Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled SYNTHESIS, OPTICAL AND LUMINESCENCE STUDIES OF RHENIUM(I) DIIMINE ALKYNYL COMPLEXES AND THEIR UTILIZATION AS BUILDING BLOCKS FOR THE ASSEMBLY OF MULTINUCLEAR AND MIXED-METAL COMPLEXES submitted by LAM Chan Fung for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2005 A series of mononuclear rhenium(I) diimine complexes with hyperbranched or functional alkynyl ligands, [C H -1,3-(HC C C H C C) -5-{Re(CO) (N N)(C C 6 3 6 4 2 3 t C H C C)}] (N N = bpy, Bu bpy) and [Re(CO) (N N)(C C C C R)] (R = C H I-p, 6 4 2 3 6 4 C H C C SiMe -p, CHC C H-p, C H OSiMe Bu-p, CHOH-p) have been 6 4 3 6 4 6 4 2 6 4 synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of [CH-1,3-(HCCCHCC)-5-{Re(CO)(Bubpy)(CCCHCC)}] and 63 64 2 32 64 [Re(CO)(Bubpy)(CCCCCHCCH-p)] have been presented. By employing 32 64 [Re(CO) (N N)(C C C C C H I-p)] as a precursor, a series of dinuclear rhenium(I) 3 6 4 alkynyl complexes with extended conjugation, [Re(CO) (N N)(C CC C C H C C 3 6 4 t (C H ) C C C H C CC C)Re(CO) (N N)] [n = 0, 1; N N = Bu bpy, (CF ) bpy], 6 4 n 6 4 3 2 3 2 have been prepared. Additionally, a series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical trinuclear rhenium(I) alkynyl complexes, [C H -1,3,5-{Re(CO) (N N)(C C C C 6 3 3 t t C H C C)} ] [N N = Bu bpy, (CF ) bpy] and [C H -1,3-{Re(CO) (Bu bpy)(C C 6 4 3 2 3 2 6 3 3 2 C C C H C C C H C C)} -5-{Re(CO) ( Bu bpy)(C C C H C C)}], have also 6 4 6 4 2 3 2 6 4 been synthesized. The lowest-lying excited states of these complexes were 3 3 tentatively assigned as admixture of MLCT[d (Re) *(N N)], LLCT[ (C C R) 3 *(N N)] and IL[ (C C R) *(C C R)] origin. Besides, a series of luminescent heterometallic rhenium(I) palladium(II) t complexes, trans-[Pd(PEt ) Cl{(C C Ar C C)Re(CO) (N N)}] (N N = bpy, Bu bpy; 3 2 3 2 Ar = C H S, C H ) and trans-[Pd(PEt ) {(C C C H C C)Re(CO) ( Bu bpy)} ], have 4 2 6 4 3 2 6 4 3 2 2 been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of t trans-[Pd(PEt)Cl{(CCCHCC)Re(CO)(N N)}] (N N = bpy, Bu bpy) have been 32 64 3 2 determined. Their emission was attributed to MLCT[d (Re) *(N N)] 3 phosphorescence mixed with LLCT[ (C C R) *(N N)] character. A lower emission energy for the hetero-bimetallic complex was observed upon coordination of the electron-rich palladium(II) moiety into the rhenium(I) alkynyl system. However, replacement of the remaining chloro group on the palladium centre with an additional rhenium(I) alkynyl moiety resulted in a higher energy emission for the hetero-trimetallic complex. A series of luminescent heterometallic rhenium(I) platinum(II) phosphine complexes, [{Re(CO)(NN)(CCCHCC)}Pt(PP)] [PP = dppe, depe, 3 6 4 2 t cis-(PEt), trans-(PEt ); N N = Bu bpy, (CF ) bpy], have been synthesized. The 32 3 2 2 3 2 X-ray crystal structure of [{Re(CO){(CF)bpy}(C C CH C C)}Pt(dppe)] has 3 3 2 6 4 2 been determined. The emission was ascribed as derived from states of a [d (Re) 3 3 *(N N)] MLCT origin that mixed with LLCT[ (C C R) *(N N)] character; or alternatively, as an excited state of a [ {C C C H C C Pt(P P)} *(N N)] 6 4 metalloligand-to-ligand charge transfer character. Another new class of luminescent heterometallic rhenium(I)platinum(II) polypyridine alkynyl complexes, t [Re

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND FUNCTIONALIZATION OF LUMINESCENT ALKYNYLPLATINUM(II) COMPLEXES OF TRIDENTATE N-DONOR LIGANDS AS BUILDING BLOCKS FOR METALLOFOLDAMERS, SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES AND NANOSTRUCTURES submitted by LEUNG Yu Lut Sammual for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2013 A series of dinuclear platinum(II)-containing meta-phenylene ethynylene (mPE) oligomers and binaphthol derivatives of various lengths, end-capped with symmetric or unsymmetric platinum(II) terpyridine units has been synthesized and characterized. In addition, a mononuclear complex with five repeating mPE units has also been synthesized for comparison studies. Dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes with the optimum length of meta-phenylene ethynylene (mPE) units and the binaphthol derivatives have been found to exhibit a strong tendency to fold back onto themselves to form short helical strands through the stabilization of Pt---Pt and  interactions. The steric bulk of the terpyridine ligands and the length of the oligomeric bridge have been found to affect the extent of the intramolecular Pt---Pt interaction that governs the i stabilization of the short helical strand in solution. Their folding properties via Pt---Pt and  stacking interactions have been studied by H NMR, 2D ROESY NMR, electronic absorption, circular dichroism and emission spectroscopies. A series of dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes bridged by the amphiphilic binaphthol backbone bearing two triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TEG) chains has been synthesized and characterized. Particularly, one of the complexes with the optimum length of the binaphthol derivative has been shown to undergo transverse aggregation arising from the intra- and intermolecular Pt---Pt and  stacking interactions in aqueous solutions. Such hierarchical assembly of helical strands into tubular columns has been studied by electronic absorption, circular dichroism, and emission spectroscopies, as well as electron microscopies. On the other hand, a series of dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes based on the amphiphilic oligo(para-phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) moiety has been synthesized and characterized. Some of the complexes have been shown to self-assemble into various nanostructures from helical fibers to nanotubes, which have been observed in electron microscopies. The supramolecular polymerization process that occurs through non- covalent Pt---Pt and  stacking interactions during self-assembly has also been studied by the NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. A series of alkynylplatinum(II) complexes with a tridentate pyridine-based N- heterocyclic carbene 2,6-bis(1-butylimidazol-2-ylidenyl)pyridine) ligand, II [Pt (C DEGREESN DEGREESC)(CCR)](PF ), and their chloroplatinum(II) precursor complex, II [Pt (C DEGREESN DEGREESC)Cl)](PF ) have been synthesized and characterized. One of the alkynylplatinum(II) complexes has also been structurally characterized by X-ray ii crystallography. Their electrochemistry, electronic absorption and luminescence properties have been studied. Nanosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy has also been performed to probe the nature of the excited state.

Book excerpt: This dissertation, "Design and Synthesis of Luminescent Alkynylplatinum (II) Terpyridine Complexes and Their Function as Optical Probes for Biomolecules and Ions: From Self-aggregarion, Supramolecular Assembly to Host-guest Chemistry" by Ching-lam, Margaret, Yeung, 楊靖琳, was obtained from The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong) and is being sold pursuant to Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License. Abstract: A number of cationic water-soluble alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes, [Pt(tpy){C≡CCH2OC6H3-(CH2OH)2-3,5}]OTf, [Pt(tBu3tpy){C≡CCH2OC6H3- (CH2OH)2-3,5}]Cl, [Pt(tpy){C≡CCH2OC6H4-(CH2OH)-4}]OTf, [Pt(tpy){C≡CC6H3- (CH2OH)2-3,5}]OTf, [Pt(tpy){C≡CC6H4-(CH2OH)-4}]OTf, [Pt(tpy)(C≡C-C≡CH)]OTf and [Pt(tpy){C≡CC6H4(CH2NMe3)-4}](OTf)2, have been synthesized. Phosphate anion derivatives of polyanionic nature, e.g. adenosine triphosphate and tyrosine-containing phosphopeptide, were employed to investigate the induced supramolecular helical assembly behaviors of several of the water-soluble platinum(II) complexes through the study of their UV-vis absorption, emission and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies. The extent of such induced self-aggregation properties has been shown to be dependent on the concentration of substrates and capable of screening their respective structurally similar analogues. Two of the complexes were further explored for their use as label-free detection probes for real-time monitoring of the conversion of these phosphate anion derivatives to their metabolic products catalyzed by several biologically important enzymes. Michaelis-Menten analyses have been performed to determine the kinetic parameters. Supramolecular self-assembly and disassembly behaviors of water-soluble platinum(II) complexes have also been explored for their sensing applications for biomacromolecules with quantitative analyses based on UV-vis, emission and CD spectral titration studies. Making use of the selective binding affinity of aptamers towards their target substrates, the extent of self-assembly of the platinum(II) complexes in the presence of lysozyme and thrombin, which arose from their electrostatic interactions with the negatively charged aptamers, could be modulated for the quantification of these substrates. The potential applicability of this probing strategy in real biological environment has been assessed. Other than that, CD spectroscopic studies revealed the formation of supramolecular helical assembly of the platinum(II) complexes upon electrostatic interaction with heparin. Such helical conformation of the heparin-complex mixture together with the distribution of the negatively charged functionalities on the heparin have endowed the complex with high differentiating power for screening possible interfering analogues. Insulin has also been employed as a template for inducing the self-assembly of the platinum(II) complex. Changes in negative surface charge distribution on insulin, brought about by its conformational changes upon conversion to insulin amyloid under destabilizing conditions, have resulted in different extent of induced self-assembly of the metal complex. Spectral changes of the platinum(II) complex has provided a convenient monitoring of insulin amyloid formation, with kinetic parameters determined. A number of platinum(II) complexes with nucleobase-functionalized alkynyl ligands, [Pt(tpy)(C≡CCH2-T-1)]OTf, [Pt(tBu3tpy)(C≡CCH2T-1)]OTf, [Pt(tpy)(C≡C- CH2-A-9)]OTf, [Pt(tpy)(C≡CCH2-C-1)]OTf and [Pt(tpy)(C≡CCH2-G-9)]OTf (T = thymine; A = adenine; C = cytosine; and G = guanine), and amide-functionalized terpyridine ligands, [Pt{tpy-(CONHPh)2}(C≡CPh)]PF6 and [Pt{tpy-(CONHC6H13)

There are conventional methods for cancer treatment, but each has its limitations or drawbacks. These circumstances have led researchers to look for new cytotoxic agents which could be used for cancer treatment. Here, convenient one-pot synthesis of several photoluminescent rhenium(I) diimine complexes and their screening for anticancer properties are presented. The rhenium(I) complexes include fac-(CO)3(Bipy)ReCl (1), fac-(CO)3(Phen)ReCl (2), fac-(CO) 3(2,9-Me2Phen)ReCl (3), fac-(CO) 3(2,9-Me2-4,7-Ph2Phen)ReCl (4), (CO) 3(Quinox)Re(mu-OC5H11)2Re(CO) 3-(Quinox) (5), [(CO)3Re(mu-OC5H 11)2Re(CO)3]2(mu-Pyrazine)2 (6), [(CO)3Re(mu-OC5H11) 2Re(CO)3]2(mu-4,4'-Bipy)2 ( 7), and [(CO)3(2,9-Me2Phen)Re(mu-H)Re(2,9- Me2Phen)(CO)3]+[(CO)3Re (mu-OC 5H11)3Re(CO)3]- ( 8). The complexes have been characterized using spectroscopic techniques and the molecular structures of 3-8 have been confirmed through X-ray crystal structure determinations. As expected, these complexes exhibit fluorescence. The anticancer properties of 1-8 are evaluated using the human prostate cancer cell line (PC-3) and breast cancer cell line (MCF-7A). The results of this study demonstrate that these complexes have significant anticancer properties. For example, the complex 6 is highly effective against MCF-7A and the complex 1 is highly effective against PC-3. Therefore, these complexes can potentially find applications in the treatment of some cancers.-- Abstract.

Abstract: New classes of luminescent transition metal complexes, including the systems of rhenium(I) tricarbonyl diimine, cyclometalated iridium(III) diimine, cyclometalated rhodium(III) diimine, ruthenium(II) diimine and ruthenium(II) terpyridine complexes tethered with rhodamine moieties, have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure of one of the cyclometalated rhodium(III) diimine complexes with rhodamine pendants, [Rh(SPLC2N2)(ppy)2](PF6) has been determined. The molecular structure of [Rh(SPLC2N2)(ppy)2](PF6) showed a distorted octahedral geometry and the rhodamine moiety was found in a spirolactam closed-ring form. All of them were found to exhibit emission in fluid solution. The emissions of rhenium(I) tricarbonyl diimine and ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are derived from the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) excited state, i.e. from dπ orbital of the rhenium(I) or ruthenium(II) metal center to the π* orbital of the diimine ligand; while that of cyclometalated iridium(III) diimine complexes is (3MLCT) [dπ(Ir) → π*(N DEGREESN)] and that of cyclometalated rhodium(III) diimine complexes involves the (3IL) [π → π*(N DEGREESC)] excited state, probably mixed with (3MLCT) [dπ(Rh) → π*(N DEGREESC)] character. The cation-binding properties of these complexes toward alkali, alkaline-earth and transition-metal cations were investigated by electronic absorption and emission spectrophotometries. Some of them were found to exhibit new low-energy absorption and emission bands, characteristic of the rhodamine absorption and emission, with high selectivity and sensitivity for certain transition metal cations. A series of rhodamine-appended Schiff base organic compounds has also been synthesized in order to explore their capability as luminescent lanthanide ion sensors. The lanthanide ion binding properties of one of the compounds in acetonitrile were examined. Upon addition of lanthanide ions, new intense low-energy electronic absorption and emission bands were also observed, characteristic of the rhodamine absorption and emission, demonstrating its lanthanide ion sensing behaviour. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled SYNTHESIS AND PHOTOSENSITIZING PROPERTIES OF SUBLIMABLE RHENIUM DIIMINE COMPLEXES Submitted by Wong Hei Ling for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in January 2007 Two series of rhenium diimine complexes based on bis(phenylimino)acenaphthene-derived and benzothiazole-derived ligands were synthesized and their uses in fabricating highly efficient photovoltaic devices are presented. The electronic absorption bands, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of these rhenium complexes could be modified easily by changing the structure of ligands. These rhenium complexes were used as the photosensitizers in photovoltaic cells. A series of multilayer bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices with the device structure ITO/CuPc/Complex: C /C /Al (ITO = indium tin oxide coated glass, 60 60 and CuPc = copper phthalocyanine) based on different rhenium complex photosensitizers co-deposited with C in the active layer was fabricated. ITO 60 serves as the anode and Al as the cathode. CuPc and C were used as the hole and 60 electron transport materials, respectively. The complexes are thermally stable and can be processed by thermal evaporation under high vacuum. Multilayer thin films with very good optical quality and smooth surface morphology were prepared. The effects of varying the hole transport material, thickness of hole transport material, rhenium complex photosensitizer, mixed layer thickness, active layer composition, and light intensity to the performance of the photovoltaic cells were studied systematically. It was found that the short-circuit current (I ) and SC fill-factor (FF) could be significantly affected by varying the device configuration. However no significant change in the open-circuit voltage (V ) was observed., OC For the devices fabricated from rhenium diimine complexes based on bis(phenylimino)acenaphthene-derived ligands, it was found that the highest power conversion efficiency (η ) was achieved for the bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device ITO/CuPc(10 nm)/Complex: C [3:7](125 nm)/C (10 60 60 nm)/Al(60 nm), in which bis(phenylimino)acenaphthene rhenium tricarbonyl chloride was used as the photosensitizer. The highest I and η were measured to SC p be 5.97 mA/cm and 1.40 %, respectively under air mass (AM) 1.5 simulated solar light illumination (100mW/cm ). For the devices fabricated from rhenium diimine complexes based on benzothiazole-derived ligands, it was found that the optimized device structure was ITO/CuPc(10 nm)/Complex: C [4:6](150 60 nm)/C (10 nm)/Al(60 nm), in which 1-(2-benzothiazolyl)isoquinoline rhenium 60 tricarbonyl chloride was used as the photosensitizer. The highest I and η were SC p measured to be 5.71 mA/cm and 1.72 %, respectively. The role of these rhenium complexes in the photosensitization process was studied by measuring the incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE) at different wavelengths. The photocurrent response agreed well with the absorption spectra of the rhenium complexes, CuPc, and C . This suggests that all these compounds are playing important roles as the 60 photosensitizers in the photovoltaic cell and essential to the photovoltaic process.
