Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconducting polymers are of great interest for applications in electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This volume provides a thorough introduction to the basic concepts of the photophysics of semiconducting polymers as well as a description of the principal polymerization methods for luminescent polymers. Divided into two main sections, the book first introduces the advances made in polymer synthesis and then goes on to focus on the photophysics aspects, also exploring how new advances in the area of controlled syntheses of semiconducting polymers are applied. An understanding of the photophysics process in this kind of material requires some knowledge of many different terms in this field, so a chapter on the basic concepts is included. The process that occurs in semiconducting polymers spans time scales that are unimaginably fast, sometimes less than a picosecond. To appreciate this extraordinary scale, it is necessary to learn a range of vocabularies and concepts that stretch from the basic concepts of photophysics to modern applications, such as electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This book provides a starting point for a broadly based understanding of photophysics concepts applied in understanding semiconducting polymers, incorporating critical ideas from across the scientific spectrum.

Book excerpt: Depending on the current density , conductivity of PEDOT -P AMPS free standing composite films reached about 90 Slcm. Spectroelectrochemistry of neutralized PEDOT -P AMPS composite films showed a maximum absorption at 2.0 eV (615 nm), and a band gap of 1.65 eV, as calculated from the onset of the 7t-7t* transition (Figure 4). Thin PEDOT-PAMPS composite filffis were found to switch rapidly between oxidized and reduced states in less than 0.4 seconds with an initial optica1 contrast of 76 %. A cauliflower morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Despite the high molecular weight of the polyelectrolyte, the film density was found to be similar to classical PEDOT (i.e. CG. 1.4 g/cm3), while a surface roughness averaged below 5%. As expected with the use of a sulfonated polyelectrolyte as dopant, cation exchange properties were observed with hexaammineruthenium (111) chloride. PProDOP coatings exhibit a surface resistivity of 16 k.Q/O at 60 % and 58 k.Q/O at 99.9 % relative luminance (measured by colorimetry). Many factors were found to impact the formation of the films, including pH, temperature, nature of the dopant ion, and nature of the oxidizing agent. The best combination of dopant ion/oxidant was obtained for anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid (AQSA) / copper chloride that yielded the most conductive films (cr = 10 S cm-ı). A doping level ofabout 25-30 % was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for PEDOP and PProDOP films. Scanning electron miscroscopy (SEM) and profilometry indicate homogenous film deposition with total surface coverage attained in films as thin as 40- 70 nm with a compact and smooth morphology .Spectroelectrochemistry of chemically prepared ( oxidized) and subsequently electrochemically reduced PProDOP films showed the disappearance of the n-n* transition, evident as two maxima at 485 nm and 518 nm upon electrochemical doping .The band gap, measured as the onset of the n-n* transition was 2.2 e V .Since the oxidation potential of EDOP is relatively low ( +0.6 V VS. Ag/ Ag +), it was possible to obtain cbnducting films of PEDOP using air as the oxidizing agent for the polymerization. This result is of particular importance since very few conducting polymers can be obtained such an environmentally friendly process.

Book excerpt: The copolymerization has been studied as a new strategy to synthesize polymer materials by combining interesting properties of the respective homopolymers. In this dissertation, the work focused on the electrosynthesis and characterization of conducting copolymer films based on pyrrole and thiophene derivatives. A variety of electrochemical, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance and photoelectrochemical spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, solid state NMR and Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy supported the formation of true copolymers of pyrrole with bithiophene and 3-methylthiophene with ethyl-3-thiophene acetate. The analytical results exhibited that random copolymers were produced rather than block copolymers. The electronic and structural characteristics of the copolymer films were intermediate between those of the respective homopolymers and they were dependent on the copolymer composition. In particular, the semiconducting parameters of the copolymer films of pyrrole and bithiophene such as flat band potential, band gap energy and charge carrier density shifted from those of polypyrrole to polybithiophene with increasing bithiophene content of the copolymer films. Such parameters were controlled precisely by alternating either the monomer ratio or the polymerization potential. In addition, the morphological and electronic properties of the functionalized polymers of ethyl-3-thiophene acetate were increased significantly by copolymerization with 3-methylthiophene. The obtained conducting copolymer films were able to be applied in the field of sensoric.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In traditional electronics, inorganic materials such as silicon and germanium are used as semiconductors due to their outstanding semiconducting properties. Unfortunately, inorganic materials are rigid due to their high crystalline nature, and processing these materials is complex and expensive. Furthermore, traditional semiconducting materials do not have favorable mechanical properties in applications such as wearable devices and large-area applications with complicated shapes. Conjugated conducting polymers (CCPs) are being explored as alternative materials to conventional semiconductors due to their mechanical properties and high conductivity. CCPs offer properties such as solution and low-temperature processability, flexibility, thermal and optical properties that traditional semiconductors could not provide. These characteristics are essential in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs), and Photovoltaic (PVs) devices. This dissertation focuses on synthesizing rhodamine- and diketopyrrolopyrrole- containing CCPs. Chapter I focuses on the synthesis, and characterization of polyrhodamine (PRho), a semiconducting conjugated polymer containing the rhodamine core in the polymer’s backbone. PRho was synthesized by the Buchwald-Hartwig polycondensation and characterized for its optical and electrochemical properties. We have discovered that the polymer is electrochemically reversible and stable up to 1000 cycles as recorded by cyclic voltammetry between -0.4 and 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl and stable to extreme acidic and basic conditions without noticeable degradation. Remarkably, the polymer has a conductivity in the semiconductor range of 8.38 x 10−2 S cm−1 when treated with 20% HCl. Chapter II focuses on the synthesis and characterization of four different alkenyl flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) polymers ( PDPPVTV, PDPPVTT, PDPPV3T, and PDPPV4T) synthesized via Stille polycondensation. Different pi-conjugated segments (alkenyl/ PDPPVTV, thiophene/ PDPPVTT, thienothiophene/ PDPPV3T, and dithienothiophene/ PDPPV4T) were used to tune the optoelectrical properties of the polymers. The effect of the alkenyl groups and different pi-conjugated segments on the optoelectrical and charge mobility properties were determined by UV/visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and FET characteristics. Three of the four polymers, except PPP4T, showed good solubility in chloroform. All the polymers showed high thermal stabilities in TGA and semi-crystalline nature in X-Ray diffraction patterns. PDPPVTV and PDPPVTT exhibited hole mobilities of 1.8 x 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 0.25 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. .

Book excerpt: Electroactive polymers show great promise in a variety of applications, from chemical sensors to energy storage. Their properties such as solubility and band gap can be tailored through the strategic addition of substituents to the monomer. Extended conjugation monomers, which feature a central ring between electroactive moieties, were synthesized via different palladium catalyzed coupling reactions such as Negishi and Stille couplings. These monomers along with thiophene-based non-extended conjugation monomers were then polymerized chemically and electrochemically. Due to the color change these polymers exhibit during different redox states, spectroelectrochemistry was conducted to determine their band gap. Analysis of these compounds elucidated the impact different substituents had on the resulting polymers.
