Book excerpt: Cyclophanes, Volume II, provides a comprehensive review of the field of cyclophane chemistry for the period between the earlier volume in this series (Bridged Aromatic Compounds by A. H. Smith, 1964) and the present (generally through 1981). An attempt has been made to provide a selection of topics that delineate the past and present of cyclophane chemistry and point toward some of its future directions. The ordering of chapters has been chosen to present background, theory, structure, and spectroscopy followed by a somewhat arbitrary division of cyclophanes into subgroups, roughly in order of increasing structural complexity. Key topics discussed include the synthesis and properties of heterophanes, condensed benzenoid and nonbenzenoid cyclophanes, multibridged and multilayered cyclophanes, cyclophanes in host-guest chemistry, and cyclophanes as synthetic analogs of enzymes and receptors. Individual chapters have been written so that they may be read with little or no direct reference to other chapters. Each stands alone as a review of a particular area of cyclophane chemistry and therefore some overlap between chapters will be apparent.

Book excerpt: The first generation of molecular rectangles, based on a tetracarbonylrhenium(I)thiolate dimer, was a proof-of-concept design, and served as the basis for a synthetic strategy to more useful molecular rectangles. The second generation of rectangles, based on a bifunctional chelating ligand, 2,2'-bipyrimidine, and rigid dipyridyl ligands (e.g., 4,4'-bipyridine) with tricarbonylrhenium(I) corners, gave a rectangular framework of ∼6 x 12 A. These molecules displayed solution-based affinity for an anionic aromatic species, as monitored by 1H NMR. The synthesis and characterization of hexametallic systems based on the bipyrimidine edge are also described.

Clearly structured and covering the entire range, the book introduces readers to the most recent research in the field. Twenty chapters, written by well-known scientists, cover in particular: - synthesis of carbo- and heterocyclic cyclophanes and metallocenophanes, - structural and spectroscopic properties of cyclophanes, - current and future applications in synthesis and material science, - novel reactions of cyclophanes, - use of cyclophanes as building blocks in supramolecular chemistry for this fascinating class of compounds. Thus, this is not only an extremely valuable source of information for synthetic organic chemists, but also a ready reference for scientists working in related fields of arene chemistry, stereoselective synthesis, material science, and bioorganic chemistry.

Book excerpt: The fundamentals of "supramolecular chemistry" to the latest developments on the subject are covered by this book. It sets out to explain the topic in a relatively easy way. The basic concepts of molecular recognition chemistry are included. Molecules with fascinating shapes and functions such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, dendrimers, rotaxane, and catenane, and molecular assemblies are also explained. Thereafter applications of supermolecules to nanotechnology are introduced with many examples of molecular devices. The last part of the book describes biological supermolecules and their mimics. Though simply explained undergraduate and graduate students in Chemistry will be able to use aspects of this work as an advanced textbook.

Book excerpt: Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis is a comprehensive reference that not only synthesizes the current literature but also offers practical protocols that industrial and academic scientists can immediately put to use in their daily work. Increasing interest in green chemistry has led to the development of numerous environmentally-friendly methodologies for the synthesis of organic molecules of interest. Amongst the green methodologies drawing attention, mechanochemistry is emerging as a promising method to circumvent the use of toxic solvents and reagents as well as to increase energy efficiency. The development of synthetic strategies that require less, or the minimal, amount of energy to carry out a specific reaction with optimum productivity is of vital importance for large-scale industrial production. Experimental procedures at room temperature are the mildest reaction conditions (essentially required for many temperature-sensitive organic substrates as a key step in multi-step sequence reactions) and are the core of mechanochemical organic synthesis. This green synthetic method is now emerging in a very progressive manner and until now, there is no book that reviews the recent developments in this area. Features cutting-edge research in the field of mechanochemical organic synthesis for more sustainable reactions Integrates advances in green chemistry research into industrial applications and process development Focuses on designing techniques in organic synthesis directed toward mild reaction conditions Includes global coverage of mechanochemical synthetic protocols for the generation of organic compounds
