Book excerpt: Excerpt from System of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 3: General Diseases and Diseases of the Nervous System One of the contributors, Dr. Basham, was removed by death before he had completed his work, but I was most kindly and ably assisted by Dr. Frederick Roberts, in the anxious work of editing mss., which in some cases proved to be but half completed. To Dr. Growers, I am deeply grateful, not only for the very able papers which he has written, but also for his kindness in rendering me very great assistance in the preparation of this volume for the press. It is not a matter for much surprise that a work, which has taken so long a time to produce, by men who had already become eminent in our profession - the longevity of which is less than that of most - should not be completed until many of its contributors had passed beyond the reach of either our praise or our blame, and that they should not have seen the work, which they had done so carefully, placed in its proper niche in the edifice that they had helped to raise. To two Of these, Drs. Warburton Begbie and Sibson, I have made some allusion in my note of introduction to the fourth volume; of the others, from whom I had expected further help, I must say something here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nervous System: For General Practitioner and Student The modern physician is not satisfied with a mere enumeration of facts. In reading a description of any malady he wishes also to know the reason of the disturbed functions and the anatomical substratum of the morbid phenomena. Otherwise speaking he feels that he must know the relation of a certain manifestation to the normal and morbid physiology of an affected tissue or organ. The knowledge of pathology is therefore a sine qua non to every think ing man. This chapter must therefore precede any other in giving an account of a certain disease. As I am aiming almost exclusively to present Nervous Diseases from a practical standpoint, I naturally avoided too technical and debatable points of pathology, but on the contrary endeavored to present the most essential changes necessary for a thorough under standing of various clinical manifestations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nervous System For this reason the literature of our school has been diligently searched for remedies which are indicated, and'also those giving some clinical basis for their employment. For the same reason the adjuvant and palliative agents, from all sources, have not been neglected, since the relief of suffering and deformity may be the only assistance which we can offer to many who come to us for relief. Under the conditions attending the compilation of this book, it was not feasible to denote the origin of data in the majority of instances, but the writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to the many contribu tors of articles upon the several subjects in recent current literature, and especially to the authors of the current text-books on Diseases of the Nervous System, Therapeutics, and Electro - therapeutics. These have been freely drawn upon for material, but their presentation of the subject has been so often modified that the authors should not be held responsible for the state ments in their present form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pathology of the Nervous System In offering this volume to medical students and practitioners the authors believe that they are meeting a real need. They have attempted to describe clearly the anatomical changes which are associated with disorders of nervous function, to discuss briefly questions of pathogenesis, and to indicate in a few words, where it is possible, the relationship between structural alterations and clinical signs and symptoms. It may be true that further advances in our knowledge of nervous diseases must depend on the study of function and disorders of function more than on the consideration of advanced structural defects, but scientific speculation in regard to the former must always be tempered by acquaintance with the latter. No student of neurology or of psychiatry can be fully equipped for his work unless he has spent time and energy in a neuro-pathological laboratory, and the object of this book will be achieved if it serves to economise his time and to guide his energy. The authors are conscious of the debt they owe to the Board of Management and Medical Staff of the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic for the opportunities of working in the laboratory of that institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Nervous Diseases In brief, the general affections are considered first, and attention is then progressively directed to those which are more and more special. The advantages Of this arrangement are universally recognized in the Other sciences, and its applicability to medicine seems hardly to need demonstration. Further, diseases clinically allied have been considered in close connection, and by this means it has been sought to accentuate the practical features of the subject. In building upon this basis atten tion has also been devoted to the anatomy and physiology Of the nervous system, these subjects being incorporated with the consideration Of the various diseases. The choice Of subjects and the space devoted to each have been arranged with special reference to practical needs, and it is believed that the mode Of handling details is conducive to clearness, utility, and completeness. A glance at the List Of Contributors, Opposite the title-page, will Show that this volume represents the views of writers widely recognized as authorities in neurological science, and especially known in connection with the subjects assigned to them. The work is likewise representative of our great medical schools, and hence it embodies not only high authority, but is likewise illustrative of the best methods Of instruction. Free use has been made of illustrations in black and colors. The series Of pictures is largely original, and Where authenticity is requisiteit has been attained by photographic methods. It is confidently hoped that the other engravings, and especially those which are diagrammatic will be found full Of assistance. In conclusion, the editor desires to extend his sincere thanks to his colleagues for their recognition of the importance Of the work and their earnest support in its production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of Lectures Upon Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Medical Department of Columbia University, New York Examples. The nervous system of a frog experimentally deprived of its hemispheres, capable of automatic acts of swimming. The automatic act of respiration in man. In man the facial, laryngeal, intercostal, thoracic, and diaphragmatic respiratory muscles act in definite succession and rhythm in the act of breathing; and this act is presided over by a single centre in the medulla controlling the lower medullary and spinal centres. The highest type of nervous system is the complex type. There are the lower centres as in the simple type. There are higher centres controlling the lower centres, as in the compound type. There is a supreme mass controlling both the others. This is the form found in all vertebrates, and the degree of evolution in the highest or supreme mass determines the place of the animal in the scale of intelligence. In man the supreme mass is the cerebral cortex, the next lower or automatic centres are the optic thalami and basal ganglia, including gray masses in the cerebral axis; the lowest or reflex centres are the cranial nerve nuclei in the cerebral axis and the gray matter of the spinal cord segments. These distant gray masses are joined with one another in all possible combinations by means of the white nerve tracts, which pass in all directions around and within them. The human nervous system consists of a peripheral system and a central system. The peripheral system comprises all the nerves. The central system includes: First. The spinal cord and cranial nerve nuclei. Secondly. The cerebellum; gray masses of the medulla, pons, and crura cerebri; corpora quadrigemina, optic thalami, and corpora striata. Thirdly. The cerebral cortex. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System The following clinical lectures were delivered at the New York State Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, and at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, by Prof. William A. Hammond, and I have collected them with the hope that they might serve to add something to the clinical literature of nervous diseases. I have endeavored to report these lectures in full, and together with the histories of the cases, which were prepared by myself after careful study and prolonged observation, they constitute a clinical volume which, while it does not claim to he exhaustive, or to embrace all the diseases of the nervous system, will nevertheless be found to contain many of the more important affections of the kind that are commonly met with in practice. As these lectures were intended especially for the benefit of students, the chief aim of the author has been to present merely practical views, fully illustrated by cases, with the results derived from treatment, as far as that was possible; and in so doing he has made no attempt to enter into the pathology or the morbid anatomy, but has confined himself to a full consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the treatment of each affection, particularly in their relations to the cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at Guy's Hospital IN presenting this work to my readers, I may fairly be expected to preface it with a few words of explanation. In the year 1868 a part of my course on Medicine delivered at Guy's Hospital relating to nervous diseases was published in a periodical form. Ever since that time the lectures have been frequently perused by my pupils, who have constantly demanded of me their reprint in a separate form. To this appeal, so often made, I now respond in the present volume. It contains my original lectures with the additional matter which a subsequent ten years has enabled me to accumulate. Much of this has already appeared in the Guy's Hospital Reports, ' but its repetition in this volume was inevitable, since it is evident that the cases which have been thought of sum cient importance to publish separately would necessarily be the most valuable ones with which to illustrate my lectures. The order of the subjects which I have found useful for lecture cannot be justified on scientific grounds, but I may console myself with the conviction that with our present existing nomenclature it is impossible to frame a systematic view of nervous diseases on any rational basis whatever, be it anatomical, pathological, or clinical. I have therefore endeavoured to make the best of a heterogeneous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Forms of Nervous Disease Advances in knowledge in the department of neurology have been of late more rapid than in any other branch of medicine. The result has been to render diagnosis in many affections, previously obscure, both more precise and less difficuThis work is not a treatise upon nervous diseases. It is a series of clinical studies of the more familiar types. The chief source of all medical knowledge is the careful study of groups of cases by those who have at their disposal a large supply of clinical material. The data which have been utilized in the preparation of these studies have been selected from American sources, chiefly from the Nervous Clinic of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. My assistants in that Clinic have joined heartily in the work of collecting and analyzing the material, and have prepared several of the most valuable chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nervous System: A Text-Book of Neurology and Psychiatry The diseases of the nervous system are no longer compassed by a description of, the gross lesions of the brain, spinal cord, cranial and peripheral nerves. The more limited symptomatology of disorders of these structures, which in this work has been called sensori - motor neurology, has been expanded in two directions - in one by the increase in our knowledge of the historically oldest portion of the nervous system, namely, the sympathetic and autonomic (vegetative) nervous system and in the other by the increase in our knowledge of the mechanisms that Operate at the psychic or mental levels. The vegetative nervous system is in close functional relations with the endocrinous glands, and, although some of the endocrinopathies may ultimately turn out not to be exclusively nervous affections, still these organs of internal secretion are so closely related from all points of View, embryological, anatomical, physiological, pathological, and pharmacodynamic, with the vegetative nervous system that their dis ordered functions must needs be considered in a work dealing with the diseases of the nervous system. The symptomatology of this region constitutes the borderland of neurology and internal medicine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
