Book excerpt: Fluorescent compounds with special photophysical properties, such as near-infrared (NIR) luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), can be applied as bioimaging probes, security inks and chemical sensors. However, due to the inefficient quantum yield or brightness, applications of the developed NIR or CPL emitters in real life have rarely been discussed. In order to overcome these issues, this dissertation describes four chapters regarding the synthesis, characterization and photophysical property studies of a series of new organic and organometallic compounds. In chapter I, a novel mechanism for lanthanide sensitization will be discussed using a pyrene excimer generating ligand. In chapter II, lanthanide-based organometallic complexes with high circularly polarized luminescence brightness enabled by a chiral H8-Binol ligand will be mentioned. In chapter III, circularly polarized luminescence of the first molecular copper-based organometallic complexes incorporating a chiral carbene ligand will be shown. In chapter IV, the synthesis and photophysical property studies of a series of rhodamine derivatives will be included.

Book excerpt: Molecular luminescent materials have been widely studied and used in different applications, including optoelectronics, sensors, and bioimaging. The photophysical properties of these materials are controlled by several factors, such as their aggregation behaviors, molecular electronic structures, and modes of assembly. Molecular interactions, either intra- or intermolecular, play a significant role in regulating these factors. Therefore, understanding these interactions, which are unique to each material system, improves our ability to rationally design molecular luminescent materials with desired electronic and optical properties. In this dissertation, we explore the effects of molecular interactions on the photophysical properties, such as emission colors and photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs), for two different classes of materials: cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes and organic metal halide hybrids. Cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes adopt a square-planar geometry that favors their assembly through Pt-Pt interactions. These complexes are known to display very distinguished photophysical properties depending on the level of interactions between the Pt centers. They can either exhibit emissions from the high energy ligand centered/metal-to-ligand charge transfer (LC/MLCT) state or the lower energy metal-to-metal-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) state. In binuclear Pt(II) complexes, the Pt centers are bridged by an appropriate bridging ligand (e.g., pyrazole) which dictates their molecular geometries. Chapter 2 and 3 of this dissertation discuss binuclear Pt(II) complexes with H-frame and A-frame geometries, respectively. In Chapter 2, the synthesis and characterization of a series of binuclear 2,4-difluorophenylpyridine Pt(II) complexes bridged by thiazol-2-thiolate ligands with different bulkiness are reported. The three complexes adopt H-frame geometries or half-lantern structures with short Pt-Pt distances ranging from 2.916 to 2.945 Å, favoring their intramolecular Pt-Pt interactions. All these complexes are found to exhibit strong and stable 3MMLCT emissions in the orange/red region, with PLQEs reaching near-unity. Chapter 3 covers another series of binuclear Pt(II) complexes that have no intramolecular Pt-Pt interactions due to their A-frame geometries and long Pt-Pt distances. These complexes are bridged by pyrazole and have different cyclometallating ligands (N,N-dimethyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)aniline and 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)pyridine). The complex with N,N-dimethyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)aniline as its cyclometallating ligand exhibit a positive solvatochromic behavior introduced by the electron-donating dimethylamino group. This behavior is studied in several solvents with different polarities and evaluated using the Lippert-Mataga correlation and the empirical solvent polarity parameter ET(30). The positive solvatochromism recorded for this complex is assigned to the intramolecular charge transfer character of its emission. In addition to binuclear Pt(II) complexes, mononuclear cationic Pt(II) complexes are studied in Chapter 4. Intermolecular Pt-Pt interactions can exist between these complexes, which are regulated in a series of four mononuclear cationic Pt(II) complexes by modifying their counter-anions and molecular structures. These complexes exhibit strong 3MMLCT emissions in solid state with colors ranging from green to deep red. The structural and photophysical characterizations of these complexes reveal a clear correlation between their stacking modes and photophysical properties. The second class of materials studied in this dissertation is the ionically bonded organic metal halide hybrids. The remarkable structure diversity of this class of materials, originating from the infinite combinations of organic cations and metal halides, unlocks many new properties of both components. In Chapter 5, the synthesis and characterization of a series of benzoquinolinium (BZQ+) metal halides with a unique two-dimensional (2D) structure are reported. The structures are composed of layers of face-sharing metal halides (Pb2X5-, X= Cl, Br) separated and balanced by cationic BZQ+ arrays. The BZQ+ cations are found to be responsible for the emission of these hybrid materials, as revealed by their optical characterizations and theoretical calculations. The inorganic layers in the 2D structure scaffold the organic cations and provide a more rigid architecture due to stronger molecular interactions, enhancing the PLQEs and stability of the BZQ+ cations in the 2D metal halide hybrids compared to the pristine BZQ halides. In addition to the scaffolding effect, the composition of metal halide also affects the photophysical properties of BZQ+ cations. Replacing Cl by the heavy atom Br results in room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from cationic BZQ+ due to heavy atom effects.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF LUMINESCENT PLATINUM(II) AND GOLD(III) COMPLEXES WITH TRIDENTATE PINCER-TYPE LIGANDS - FROM COMPUTATIONAL STUDY TO EXPERIMENTS AND APPLICATION STUDIES Submitted by LAM Suk Hang for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in June 2015 Square planar platinum(II) and gold(III) complexes possess unique spectroscopic and photophysical properties which enable them as promising candidates for many applications such as optoelectronic devices and biological sensors. The understanding of the intrinsic properties of these complexes is therefore essential to optimize their performance as well as provide guidance on the molecular design for specific applications. This thesis aims to provide useful insights for the molecular design strategies with the aid of computational studies to tune the electronic properties of these complexes and electroluminescence studies in the fabrication of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Computational studies have been performed to inspect electronic structures and photophysical properties as well as their correlation with the nature of ancillary ligands in the platinum(II) complexes of 1,3-bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2′-yl)benzene, [Pt(bzimb)(C≡C-R)], 1,3-bis-hetero-azolylbenzenes, [Pt(N DEGREESC DEGREESN)(C≡C-R)], and pyridine-based N-heterocyclic carbene, [Pt(NHC)(C≡C-R)] . It was found that the emission of the arylalkynylplatinum(II) complexes with pyridine-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligand was originated from the triplet alkynyl-to-tridentate pincer ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited state mixed with platinum-to-tridentate pincer metal-to-ligand charge transfer character, and the excited state energy was found to be red-shifted according to the increasing π electron-donating ability of the aryl group attached to the alkynyl ligand. On the other hand, the emission energies of the platinum(II) complexes of 1,3-bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2′-yl)benzene and 1,3-bis-hetero-azolylbenzenes were found to be dependent on the different electron-donating substituents on the pincer ligands. Calculations have also been performed on the representative alkynylplatinum(II) + + complexes [Pt(trpy)(C≡C-R)] (trpy = 2,2′ 6′,2′′-terpyridine), [Pt(bzimpy)(C≡C-R)] (bzimpy = 2,6-bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2′-yl)pyridine) and [Pt(bzimb)(C≡C-R)] as well as alkynylgold(III) complexes [Au(C DEGREESN DEGREESC)(C≡C-R)] (C DEGREESN DEGREESC = 2,6-diphenylpyridine), [Au{C(Np) DEGREESN DEGREESC(Np)}(C≡C-R)] (C(Np) DEGREESN DEGREESC(Np) = 2,6-di(2-naphthyl)pyridine) and [Au(N DEGREESN DEGREESN)(C≡C-R)] (N DEGREESN DEGREESN = 2,6-bis(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) in order to have a better understanding on their nature of the emissive origins as well as the radiative and nonradiative processes. In particular, factors governing the ordering of the triplet excited states and radiative decay rate constants of the emissive state ( ES) have been examined. Their potential energy profiles for the deactivation process from the ES via triplet metal-centered states have also been explored. The X-ray crystal structure of [Pt(trpy){C≡CC H -N(CH CH OCH )-4}](OTf) has been 6 4 2 2 3 2 determined. The lowest energy absorption of the complexes except [Pt(trpy)(C≡CB15C5)](OTf) were tentatively assigned to originate from a π(C≡C) → π*(trpy) ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) transition mixed with some metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) contribution. The ion-binding and pH dependent properties have also been studied. Their photophysical and spectroscopic properties were shown to be dependent on pH and selected metal ions, and their colorimetric and luminescence chemosensing properties were described. Another series of platinum(II) terpyridyl alkynyl complexes, t - [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-R)]X [R = -C H -NH -4, X = OTf; R = -C H -NCS-4, X = 3 6 4 2 6 4 - - - OTf; R =-C H -NHCOCH I-4, X = OTf; R = -UH-5 (UH = Uracil), X = Cl; 6 4 2 -UMe-5, X = OTf (UMe = 1,3-dimethyluracil)] have been successfully synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structures of t t [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-C H-NCS-4)](OTf), [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-UH-5)]Cl and 3 6 4 3 [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-UMe-5)](OTf) have been determined. Their photophysical and electrochemical behaviour, together with their protein labeling and DNA binding studies, have also been studied. The emission of the complexes in solution at room temperature has been tentatively assigned as originated from a dπ(Pt) → π*( Bu trpy) triplet MLCT excited state. The 77 K butyronitrile glass displayed dual luminescence which were assigned to originate from an intraligand (IL) phosphorescence of the terpyridine ligand and a dπ(Pt) → t 3 t π*( Bu trpy) MLCT phosphorescence. The [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C- 3 3 C H-NHCSNH-4)](OTf)-HSA and [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-C H -NHCOCH S- 6 4 3 6 4 2 4)](OTf)-HSA (HSA = human serum albumin) bioconjugates were highly colored and exhibited luminescence in the visible region upon photoexcitation. A series of ruthenium(II) diimine complexes and an osmium(II) diimine complex containing extended π-conjugated ligands, [Ru(bpy) (pmra)](PF ) 2 6 2 [pmra = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-2-fluorenamine], [Ru(bpy) (pmra)]Cl, 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmaa)]Cl [pmaa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-2-anthramine], 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmpa)]Cl [pmpa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-1-pyrenamine], 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmfa)]Cl [pmfa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-3-fluoranthenamine] 2 2 and [Os(bpy) (pmaa)](PF ), have been synthesized. Three distinct and unusual photophysical properties were found in the 2,5-bis(arylethynyl)- rhodacyclopentadienes: (i) long {u2013}lived singlet excited states, from which some of them exhibit high-intensity fluorescence with nanosecond lifetimes; (ii) slow intersystem crossing rates (k values 108 s-1) compared to typical luminescent organometallic complexes ( with k values 1012 s-1); and (iii) no phosphorescence was observed even at 77 k in a rigid glass. Many photophysical experiments such as e.g. low-temperature lifetime measurements, singlet oxygen sensitization and time-resolved infrared (TRIR) have been carried out in order to investigate further and explain the unusual photophysical properties of this class of organometallic complexes. The first example of isomeric biphenyl-rhodacyclopentadiene by-product formation was found in the synthesis of acac-rhodacyclopentadienes. The isomeric biphenylrhodacyclopentadiene by-product with R = CO2ME was isolated and its molecular structure was confirmed by x-ray analysis. Its emission spectrum shows two emission bands with max values of 394 and 544 nm in degassed toluene solution. The fluorescent emission at 394 nm has a quantum yield of 0.03, whereas the phosphorescent emission at 544 nm has a quantum yield of 0.05. The unusual long lifetime (237.6us) of the phosphorescence at room temperature indicates that the transition is from a ligandcentred (LC) * transition. In addition, the synthesis of 1,4-bis(p-R-phenyl) buta-1,3-diynes and novel 1,12-bis(p-R-phenyl)dodaca-1,3,9,11-tetraynes, which serve as the starting materials for the synthesis of the rhodacyclopentadienes, are also reported. Four novel 1,12-bis(p-R-phenyl)dodaca-1,3,9,11-tetraynes (where R = H, SMe, CO2Me and BMes2) have been synthesized and characterised.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon luminescence rigidochromism has been reported since the 1970s in tricarbonyldiimine complexes with a general formula [R(CO)3LX] using conventional unipolar diimine ligands such as 2,2;-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline as L, and halogens or simple solvents as X. As a major part of this dissertation, microwave-assisted synthesis, purification, characterization and detailed photoluminescence studies of the complex fac-[ReCl(CO)3L], 1, where L = 4-[4,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]-N,N-diethylbenzenamine are reported. The employment of microwaves in the preparation of 1 decreased the reaction time from 48 to 2 hours compared to the conventional reflux method. Stoichiometry variations allows for selective preparation of either a mononuclear, 1, or binuclear, fac-[Re2Cl2(CO)6], 2, complex. The photophysical properties of 1 were analyzed finding that it possesses significant luminescence rigidochromism. The steady state photoluminescence emission spectra of 1 in solution shift from 550 nm in frozen media to 610 nm when the matrix becomes fluid. Moreover, a very sensitive emission spectral analysis of 0.1 K temperatures steps shows a smooth transition through the glass transition temperature of the solvent host. Furthermore, synthetic modifications to L have attained a family of ambipolar compounds that have tunable photophysical, thermophysical and other material properties that render them promising candidates for potential applications in organic electronics and/or sensors - either as is or for their future complexes with various transition metals and lanthanides.
