Book excerpt: Abstract: Thin films and mesostructured materials were fabricated by a process in which the synthesis is directed by molecularly self-assembled surfactant templates. The formation of Langmuir monolayers and Langmui-Blodgett (LB) films with insoluble lipid amphiphiles (DPPC), reactive surfactants (OTS), and biomolecules (collagen) were studied. The monolayer and LB film characteristics were investigated for combinations of the above materials. The motivation for including collagen in the products was to explore the effects of a biomolecule and the possible preparation of materials with a more complex hierarchical structure. The precursor sol presented in this research is an advance in long-term stability for this type of material. Unlike prior attempts reported in the literature to create suitable precursors, this sol is chemically stable on a time scale of years. The condensation polymerization proceeds to form silicate oligomers of a relatively low molecular weight, but the chemical nature of the sol prevents the reaction from proceeding to the point at which phase separation occurs. The silicate polymerization proceeded spontaneously with the introduction of water to complete the mesoporous silica films studied. The application of the precursor sol to a liquid/liquid interface proved to be a novel approach to obtaining structured mesoporous films that are not affected or templated by a substrate. Addition of collagen molecules in the reaction results in the formation of only cubic structures, even if the reaction conditions would normally create lamellar or hexagonal structures. Mesoporous particles were obtained from surfactant templates in the reaction mixture. The addition of collagen proved to be an effective processing agent for the produced materials. The analysis of mesoporous silica particles with molybdenum showed limited catalytic activity with regard to propane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH). The particles maintained high surface area and pore structure, but displayed low conversion rates of propane. The formation of mixed oxide catalyst supports, using the same method for preparing mesoporous silica particles, proved to have much better potential. The SiO2-TiO2 mixed oxides with molybdenum had higher surface areas, stronger molybdenum-oxygen bonds, and a strong increase in the reduction temperature compared with research using a modified sol-gel/co-precipitation technique.

Book excerpt: The Special Issue “Synthesis and Modification of Nanostructured Thin Films” highlights the recent progress in thin film synthesis/modification and characterization. New methods are reviewed for the synthesis and/or modification of thin films based on laser, magnetron, chemical, and other techniques. The obtained thin nanostructures are characterized by complex and complementary techniques. We think that most of proposed methods can be directly applied in production, but some others still need further elaboration for long-term prospective applications in lasers, optics, materials, electronics, informatics, telecommunications, biology, medicine, and probably many other domains. The Guest Editor and the MDPI staff are therefore pleased to offer this Special Issue to interested readers, including graduate and PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers, but also to the entire community interested in the field of nanomaterials. We share the conviction that this can serve as a useful tool for updating the literature, but also to aid in the conception of new production and/or research programs. There is plenty of room for further dedicated R&D advances based on new instruments and materials under development.

Book excerpt: Self-assembly provides a route to make mesoporous structures that have accessible internal surface area. These types of materials show promise for use in opto-electronic devices as well as for energy storage devices. In this work we synthesize a range of mesoporous thin films from molecular and nanocrystal precursors. We characterize these films' porous structure and surface area using ellipsometric-porosimetry. This work is divided into three parts; the first section focuses on synthesizing and characterizing mesoporous semiconducting films. Two approaches are utilized, one in which germanium Zintl clusters co-assemble with a charged surfactant via electrostatic attractions to produce an ordered organic/inorganic composite that can later be converted into a porous network by surfactant removal. The other method uses pre-formed cadmiun selenide nanocrystals that coassemble with diblock copolymer micelles to produce a porous film with large accessible surface areas. Both of these nanostructured semiconductors are electrically interconnected, making them suitable for a range of applications. In the second part of this work we focus on studying the pore structure of four different porous metal-oxide films. Mn3O4: FeMn2O3, ITO, and ITO coated with V2O5. All of these systems use nanocrystal/diblock copolymer assembly methods described above to produce a 3-D porous network with large accessible surface areas. Mn3O4, FeMn2O3 are redox active materials that were synthesized for their redox capacities. ITO nanocrystals coated with V2O5 are also redox active due to the vanadia coating. In all 3 systems the porous architectures exhibit high surface areas, providing ample redox active sites, and an interconnected open porosity, facilitating solvent/ion diffusion to those sites. In the case of ITO coated with vanadia we investigated the effect of vanadia coating thickness on surface accessibility. In the final section we examine ways to measure surface area of thin films using ellipsometric-porosimetry combined with two different solvents: isopentane and methanol. We studied the advantages and disadvantages of each solvent in determining the surface area of the film.

Book excerpt: The fabrication of advanced electronic devices that operate on quantum effects requires the patterning of semiconductors on the scale of 50 A, which cannot be achieved by any of the currently available patterning technologies. This project pursued a novel approach: the fabrication of a self-assembling template which would allow the deposition of ordered arrays of germanium dots on silicon substrates, on length scales permitting the operation of quantum devices at room temperature. The template is the mesoporous silicate MCM-41, discovered by researchers at Mobil Chemical Corp. This material consists of highly ordered, two-dimensional, hexagonal arrays of very uniform pores in silicon dioxide, with diameters tunable from 20 A to over 100 A. If pore arrays of this material can be grown as thin films on silicon substrates, with the pores oriented normal to the substrate surface, the resulting structure will provide a template for the deposition of germanium dots. Germanium can then be deposited through the pores in the film and onto the silicon substrates by chemical or physical vapor deposition. The template film can then be etched away, leaving a hexagonally ordered array of germanium dots on the silicon substrate. Mesoporous silica films were grown on oxidized silicon substrates by acidic synthesis. The substrates were first patterned by optical lithography to produce vertical features with dimensions of the order of microns. The substrates were then coated with hydrophobic polymer monolayers to alter their surface energy. This monolayer was selectively removed from the horizontal surfaces of some of the substrates, leaving it only on the vertical surfaces of the patterned features. It was thought that the difference in surface energy between horizontal and vertical surfaces would induce the pores to align along the vertical surfaces.
