Book excerpt: The emergence of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals has generated great fundamental and technical interest in recent years. The size dependent emission property for Cadmium Selenide quantum dots renders it indispensable in the field of nanocrystal-based emitters used in electronic and bioelectronic devices. Investigation of these semiconductor quantum dots reveals the evolution of the electronic structure from an extended solid state to the molecular limit, an extremely important issue of basic and applied research in condensed matter physics. The work presented in this book mainly deals with the synthesis and characterization of chemically synthesized CdSe nanoparticles. A detailed investigation of the optical, structural and morphological properties of CdSe QDs and their correlation with both core and surface has been carried out. The theoretical aspect of quantum confinement and stability of CdSe quantum dots with organic and inorganic layers, are correlated to understand the surface modification aspects. Finally CdSe-polymer nanocomposites were discussed for their potential application in biomarkers and photo-electronic devices.

Book excerpt: Ternary Quantum Dots: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications reviews the latest advances in ternary (I-III-VI) chalcopyrite quantum dots (QDs), along with their synthesis, properties and applications. Sections address the fundamental key concepts of ternary quantum dots, progress in synthesis strategies (i.e., organic and aqueous synthesis), and characterization methods (i.e., transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, etc.). Properties of ternary quantum dots are comprehensively reviewed, including optical, chemical and physical properties. The factors and mechanisms of the cytotoxicity of ternary quantum dot-based nanomaterials are also described. Since ternary chalcopyrite quantum dots are less toxic and more environmentally benign than conventional binary II-VI chalcogenide quantum dots, they are being investigated to replace conventional quantum dots in a range of applications. Thus, this book reviews QDs in various applications, such as solar cells, photocatalytic, sensors and bio-applications. - Reviews fundamental concepts of ternary quantum dots and quantum dot-nanocomposites including the most relevant synthesis strategies, key properties, and characterization techniques - Delves into the cytotoxicity of quantum dots looking at the factors and mechanisms that influence cytotoxicity including demonstration of cytotoxicity assays for in vitro and in vivo tests - Touches on the many applications of ternary quantum dots including biomedical applications, applications in solar cells, sensing applications, and photocatalytic applications

Book excerpt: In this thesis, cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized and characterized for patterning applications as well as for photovoltaic devices. The QDs were patterned and embedded into various polymers to form fluorescent composites. Their photophysical properties were investigated in detail. Through template assisted deposition the QDs-polymer composites were patterned into fluorescent nanorods. CdSe QDs were combined with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a synthesized organic perylene derivative dye (N,N'-di(ethanethiol)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl diimide) (ETPTCDI) as a link between QDs and CNTs. Upon testing, the QDs-ETPTCDI-CNTs nanocomposite displayed photoactive properties. Photophysical quenching studies of QD-ETPTCDI-CNTs provided better understanding of the electron-hole transfer of each component in the nanocomposite. The nanocomposite material was patterned onto microelectrode devices for photocurrent measurements under an AM1.5 solar simulated light source. These nanocomposites can be used as photovoltaic devices. The preliminary characterization studies of the device show excellent photoresponse under AM1.5 solar simulated light. The band gap alignment of each component of the nanocomposite and the charge transfer kinetics are the key to efficient electron-hole transfer. Optimization of the semiconducting material's interface can potentially make these nanocomposites a system for photovoltaic-based devices.

Book excerpt: Quantum dots are nano-sized particles of semiconducting material, typically chalcogenides or phosphides of metals found across groups II to VI of the periodic table. Their small size causes them to exhibit unique optical and electrical properties which are now finding applications in electronics, optics and in the biological sciences. Synthesis of these materials began in the late 1980’s and this book gives a thorough background to the topic, referencing these early discoveries. Any rapidly-expanding field will contain vast amounts of publications, and this book presents a complete overview of the field, bringing together the most relevant and seminal aspects literature in an informed and succinct manner. The author has been an active participant in the field since its infancy in the mid 1990’s, and presents a unique handbook to the synthesis and application of this unique class of materials. Drawing on both his own experience and referencing the primary literature, Mark Green has prepared. Postgraduates and experienced researchers will benefit from the comprehensive nature of the book, as will manufacturers of quantum dots and those wishing to apply them.

The interesting and unique coupling and energy transfer processes between the “artificial atoms” could substantially extend the range of possible applications of quantum nanostructures. This book reviews recent advances in the exciting and rapidly growing field of QDMs via contributions from some of the most prominent researchers in this scientific community. The book explores many interesting topics such as the epitaxial growth of QDMs, spectroscopic characterization, and QDM transistors, and bridges between the fundamental physics of novel materials and device applications for future information technology. Both theoretical and experimental approaches are considered. Quantum Dot Molecules can be recommended for electrical engineering and materials science department courses on the science and design of advanced and future electronic and optoelectronic devices.
