Book excerpt: Electrical properties of epoxy modified samples were measured by using a home- made 2 x 2 point probe. Measurements of electrical resistivity, levitation height, and critical current as a function of temperature in both pure and epoxy- modified YBaCuO (123) superconductors were conducted. Presence of epoxy resin did not affect the Tc and the Meissner effect but reduced the current carrying capacity of the samples. Above Tc, the epoxy transformed 123 into a semiconductor.

Book excerpt: By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.

Book excerpt: A series of compounds Ba1minus/x/K(subscript x)BiO3 have been prepared and characterized over the range of compositions ranging from x = 0.3 to 0.5. A neutron powder diffraction analysis has been carried out for the composition x = 0.4 at room temperature and at 10 K. Examination of the superconducting properties as a function of x indicates superconductivity occurs over a narrow range of compositions close to x = 0.4, with T/sub c/ of 29 K. Specific heat measurements indicate conventional electron-phonon interactions may play a role in promoting superconductivity in Ba/sub .6/K/sub .4/BiO3. Magnetization loops and examination of the time dependent magnetization indicate that Ba/sub .6/K/sub .4/BiO3 has a low value of J/sub c/ due to very weak pinning. 18 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of these materials necessitates a close collaboration between physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides, which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir radiation effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparation of labeled superconducting yttrium barium copper oxides from the labeled metal nitrates is described. The materials were characterized by a variety of physical techniques, and their superconducting properties were measured. Trends are seen in the structural parameters of the materials obtained by the nitrate route and also in isotopically enriched materials prepared via gas-phase exchange. These structural changes are accompanied by changes in superconducting properties. The 18O-enriched yttrium barium copper oxide prepared via the nitrate route has a T/sub c/depressed by 33°K to 59°K, whereas a 17O sample has a T/sub c/ between the 18O material and similarly prepared 16O sample. 15 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: Intended as a textbook for courses involving preparative solid-state chemistry, this book offers clear and detailed descriptions on how to prepare a selection of inorganic materials that exhibit important optical, magnetic and electrical properties, on a laboratory scale. The text covers a wide range of preparative methods and can be read as separate, independent chapters or as a unified coherent body of work. Discussions of various chemical systems reveal how the properties of a material can often be influenced by modifications to the preparative procedure, and vice versa. References to mineralogy are made throughout the book since knowledge of naturally occurring inorganic substances is helpful in devising many of the syntheses and in characterizing the product materials. A set of questions at the end of each chapter helps to connect theory with practice, and an accompanying solutions manual is available to instructors. This book is also of appeal to postgraduate students, post-doctoral researchers and those working in industry requiring knowledge of solid-state synthesis.
