The main PPP backbone was synthesized via palladium- catalyzed coupling of an arylbis(boronic ester) with an aryl dibromide. Imine bridges, formed by exposure of the polymer to trifluoroacetic acid, are used to forced the consecutive units into planarity. The bridging units are sup 2 hybridized thus allowing for greater pi-electron flow between the consecutive phenyl units by lowering the band gap between the hydroquinoidal and the quinoidal forms of the phenylene backbone. Upon planarization, bathochromic shifts of 210-240 nm occur for the n-dodecyl substituted polymer. The optical spectra of the planar systems are compared to that of the parent nonplanarized polymers, oligo(p-phenylenes), PPP and other near-planar PPP derivatives. When the bridges are n-dodecyl substituted, the fully planar structures can be made into flexible free standing films.

Book excerpt: Poly(p-phenylene) (PPP), a highly insoluble polymer that has been studied extensively for its possible electronic and photonic applications, has a 230 twist between the consecutive aryl units due to ortho hydrogen interactions. Attempts to enhance the solubility by substitution of the rings forces the consecutive aryl units even further out of plane resulting in a plummet of the extended conjugation (easily observed by the optical spectra). We recently described a route to soluble ladder PPP derivatives. Here we describe an improved synthetic route to the monomers as well as an aryl-substituted ladder PPP derivative. jg p.3.

The first approach, involving lactam bridges, was unsuccessful due to the insolubility of the 6(511)-phenanthridinonyl moieties. The second approach, which utilized imine bridges, worked excellently since the compounds were generally soluble and the bridge formations were highly efficient. The main PPP backbone was synthesized via Pd(O)-catalyzed coupling of an arylbis(boronic ester) with an aryldibromide. Imine bridges, that are formed by exposure of the polymer to trifluoroacetic acid or HCl, force the consecutive units into planarity. The bridging units are sp2 hybridized thus allowing for greater it-electron flow between the consecutive phenyl units. The polymers, upon planarization, exhibit enormous bathochromic shifts of 210-240 nm.

The petrol-range organics include hydrocarbons from C6 to C10, while diesel-range organics are C10-C28 hydrocarbons. Environmental pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons is one of the major global concerns, particularly in oil-yielding countries. In fact, there are more than five million potentially contaminated areas worldwide that represent, in general, a lost economic opportunity and a threat to the health and well-being of humans and the environment. Petroleum-contaminated sites constitute almost one-third of the total sites polluted with chemicals around the globe. The land contamination caused by industrialization was recognized as early as the 1960s, but less than a tenth of potentially contaminated lands have been remediated due to the nature of the contamination, cost, technical impracticability, and insufficient land legislation and enforcement. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy overcomes this problem by 6-11 orders of magnitude enhancement compared with the standard RS for molecules in the close vicinity of certain rough metal surfaces. Thus, SERS combines molecular fingerprint specificity with potential single-molecule sensitivity. Due to the recent development of new SERS-active substrates, labeling and derivatization chemistry as well as new instrumentations, SERS became a very promising tool for many varied applications, including bioanalytical studies and sensing. Both intrinsic and extrinsic SERS biosensing schemes have been employed to detect and identify small molecules, nucleic acids and proteins, and also for cellular and in vivo sensing.
