Book excerpt: This dissertation concerns the synthesis and properties of Fischer and N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of rhodium and iridium. Chapter two describes the synthesis of Fischer carbene complexes of iridium, derived from aminopyridines. The mechanism of formation, via a double C-H activation, is investigated. Stoichiometric C-C coupling reactions with alkenes, alkynes, and enones are described. In chapter three we explore the origin of anion-dependant selectivity in the formation of normal and abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of iridium. Chapter four describes the synthesis of an abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene ligand of intermediate electron-donating power. The effect of varying the electron-donating power of abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in alkyne hydrosilylation is examined. In Chapter five the synthesis of an isosteric series of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands with varying electron-donor properties, and their neutral and cationic iridium complexes is described. An unusual intramolecular C-H activation, which is at equilibrium at room temperature, is described. Chapter six describes the synthesis of iridium complexes with two monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene complexes. Complexes combining normal N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, and triazole-derived N-heterocyclic carbene ligands are described.

The first project deals with the archetypal Schrock carbene, and the second project studies complexes that contain metal-nitrogen bonds, both amides and imides. A summary of the research in this dissertation is discussed in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 begins the studies of the archetypal Schrock carbene, (BuCH2)3Ta=CHBu. The studies include the synthesis of deuterated compounds (BuCD2)3TaCl2 and Bu+CD2Li, observation and identification of the intermediate, Ta(CD2Bu+)5, and kinetic studies of the conversion of Ta(CD2Bu+)5 to (Bu+CD2)3Ta=CDBu+, giving the activation parameters and a kinetic isotope effect for the conversion. The work here confirms that the pentaneopentyltantalum is the precursor to the archetypal Schrock carbene. Chapter 3 studies the effects of isotopic substitution on NMR chemical shifts of complexes in Chapter 2. Conformations of (Bu+CD2)3TaCl2 and Ta(CD2Bu+)5 have also been investigated. Chapter 4 begins the study of compounds containing metal-nitrogen bonds. Guanidinate imides Ta(NMe2)(=NSiMe3)[RNC(NMe2)NR]2 (R = Cy, Pr1) have been prepared from the reactions of Ta(NMe2)4[N(SiMe3)2] with two equivalents of carbodiimides, RN=C=NR. The two guanidinate imides have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, the structure of Ta(NMe2)(=NSiMe3)[CyNC(NMe2)NCy]2 has been studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Under heating, Ta(NMe2)4[N(SiMe3)2] undergoes an unprecedented elimination of Me3Si-NMe2, converting the amide ligand -N(SiMe3)2 to the imide ligand =NSiMe3 to give an intermediate Ta(NMe2)3(=NSiMe3). In the presence of CyN=C=NCy, the carbodiimide captures the intermediate to give another intermediate, Ta(NMe2)2(=NSiMe3)[CyNC(NMe2)NCy]. Subsequent second carbodiimide insertion leads to the formation of the final product Ta(NMe2)(=NSiMe3)[CyNC(NMe2)NCy]2. The remaining amide ligand, -NMe2, in Ta(NMe2)(=NSiMe3)[CyNC(NMe2)NCy]2 and Ta(NMe2)(=NSiMe3)[Pr1NC(NMe2)NPr1]2 gives two separate resonances in the proton NMR spectrum at room temperature indicating inequivalence of the two methyl groups. The interconversion of the methyl groups in the former has been studied with variable-temperature NMR. Chapter 5 studies the synthesis and characterization of metal cage complexes [(Me2N)3MO]4 (M = Nb, Ta). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show a cubane-like structure with M-O bridges. Variable-temperature NMR of the inequivalent amide methyl groups -NMe[subscript a]Me[subscript b] has also been carried out to find the activation parameters for the exchange.

The world's expanding appetite for mass production of exotic chemicals necessitates the design and application of enhanced catalysts. To optimize catalytic materials, the detailed relationships between catalyst architecture and reactivity must be determined. Although for many ligand families these relationships are well understood, novel catalysts require in depth empirical investigation to determine these connections. The design of a novel di-N-heterocyclic carbene family of ligands in reported herein. These C2 symmetric ligands are based on the rigid 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene backbone and designed for utilization in chiral catalysis. Thorough investigation into the relationships between the ligand's structure and the architecture of the resulting rhodium and iridium catalysts directed the design of three generations of our novel ligand family. The first generation, trans-1,1'-[9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12- diyldimethanediyl]bis(benzylimidazole) bis(triflouromethansulfonate) [DEAM-BI](OTf)2 (2-1), is too flexible to enforce a rigid chiral pocket about a metal center under catalytic conditions. Book excerpt: Chemical oxidation by [FeCp2]PF6 afforded thermally unstable, paramagnetic Rh IV compounds, [Rh{ArNC(NR 2)NAr} 3]PF6, which were characterized by mass spectrometry and electronic absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, two FeII complexes of tetradentate tripodal ligands, [Fe(L1)(OTf) 2] and [Fe(L2)(OTf) 2]; where L1 = N, N-bis(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)-N-(2-pyridylmethyl) amine and L2 = N, N-bis[(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)methyl]-N-[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl] amine; were synthesized and characterized. The 1 H NMR spectra for [Fe(L1)(NCMe) 2](OTf) 2 and [Fe(L2)(NCMe) 2](OTf) 2 in CD3 CN solution at ambient temperature exhibit paramagnetically shifted peaks typical of high-spin FeII complexes, while variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy showed that the Fe center in [Fe(L1)(NCMe) 2](OTf) 2 is in a spin equilibrium and that in [Fe(L2)(NCMe) 2](OTf) 2 in the high-spin state (at 25° C). Highly reactive oxoiron(IV) complexes were obtained by reaction of the FeII complexes with an excess of m-CPBA at -40° C.
