Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noble metal nanoparticles have been extensively studied for use in applications in a diverse range of fields such as optoelectronics, catalysis, sensing, medicine, etc. due to their unique properties that arise as a result of their dimensions. Metal nanoparticles of size less than 3 nm exhibit molecular properties, unlike larger nanoparticles. These molecular nanoparticles are excellent model systems to study the chemistry of nanomaterials at the molecular level as their molecular formulae, crystal structure, chemical composition, electronic structures etc. can be experimentally measured and theoretically calculated. In addition, knowledge of their thermodynamic stability and mechanisms of formation can be leveraged in developing green synthetic routes in order to produce safer products that widen the range of applications, and to develop safer processes that increase manufacturability and decrease waste. Even though nanoparticle research is more focused on the end product and their properties, rather than the process, we have taken a different route of dismantling the M4Ag44(p-MBA)30 nanoparticle synthesis and developing a green route with significantly improved efficiency and an 89% yield. The need of solvent, which contributed to 98% of the waste, was kept to a minimum by using a stoichiometric silver-thiolate polymer as a precursor to intimately mix the metal atoms and ligands, and by forming a paste using a small amount of liquid to promote mass transport. The process mass intensity (PMI), a green metric defined by material input over product output, was decreased by almost 18-fold compared to the solution-phase synthesis. Some toxic chemicals were also removed or replaced throughout the process. This method is very effective for thermodynamically favorable products, and should be useful for other systems too. Alloying of metal nanoparticles is advantageous to achieve new properties. For example, gold-silver bimetallic NPs can be more stable than silver NPs and have better optical properties than gold NPs. Here we have studied the alloying process in M4AuxAg44-x(p-MBA)30 alloy nanoparticles, where 0 = x = 12, and M is a countercation. Two methods were used to synthesize M4AuxAg44-x(p-MBA)30 alloy nanoparticles: (i) co-reduction of gold-thiolate and silver-thiolate with alkali borohydride, and (ii) galvanic-exchange reaction between gold-thiolate and M4Ag44(p-MBA)30 nanoparticles in order to substitute silver with gold. The major findings were: (i) the number of gold atoms incorporated in the alloy was always less than the gold input, (ii) only up to twelve gold atoms were incorporated, (iii) gold prefers to stay at the innermost core energetically in alloy nanoparticles, as shown by the x-ray crystal structure of M4Au12Ag32(p-MBA)30 alloy nanoparticles, (iv) gold atom distributions were generally Gaussian, and (v) addition of gold in silver nanoparticles to create alloys increases the stability against oxidation.

It deals with the Nanoparticles having a size of 1-100 nm in one dimension. It is often used in medical chemistry, atomic physics and other scientific disciplines. The synthesis of nanomaterials is of current interest due to their wide variety of applications in fields such as electronics, photonics, catalysis, medicine etc. The applications of nanotechnology are growing because matter at the nanometer scale has different properties compared with the bulk state. For this reason, many research groups around the world are testing new methods of synthesis of different materials at the nanoscale. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been the subject matter of researchers due to their unique properties (e.g. size and shape depending on optical, antimicrobial and electrical properties).

This book was released on 2014 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work reported in this dissertation describes the design and synthesis of different gold nanoshells with strong absorption coefficients at the near-infrared region (NIR) of the spectrum, and includes preliminary studies of their use for the photo-induced heating of pancreatic cancer cells and ex vivo tissues. As the emphasis was on gold nanoshells with maximum extinctions located at 800 nm, the methods explored for their synthesis led us to the preparation of silica-core and hollow gold nanoshells of improved stability, with maximum extinctions at or beyond the targeted within the near-infrared window. The synthesis of silica-core gold nanoshells was investigated first given its relevance as one of the pioneering methods to produce gold nanostructures with strong absorption and scattering coefficients in the visible and the near-infrared regions of the spectrum. By using a classical method of synthesis, we explored the aging of the precursor materials and the effect of using higher concentrations than the customary for the reduction of gold during the shell growth. We found that the aging for one week of the as-prepared or purified precursors, namely, the gold cluster suspensions, and the seeded silica particles, along with higher concentrations of gold in the plating solution, produced fully coated nanoshells of 120 nm in size with smooth surfaces and maximum extinctions around 800 nm. Additional work carried out to reduce the time and steps in the synthesis of silica-core gold nanoshells, led us to improve the seeding step by increasing the ionic strength of the cluster suspension, and also to explore the growth of gold on tin-seeded silica nanoparticles. The synthesis of hollow gold nanoshells (HGS) of with maximum extinctions at the NIR via the galvanic replacement of silver nanoparticles for gold in solution was explored next. A first method explored led us to obtain HGS with maximum extinctions between 650 and 800 nm and sizes between 30 and 80 nm from silver nanoparticles, which were grown by the addition of silver nitrate and a mild reducer. We developed a second method that led us to obtain HGS with maximum extinctions between 750 and 950 nm by adjusting the pH of the precursor solution of the silver particles without much effort or additional steps. The last part of this work consisted in demonstrating the photo-induced heating of two biological systems containing HGS. Photothermal therapy studies of immobilized PANC1 pancreas cancer cells in well-plates were carried out with functionalized HGS. We found that cells exposed to HGS remained viable after incubation. Moreover, the cells incubated with HGS modified with mercaptoundecanoic acid and folic acid turned non-viable after being irradiated with a laser at 800 nm. The other study consisted in the laser-induced heating between 750 and 1000 nm of ex vivo tissues of chicken and pork with nanoshells injected. In comparison with non-injected tissues, it was found that the temperature at the irradiated areas with HGS increased more than 10 °C. Moreover, the extent of the heated area was broader when the laser was used at wavelengths beyond 900 nm, suggesting that the heating was due to the radiation absorbed and transformed into heat primarily by the HGS and at a lesser extent by the water in the tissue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of top-down lithographic techniques with synthetic organic and inorganic technologies is a key challenge for the development of effective nanosca1e devices. In terms of assembly, nanoparticles provide an excellent tool for bridging the gap between the resolution of electron beam lithography (-60 nm) and the molecular level. Nanoparticles possess an array of unique properties associated with their core materials, including distinctive magnetic, photonic and electronic behavior. This behavior can be controlled and applied through monolayer functionalization and assembly strategies, making nanoparticles both scaffolds and building blocks for nanotechnology. The diverse structures and properties of nanoparticles makes them useful tools for both fundamental studies and pragmatic applications in a range of disciplines. This volume is intended to provide an integrated overview of the synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles, and their applications in chemistry, biology, and materials science. The first three chapters focus on the creation and intrinsic properties of nanoparticles, covering some of the myriad core materials and shapes that have been created. The remaining chapters of the book discuss the assembly of nanoparticles, and applications of both discrete particles and particle assemblies in a wide range of fields, including device and sensor fabrication, catalysis, biology, and nanosca1e electronic and magnetic systems.
