The X-ray crystal structure of [Pt(trpy){C≡CC H -N(CH CH OCH )-4}](OTf) has been 6 4 2 2 3 2 determined. The lowest energy absorption of the complexes except [Pt(trpy)(C≡CB15C5)](OTf) were tentatively assigned to originate from a π(C≡C) → π*(trpy) ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) transition mixed with some metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) contribution. The ion-binding and pH dependent properties have also been studied. Their photophysical and spectroscopic properties were shown to be dependent on pH and selected metal ions, and their colorimetric and luminescence chemosensing properties were described. Another series of platinum(II) terpyridyl alkynyl complexes, t - [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-R)]X [R = -C H -NH -4, X = OTf; R = -C H -NCS-4, X = 3 6 4 2 6 4 - - - OTf; R =-C H -NHCOCH I-4, X = OTf; R = -UH-5 (UH = Uracil), X = Cl; 6 4 2 -UMe-5, X = OTf (UMe = 1,3-dimethyluracil)] have been successfully synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structures of t t [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-C H-NCS-4)](OTf), [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-UH-5)]Cl and 3 6 4 3 [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-UMe-5)](OTf) have been determined. Their photophysical and electrochemical behaviour, together with their protein labeling and DNA binding studies, have also been studied. The emission of the complexes in solution at room temperature has been tentatively assigned as originated from a dπ(Pt) → π*( Bu trpy) triplet MLCT excited state. The 77 K butyronitrile glass displayed dual luminescence which were assigned to originate from an intraligand (IL) phosphorescence of the terpyridine ligand and a dπ(Pt) → t 3 t π*( Bu trpy) MLCT phosphorescence. The [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C- 3 3 C H-NHCSNH-4)](OTf)-HSA and [Pt( Bu trpy)(C≡C-C H -NHCOCH S- 6 4 3 6 4 2 4)](OTf)-HSA (HSA = human serum albumin) bioconjugates were highly colored and exhibited luminescence in the visible region upon photoexcitation. A series of ruthenium(II) diimine complexes and an osmium(II) diimine complex containing extended π-conjugated ligands, [Ru(bpy) (pmra)](PF ) 2 6 2 [pmra = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-2-fluorenamine], [Ru(bpy) (pmra)]Cl, 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmaa)]Cl [pmaa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-2-anthramine], 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmpa)]Cl [pmpa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-1-pyrenamine], 2 2 [Ru(bpy) (pmfa)]Cl [pmfa = N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-3-fluoranthenamine] 2 2 and [Os(bpy) (pmaa)](PF ), have been synthesized. Of particular interest are compounds with ligands with peripheral base sites, where the metal-to-ligand charge transfer shifts electron density onto the ligand yielding an emissive state of increased in basicity. One well known example of such complexes, (bis(2,2'-bipyridine) (2-3-bis(2-pyridyl) pyrazine) ruthenium(II), [Ru(bpy)2dpp] 2+, has been studied extensively, yet questions remained regarding the sequence of protonation steps at the two peripheral dpp nitrogens in the ground and excited states and the magnitude of the photo-induced change in acid-base properties at each site. In order to reach a deeper understanding of the kinetic and thermodynamic steps involved in its protonation and coordination, a similar complex was synthesized and studied, (bis(2,2'-bipyridine) (2-(2-pyridyl) pyrazine) ruthenium(II), [(bpy)2Ru(pypz)]2+. The alternative ligand is identical in almost every respect to dpp except for the absence of the free pyridyl ring and the fact that it has only one possible protonation site instead of two. The pypz ligand, thus, represents an ideal candidate to elucidate how the pyrazinyl nitrogen on the coordinated dpp would behave if the additional pyridyl ring on dpp was not present. The differences and similarities in the properties of [(bpy)2Ru(pypz)]2+ and [Ru(bpy)2dpp]2+ in the same environment are highlighted here, describing the peculiar behavior of the acid-base sites of each complex upon excitation and their role in protonation reactions and coordination reactions to d10 metals, namely zinc.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled RUTHENIUM-CARBON BONDING INTERACTION: SYNTHESIS AND SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES OF RUTHENIUM-ACETYLIDE, -CARBENE, -VINYLIDENE AND -ALLENYLIDENE COMPLEXES Submitted by Wong Chun Yuen for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in June 2004 The metal-carbon bonding interactions in acetylide, carbene, vinylidene and allenylidene complexes of ruthenium were investigated using spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational methods. The complexes trans-[Cl(16-TMC)Ru=C=CHR] (16-TMC = 1, 5, 9, 13-tetramethyl-1, 5, 9, 13-tetraazacyclohexadecane, R = aryl and alkyl) and trans-[ClL M=C=C=CAr ] (L = 4 2 4 16-TMC, M = Ru; L = (dppm), M = Ru, Os; dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) 4 2 were synthesized. Comparison of the redox couples of [Cl(L )M=C=C=CAr ] revealed 4 2 that the electrochemical reactions occur at the delocalized M=C=C=CR unit. The weak + 2 3 -1 absorption of [Cl(16-TMC)Ru=C=CHR] at λ 400-650 nm (ε trans-[Cl(NH ) Ru=C=C=CPh ] show that the highest-occupied molecular orbital 3 4 2 (HOMO) is not localized on the metal or allenylidene ligand. Resonance Raman measurements on trans-[Cl(16-TMC)Ru=C=C=CPh ] suggest the existence of bonding interaction between the metal and C=C=C unit in the electronic excited state. The complexes [(tpy)(bpy)RuC≡CR] (tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, bpy = 2+ 2,2'-bipyridine, R = aryl and alkyl) and [(tpy)(bpy)Ru=C(OMe)(CH R)] were prepared. Their electrochemical and spectroscopic data were compared with those of n+ + related [(tpy)(bpy)RuL] derivatives. The emission of [(tpy)(bpy)RuC≡CR] (λ = max 2+ 748-786 nm in CH CN solution, 298 K) and [(tpy)(bpy)Ru=C(OMe)(CH R)] (λ = 3 2 max II 597-615 nm in glassy n-butyronitrile, 77 K) are ascribed to d (Ru ) → π*(polypyridyl) MLCT excited states. The carbene derivative 2+ [(tpy)(bpy)Ru=C(OMe)(CH C H OMe)] undergoes photochemical reaction in 2 6 4 2+ CH CN to give [(tpy)(bpy)RuN≡CCH ] and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. 3 3 The complexes trans-[Ru(16-TMC){(C≡C-1,4-C H ) C≡CPh} ] (n = 1, 2), 6 4 n-1 2 trans-[Ru(dmpe) {(C≡C-1,4-C H ) C≡CPh}] (n = 1, 2, 3, dmpe = 2 6 4 n-1 2 bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) and related derivatives trans-[M(dmpe) (C≡CAr) ] (M 2 2 = Ru, Fe) were synthesized. Cyclic voltammetric studies on these complexes show that the effect of acetylide chain length on the M(III/II) couple is subtle. Time-Dependent-Density-Functional-Theory (TD-DFT) calculations on the model complexes trans-[Ru(PH ) (C≡CPh)], [Ru(PH ) (C≡CC H NO ) ], 3 4 2 3 4 6 4 2 2 [Ru(NH ) (C≡CPh)] and [Ru(NH ) (C≡CPh) ] indicate that the lowest-energy 3 4 2 3 4 2 transition in trans-[Ru(dmpe) (C≡CAr)] is more appropriately described as 2 2 metal-perturbed intraligand charge-transfer in nature, whereas those in trans-[Ru(16-TMC)(C≡CAr) ] and trans-[Ru(16-TMC)(C≡CAr) ] are assigned as 2 2 MLCT and LMCT respectively.
