Book excerpt: An anthology of True CrimeParricide, as defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary, is a noun meaning "the killing of a parent or other near relative". According to statistics, in the United States, about five parents are killed every week by their biological children. Matricide and patricide are both particularly rare occurrences when stood up against other murder statistics. While it only makes up about 1% of all homicides in the United States, it is still a shocking crime when it happens. Primarily, parricide is committed by the sons of the parents, ages 16 to 19. This aligns with makes being the primary perpetrators of all violent crime. Patricide is also twice as likely to be committed as a matricide. All in all, according to the statistics, male sons are more likely to kill their fathers when it comes to parricide. This knowledge is part of what makes the case of Tabitha Messina particularly disturbing.Made famous by her episode on Snapped: Killer Couples, Tabitha Messina is a bit of a mystery as far as her home life growing up. What is known about Tabitha is that she was born on October 26th in 1988. She was born in Cuyahoga County in Ohio, to father Richard Messina and mother Karen. From the beginning, her childhood was something that no child should ever have to endure. Her parents, it seemed, were not quite ready to be parents. Richard Messina was 31 at the time that Tabitha was born, and he was a hard-partying type. He wasn't ready to put away his youth. As far as her mother went, Karen Messina was an exotic dancer. Not only that, but Karen was absent for large parts of Tabitha's childhood. Tabitha was left yearning for a motherly presence that she couldn't seem to fill.

Book excerpt: Phil Chalmers has spent more than a decade visiting high security prisons to interview young offenders, his mission is to attempt to answer the questions we all are asking: Why do the crimes continue to happen? What sends these kids over the edge? Could we have seen these crimes coming and stopped them? How can we keep our own kids safe? In Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer, Phil explores the reasons why teens kill; the warning signs we must be looking for; and offers a game plan to keep our homes, schools, and communities safe. This book may help save your life or the life of a child you love! What the experts say: “Phil Chalmers has interviewed the killers. He has corresponded with them extensively. He has exhaustively researched their crimes. There is no human being alive who knows more about these killers, and as you read this book, you will truly be taken Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer.” Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman, U.S. Army (retired), murder expert, and author of Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill “This book has incredible knowledge and information that is invaluable to law enforcement, school resource officers, school personnel, and parents. Every single person who is in a school environment needs to read this book, and understand that some of the most horrific crimes that are being performed are being carried out by our children.” Officer Russ Diehl, School Resource / DARE Officer, Brimfield Police Dept, Kent, Ohio “To go into the mind of a killer, you need to go into their hearts, and Phil has done just that. Phil’s book raises your awareness of where we have gone wrong in society and how we can make major changes with simple steps.” Joe Shillaci, Former Miami Homicide investigator and star of the A&E show The First 48

Book excerpt: In a tragic and shocking story of true crime, Peter Maas gives insight into how the brutal murder of a young wife by her husband sparked a nasty and threatening custody battle between the couple’s families. In 1984, the infant son of Kenneth and Teresa Taylor was left orphaned after Kenneth brutally murdered Teresa using a dumbbell to crack her skull. In the months that followed, an intoxicatingly traumatic battle for the infant’s custody between Kenneth’s parents and Teresa’s sister would destroy more lives than necessary. Shedding light on the motivations of a sociopathic killer, Peter Maas shares the gripping story of the Taylor family beginning with the murder of Teresa and progressing through the abduction of their child when the custody case went against the desires of Kenneth, leading to further incriminating actions, even as he was in jail after being convicted of murder. “A wrenching story with popular appeal.” — Library Journal

As in the first volume devoted to the collection (published in 1988 in English and Italian editions), the text is here organized first by national school, then alphabetically by artist, with individual works arranged chronologically. For each drawing, the authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating, iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as provenance and a complete bibliography.

Book excerpt: From legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting story about “an ordinary man in an extraordinary condition rising above hatred” (The Washington Post) and bringing the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine together—a “joyful, uplifting” (Entertainment Weekly) tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences, “the sign of a master elevating his own legendary game yet again” (USA TODAY). Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face—including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others. “Written in masterly Stephen King’s signature translucent…this uncharacteristically glimmering fairy tale calls unabashedly for us to rise above our differences” (Booklist, starred review). Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, an “elegant whisper of a story” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), “perfect for any fan of small towns, magic, and the joys and challenges of doing the right thing” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
