Book excerpt: The first generation (Ru3) and the second generation (Ru6) dendrimers have been synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis absorption and NMR spectroscopy. The per formance of the first and second generations dendrimers as charge transfer photo sensitizers in nanocrytalline TiO2 based solar cells was investigated. Under the illumination of 100 mW/cm2, using a Solaronix Iodolyte MPN-100 electrolyte cons isting of 0.05 M I2 [iodine], 0.1 M LiI, and 0.5 M 4-tertbutyl pyridine in 3-met hoxypropionitrile. The best photovoltaic performance has been obtained by the Ru 3 film yielding a short circuit current of 4.17 mA/cm2 and an open circuit volta ge of 626 mV and a fill factor of 0.51, corresponding to an overall conversion e fficiency of 1.34% that is approximately the double of the conversion efficienci es of that of the reference compound Ru1 (0.54%) and of the second generation de ndrimer Ru6 (0.56%). The particular efficiency of the first generation dendrimer, Ru3, was attributed to the better light-harvesting properties when the Ru3 dye is doped on the nanocrysatlline TiO2 surface when compared to the reference com pound, Ru1. In addition to the synthesis of Ru3 and Ru6, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel ruthenium (II) complex (dye A).

The physical and electronic properties were studied and the compounds were used as a critical part of a dye-sensitized solar cell. The complexes, which are dyes or photosensitizers, are used as mediator to convert light to electric power. In this study, one of the bipyridine ligand of the synthesized complexes was a derivative of 2,3-diphenylpyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline, which was to serve as the light-harvesting unit of the complexes. The SS01-SS05 bear different substituents at the para-position of the phenyl ring such as –H, –OMe, –NEt2, –Me, and –Br. The data obtained from 1H NMR and ATR-IR spectroscopy were used to identify the structure of the compounds. In studying electronic structure, cyclic voltammetry was used altogether with absorption spectra to calculate HOMO and LUMO electronic levels. Upon the study of photovoltaic characteristic of the cell staining with SS01-SS05, it was illustrated that the overall conversion efficiency of SS01-SS05 were 2.60, 3.04, 2.60, 2.50, and 1.06%, respectively, which were lower than the efficiency (5.07%) obtained from the cell staining with standard N719. These were the results from the lower current density of the cells staining with SS01-SS05, possibly due to poorer electron injection from SS01-SS05 onto the TiO2 surface, when compared to the standard N719.

Book excerpt: A solar cell converts electro-magnetic energy into electricity and is based on semiconductor physics. The high cost of solar cells, caused by expensive solid-state semi-conductor material, has led to the development of alternative solar cells called dye sensitized solar cells. The dye sensitized solar cells are low cost solar cells which yield electric conversion efficiencies of 11.4% under air mass1.5 solar irradiation, using a ruthenium dye known as N3 dye. Many methods have been used for the synthesis of the ruthenium trichloride, employing hazardous chemicals and high temperatures. In this project ruthenium is to be recycled from ruthenium waste material as ruthenium trichloride using aqueous hydrochloric acid, for the synthesis of the N3 dye. Furthermore, the study will focus on the development of the simple synthetic method for the N3 dye. The hypothesis tested is that N3 dye can be produced from non-hazardous chemicals at room temperature from ruthenium trichloride and 4-picoline. Ruthenium trichloride in turn, can be prepared from ruthenium waste material.

Book excerpt: This book will describe Ruthenium complexes as chemotherapeutic agent specifically at tumor site. It has been the most challenging task in the area of cancer therapy. Nanoparticles are now emerging as the most effective alternative to traditional chemotherapeutic approach. Nanoparticles have been shown to be useful in this respect. However, in view of organ system complicacies, instead of using nanoparticles as a delivery tool, it will be more appropriate to synthesize a drug of nanoparticle size that can use blood transport mechanism to reach the tumor site and regress cancer. Due to less toxicity and effective bio-distribution, ruthenium (Ru) complexes are of much current interest. Additionally, lumiscent Ru-complexes can be synthesized in nanoparticle size and can be directly traced at tissue level. The book will contain the synthesis, characterization, and applications of various Ruthenium complexes as chemotherapeutic agents. The book will also cover the introduction to chemotherapy, classification of Ru- complexes with respect to their oxidation states and geometry, Ruthenium complexes of nano size: shape and binding- selectivity, binding of ruthenium complexes with DNA, DNA cleavage studies and cytotoxicity. The present book will be more beneficial to researchers, scientists and biomedical. Current book will empower specially to younger generation to create a new world of ruthenium chemistry in material science as well as in medicines. This book will be also beneficial to national/international research laboratories, and academia with interest in the area of coordination chemistry more especially to the Ruthenium compounds and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruthenium poly-pyridyl compounds, RuLH, RuLCOOH and RuLOMe have been synthesized and their photophysical properties have been studied. It was shown that the sub stitution of one bipyridine ligand of a ruthenium tris-bipyridine with a stilben oid-bipyridine ligand does not affect the HOMO energy levels of the ruthenium ce nter. However, this modification results in lowering the LUMO energy levels by 0 .2 eV which in turn leads to a red-shift in the absorption spectrum. Also, we r eport the synthesis and characterization of a novel ruthenium-based dye, TG6. Th is complex shows good absorption properties in comparison to the one of the most efficient sensitizer (N3 dye), which may allow us to present this dye as a prom ising sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cell systems.

Abstract: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have drawn much attention due to their higher versatility and lower production cost compared to inorganic photovoltaics. The top performers of DSSC have achieved power conversion efficiency over 10%, which is comparable to amorphous silicon solar cells. In this work, new photosensitizers and nanostructure for improving the photovoltaic performance of DSSC were developed and evaluated. Two series of cyclometalated ruthenium(II) complex photosensitizer were presented and their photosensitizing properties in DSSC were studied. Eight cyclometalated ruthenium(II) terpyridine complexes with three carboxylic acid groups on the terpyridine ligand were synthesized. Series A (M1 to M4) consist of C, N, N' ligands substituted with phenyl group whereas series B (M5 to M8) consist of C, N, N' ligands substituted with m-fluorophenyl group. All of the complexes exhibited broad aborption spectra covering the whole visible spectrum. The complexes in series B generally showed better photovoltaic performance than those in series A in the DSSCs. DSSC fabricated from M7 achieved the highest Voc, Jsc and power conversion efficiency among other DSSC, which were 0.56 V, 7.30 mAcm-2 and 2.63 % respectively. Truxene-core donor--acceptor dyes were presented and their photosensitizing properties in DSSC were studied. Eight dyes with either one donor two acceptors system (T2, B2, T2R and B2R) or two donor one acceptor system (T1, B1, T1R and B1R) were synthesized. Dyes with two acceptors have high molar extinction coefficients originated from the charge-transfer transition band, which are almost two times higher than those with only one accceptors. Both the enhanced absorption and better anchoring geometry on TiO2 contribute to the better photovoltaic performance of the two acceptors dyes in the DSSCs. Devices fabricated from B2 and volatile solvent electrolyte exhibited the best photovoltaic performance among the truxene-core dyes. The Voc, Jsc, FF and power conversion efficiency of the device were 0.59 V, 9.69 mAcm-2, 0.63 and 3.62 % respectively. Dyes based on cyanoacrylic acid anchoring groups (T1, T2, B1 and B2) were found to perform better than those based on rhodanine-3-acetic acid dyes (T1R, T2R, B1R and B2R) in both donor--acceptor configurations. ITO nanorod/TiO2 nanoparticle composite films with the three different types of ITO nanorod with different length (150 nm, 600 nm and 1.5 μm) were fabricated on FTO glass substrate. The transmittance and sheet resistance of the ITO nanorod array on the FTO glass substrate were found decreased with increasing the length of the ITO nanorod. When the ITO nanorod/TiO2 nanoparticle composite films were applied as the anode in DSSCs, the device fabricated from 600 nm ITO nanorod with TiO2 'double layer' film showed enhanced photocurrent generation. The improved photocurrent generation is suggested to be due to an improved charge collection efficiency at the ITO nanorod back electrode. Book excerpt: The photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties of a first and second gene ration dendrimer with ruthenium tris-bipyridine peripheral groups and a tri-viol ogen like core (Ru3V3 and Ru6V3) were investigated in solution and when embedded within assembled films, respectively. The stepwise assembly of these dendrimers on quartz and ITO surfaces utilizing the Layer-by-Layer approach was investigat ed. The amount of the assembled dendrimers was found to increase as we go to the higher generation dendrimer. This dendrimer generation effect was evident from the UV-Vis, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical measurements of the den drimers in either solution phase or when embedded in films. The anodic and catho dic photocurrent generation was seen upon visible light irradiation, with higher photocurrents for Ru6V3 than Ru3V3. This observation was attributed to better l ight-harvesting properties, thicker films and slower charge recombination proces s in Ru6V3 when compared to Ru3V3.
