Download or read book Static Stability Characteristics of a Winged Body with Various Inlet Configurations at Mach Numbers of 2, 5, 8, and 10 written by R. H. Burt and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been conducted at Mach numbers of 2, 5, 8, and 10 to determine the static stability characteristics of a winged body configuration with various sizes and shapes of inlets attached. Selected results of the longitudinal stability and drag characteristics are presented for each configuration at the various mach numbers. The effect of inlet position along the model on the aerodynamic characteristics of two inlet configurations is presented for Mach numbers of 8 and 10. The investigation was performed at free-stream unit Reynolds numbers from 0.05 to 0.54 million per inch, angles of attack from -30 to 45 deg, and angles of yaw from 0 to 12 deg. (Author).

Book excerpt: The X-15 was the ultimate "X" vehicle. Built in the 1950s, she became the fastest and highest-flying winged aircraft of its time. During 199 flights from 1959 through 1968, she collected data about hypersonic flight that was invaluable to aeronautics and to developers of the space shuttle. This book describes the genesis of the program, the design and construction of the aircraft, years of research flights and the experiments that flew aboard them.-publisher description.

Book excerpt: NOTE; NO FURTHER DISCOUNT ON THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Signficantly reduced list price The technologies for the reentry and recovery from space might change over time, but the challenge remains one of the most important and vexing in the rigorous efforts to bring spacecraft and their crews and cargo home successfully. Returning to Earth after a flight into space is a fundamental challenge, and contributions from the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate in aerodynamics, thermal protection, guidance and control, stability, propulsion, and landing systems have proven critical to the success of the human space flight and other space programs. Without this base of fundamental and applied research, the capability to fly into space would not exist.
