmental factors. His findings show that concordance figures for schizophrenia are 25-38 per cent in monozygotic twins and 4-10 per cent ion dizygotic twins. He points out that the difference in such concordance rates between the two types of twins is statistically significant. The data supports the (weak) assumption of a genetic factor in the etiology of schizophrenia. Behavioral scientists, psychiatrists, child psychologists, and researchers involved in genetics will find this book helpful and informative.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, this introductory text approaches schizophrenia as a complex biopsychological condition. Drawing from the fields of descriptive psychiatry, psychopathology, neurochemistry, genetics, life history research, and institutional practice, the author details our increasing understanding of the nature and etiology of schizophrenia at the time. He organizes and evaluates current concepts and findings from these areas, with a view towards integration. This volume was intended to serve as an introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, as well as for students in psychiatry, psychiatric nursing, and clinical social work. The author assumes that a comprehensive understanding of schizophrenia requires a synthesis of findings from diverse fields and emphasizes the compatibility of, and points of contact between, clinical psychological, and biological approaches. Here is a text that introduces the reader to this challenging subject and to contributions from a variety of allied disciplines. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Book excerpt: First published in 1966, Thompson and Thompson Genetics and Genomics in Medicine has become an essential textbook for medical students, genetic counseling students, students in laboratory medicine, and more advanced trainees. With its focus on fundamental principles in human genetics and genomics and their application to medicine, the book has served many as a well-thumbed resource they return to over and over. Such students can continue to depend on this valuable text, joining those in newer fields of genome data analysis for all they need to know about genetics and genomics throughout their basic science training, clinical placements and beyond. Coverage includes new discoveries—such as the functional roles of non-coding RNAs, chromatin regulation and epigenetics—latest technologies, and new diagnoses they are enabling. Under an expanded title, this ninth edition has been completely revised by a new editorial team overseeing a large cadre of contributing authors. Support groups have also assisted to update illustrations featuring beautiful images of those living with genetic conditions. - Comprehensive coverage of: genomes in biology and medicine; copy number and structural genomic variation; novel discoveries; latest technology; and new genetic diagnoses - Over 40 clinical case studies, capturing the latest challenges of variable expression, pleiotropy, and complex disorders through new diagnostic strategies - Full-color text, illustrations, updated line diagrams, and clinical photos - End-of-chapter questions and comprehensive answers to challenge the reader to consolidate the material into practice and prepare for examinations - USMLE-style and multiple choice questions - Updated and new clinical cases, supported with photography by the not-for-profit organization, Positive Exposure - New content on growing role of sequencing and novel functional assays in diagnosis and screening of genetic conditions - New chapter on Epigenetics - Clearer and more precise terminology, in response to contemporary and evolving guidelines - New sections describing the use (and need for) genetic information from diverse populations, including unique indigenous and founder populations, for diagnosis and management.

Book excerpt: Tables are presented based on the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential for nonpolar molecules to be used in the representation of second and third virial coefficients and equation-of-state corrections for enthalpy, entropy, specific heats at constant volume and at constant pressure, the ratio of specific heats, the isentropic expansion coefficient, and the velocity of sound. The treatment for effects involving three molecules jointly uses an empirical adjustment of the Lennard-Jones force parameters within a cluster of three independently of the value for an isolated pair. A graphical correlation of ratios of these parameters with the critical constants is also shown which permits better estimates for compact nonpolar molecules with known critical constants but with limited data of state.

The focus is on statistical applications within the field of engineering risk and safety analysis. Coverage includes Bayesian methods. Such knowledge facilitates the understanding of the influence of random phenomena and gives a deeper understanding of the role of probability in risk analysis. The text is written for students who have studied elementary undergraduate courses in engineering mathematics, perhaps including a minor course in statistics. This book differs from typical textbooks in its verbal approach to many explanations and examples.

Book excerpt: Having investigated temperament for four decades, mostly at the University of Warsaw, Stelau decided that it was time to integrate the findings encysted in widely separated studies that are geographically narrow, limited to specific paradigms and conceptualizations, or focus on a select age group. The thoroughness of his compendium forced him to consider only what he sees as the most important issues because of size constraints. He writes primarily for psychology students, but also has in mind professionals from the many fields in which particular views of temperament have been developed and are being used in isolation.
