Experimental and Characterisation Methods: The synthetic methods and characterisation techniques used throughout this thesis are described. Synthesis, Structure and Transport Properties of Bi2Zr2-xTixO7 Phases: The characterisation of Bi2Zr2-xTixO7 compounds is reported for the first time. An increase in conductivity of 3 orders of magnitude is found for the Zr- rich end member. Bi2Ti2O7, which adopts centrosymmetric space group Fd-3m has been found to be SHG active. Structure Solution of beta-Bi2Sn2O7 and Properties of Bi2Sn2O7 Based Materials: Analysis of synchrotron powder X-ray and powder neutron diffraction data has shown for the first time that beta-Bi2Sn2O7 is not cubic and has a monoclinic structure, most likely in space group Pc. The effect of doping in both Bi2Sn2O7 and Bi2ScNbO7 on their respective conductivities has been explored. Synthesis and Characterisation of Nd2Zr2O7: A range of average and local structural techniques have been used to demonstrate that Nd2Zr2O7 prepared by wet-chemistry routes adopts the fluorite-type structure, as opposed to the pyrochlore structure adopted by samples synthesised by solid state methods. Synthesis, Characterisation, Simulations and Properties of Bi6WO12 and Related Oxide Ion Conductors: We report for the first time details of DFT molecular dynamics simulations to probe the oxide ion conduction pathways in the oxide ion conductor Bi6WO12. Appropriate doping has led to enhancements in oxide ion conductivity. Simulations, Characterisation and Properties of New Bismuth Vanadate Oxide Ion Conductors: DFT molecular dynamics simulations carried out on Bi19V2O33.5 have revealed the O2- migration pathways in this material with exceptional ionic conductivity. The synthesis and characterisation of new doped bismuth vanadates with formula Bi19-xMxV2O33.5-x/2 (M = Ca2+ or Sr2+), also excellent oxide ion conductors, is reported. Overall Conclusions and Suggestions for Future Work: This briefly reviews the conclusions and makes suggestions for further work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nano-oxide materials lend themselves to applications in a wide variety of emerging technological fields such as microelectronics, catalysts, ceramics, coatings, and energy storage. However, developing new routes for making nano-based materials is a challenging area for solid-state materials chemists. This book does just that by describing a novel method for preparing them. The authors have developed a novel low-temperature, self-propagating synthetic route to nano-oxides by the solution combustion and combustible precursor processes. This method provides the desired composition, structure, and properties for many types of technologically useful nanocrystalline oxide materials like alumina, ceria, iron oxides, titania, yttria, and zirconia, among others. The book is particularly instructive in bringing readers one step closer to the exploration of nanomaterials. Students of nanoscience can acquaint themselves with the actual production and evaluation of nanopowders by this route, while academic researchers and industrial scientists will find answers to a host of questions on nano-oxides. The book also provides an impetus for scientists in industrial research to evaluate and explore new ways to scale up the production of nanomaterials, offering helpful suggestions for further research.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional polar oxide materials occupy a very crucial position in modern technology. The polar oxide materials exhibit many technologically important properties like second-harmonic generation, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and possibly ferroelectricity caused by their polar crystal structure. Though the structure-property relationship in polar oxide materials is well studied, the understanding of how the structural building units are joined to form a new polar crystal structure has been less sufficient. A synthetic approach using cations susceptible to second-order Jahn Teller (SOJT) distortion like octahedrally coordinated d0 cations (Ti4+, V5+, Mo6+) and lone-pair cations (Sn2+, Sb3+, Te4+) is successful in preparing new polar oxide materials. We were successful in preparing several new polar oxide materials, Zn2(MoO4)(AO3) (A = Se4+, Te4+) (P21), BiO(IO3) (Pca21), Li6(Mo2O5)3(SeO3)6 (Pmn21), Na2(WO3)3(SeO3)2H2O (P31c), and Na6(W6O19)(SeO3)2 (C2) and other centrosymmetric materials, Li2(MO4)(TeO3)2 (M = Mo6+, W6+) (P21/n). In this dissertation, we report the syntheses, crystal structures, physical properties, functional properties, and understanding of the structure-property relationship of the reported oxide materials.

Book excerpt: Layered double hydroxides are one of the variety of names given to a family of layered materials first discovered in Sweden in 1842. These materials are interesting because their layer cations can be changed among a wide selection, and the interlayer anion can also be (nearly) freely chosen. Like cationic clays, they can be pillared and can exchange interlayer species -- thus increasing applications and making new routes to derivatives. The principle areas of application include catalyst support, anion scavengers, polymer stabilisers, and antacids. In the last several years, reviews and studies of LDHs have dealt with these uses. This book aims to update the current body of LDH knowledge from a wide array of views. The first section addresses the synthesis and physiochemical characterisation of these materials, and section two focuses on the applications of LDHs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemistry of metal oxides, both single and mixed metal oxides, relevant to heterogeneous catalysis such as relationships among the composition, structure, and chemical properties of mixed oxides, is provided in perspective. The important chemical properties in heterogeneous catalysis are acid–base and reduction–oxidation (redox) properties, where ionic radii, electronegativity, valency, and tendency to form covalent bond of constituent elements are most influential. Structural factors such as lattice defects and nonstoichiometry are also relevant. Although the surface of metal oxides is different from the solid bulk and changes depending on various factors, the surface reflects more or less the solid bulk and the knowledge of bulk properties is useful to understand the catalysis of mixed oxides. In some cases, the solid bulk actually takes part in catalysis. Other fundamental features of metal oxide catalysis like synergistic effects of more than two different active sites (acid and base, acid and oxidation, etc.) are also discussed.
