Book excerpt: The purpose of this synthesis is to bring together materials and information on the design and maintenance of low volume roads. A literature search has been obtained from HRIS, NTIS and the Engineering Index. Over 1,000 questionnaires were then sent to cities, counties and consultants in the northern tier of states and the Canadian provinces. Interviews were also held with representatives of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Duluth, Hennepin and St. Louis Counties regarding their low volume road design and rehabilitation procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design engineers in local, state, and federal transportation agencies. Pavement materials, construction, and maintenance engineers will also find it of interest. In addition, it will be of interest to local technology transfer centers and pavement research engineers. This synthesis describes the state of the practice for thin-surfaced pavement project selection and structural design. It does not establish preferential design criteria (e.g., mix design) nor does it systematically evaluate existing design methods. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the conditions in which thin-surfaced pavements are considered appropriate, what thin-surfaced pavement types are considered appropriate for given conditions, and the decision criteria used in their selection. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search, including foreign resources. Case studies and an extensive collection of survey data are presented.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many low-volume roadways in the county road system in the State of Minnesota consist of unpaved aggregate surfaces. It is the responsibility of the county engineer to make determinations regarding the design and maintenance of such roads and particularly for specific needs, such as weight restrictions. One method used by several counties in Minnesota is the construction of a bituminous-stabilized layer by adding several inches of new aggregate and stabilizing it with an engineered, water-based asphalt emulsion using mix-in-place methods. This report describes a design method providing highway engineers and their staffs with the technical backing needed for the designs selected. This report describes the design method for determining the required thickness of stabilized and unstabilized layers in this type of aggregate-surfaced road. This basic design method is based on the material properties and a correlation between layered-elastic analysis, dynamic cone penetrometer, and falling-weight deflectometer testing. The load rating analysis uses the Minnesota Department of Transportation methodology of estimating load rating on low-volume roads using falling weight deflectometer data. A software package is also presented which was developed as part of this project.

The report also includes general guidelines on the application of preservation treatments on high-volume roadways. The same project that produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R26-RR-1 also produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R26-RR-2: Guidelines for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways, which explores the state of the practice for preservation treatments on high- and low-volume asphalt and concrete roadways. The report also includes suggested guidelines on the application of preservation treatments on high-volume roadways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction contains the papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction (AM3P, Doha, Qatar, 16- 18 April 2018). There has been an increasing emphasis internationally in the design and construction of sustainable pavement systems. Advances in Materials and Pavement Prediction reflects this development highlighting various approaches to predict pavement performance. The contributions discuss links and interactions between material characterization methods, empirical predictions, mechanistic modeling, and statistically-sound calibration and validation methods. There is also emphasis on comparisons between modeling results and observed performance. The topics of the book include (but are not limited to): • Experimental laboratory material characterization • Field measurements and in situ material characterization • Constitutive modeling and simulation • Innovative pavement materials and interface systems • Non-destructive measurement techniques • Surface characterization, tire-surface interaction, pavement noise • Pavement rehabilitation • Case studies Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction will be of interest to academics and engineers involved in pavement engineering.
