Book excerpt: Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) are a special class of materials that possess both the properties of optical transparency and electrical conductivity. They find use in various applications such as flat panel displays, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, touch screens, smart windows, etc. Some of the most well-known and widely used TCOs are ZnO doped with Al, In2O3 doped with Sn, and SnO2 doped with F. All these TCOs are n-type in nature and show n-type conductivity. On the contrary, p-type TCOs are not very common, and due to their inherent low mobility, it is very challenging to synthesize highly conductive p-type TCOs. This has, in turn, stunted the growth of transparent electronics, which requires both n-type and p-type TCOs with good conductivity. The pursuit of viable p-type TCO has led to a group of materials called as delafossites. Delafossites have the general chemical formula CuMO2, where Cu is a positive monovalent cation (Cu+), M is a trivalent cation (3+ metals like Ga, Al, Fe, In, etc.), and oxygen is a negative divalent anion (O2−). CuGaO2 has grown in popularity as one of the most researched p-type delafossites as the demand for novel p-type TCO has grown. This dissertation focuses on the deposition, synthesis, optimization, and post-deposition processing of CuGaO2 p-type TCO thin films deposited using the sputtering technique. The films were deposited using single or dual-target sputtering using either stoichiometrically mixed targets of Cu2O and Ga2O3 or by using Ga2O3 and Cu targets. The films displayed favorable tunable attributes and diverse film compositions with varying deposition parameters and post-deposition treatments. By varying the annealing ambiance, films containing CuGa2O4, a secondary phase of CuGaO2, were also synthesized and studied. The etch feasibility of any thin film is of prime importance for its use in any practical application. The etch feasibility of CuGaO2 films in various acids was also studied and reported in this dissertation.

Book excerpt: The general emphasis of this work has been synthesis, characterization, and applications of n- and p-type inorganic oxide thin films that are deposited from solutions. In particular, a study of n-type transparent semiconductor films of tin (IV) oxide and zinc-doped tin (IV) oxide has been performed by spin coating. Solution deposition of antimony-doped to tin (IV) oxide films was also examined for the production of a conductor. The solution deposition of p-type cuprous oxide thin films has been achieved by spin coating an aqueous precursor of copper (II) formate tetrahydrate (aq) and annealing under nitrogen atmosphere. UV curing has also been used to prepare the films. The solution deposition of silver films is performed with the aim of obtaining a conductive contact for a TFT device. Silver metal films were deposited from solutions of Ag2O(s) in aqueous ammonia by spin coating method and annealing in air at temperatures as low as 120°C.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper based delafossite transparent semiconducting oxide thin films have recently gained tremendous interest in the field of optoelectronic technology, after the discovery of p-type conductivity in a transparent thin film of copper aluminium oxide (CuAlO2). Most of the well-known and widely used transparent conducting oxide thin films such as ZnO, SnO2, ITO etc. and their doped versions are n-type material, but corresponding p-type transparent conducting oxides were surprisingly missing for a long time until the fabrication of above-mentioned p-CuAlO2 thin film have been published (Nature 1997, 389, 939). This has opened up a new field in opto-electronics device technology, the so-called "Transparent Electronics", where a combination of the two types of transparent conducting oxides in the form of a p-n junction could lead to a 'functional' window, which transmits visible portion of solar radiation yet generates electricity by the absorption of UV part of it. Non-stoichiometric and doped versions of various new types of p-type transparent conducting oxides with improved optical and electrical properties have been synthesised in the last few years in this direction. Wide range of deposition techniques have been adopted to prepare the films. But fabrication of device quality films by cost-effective deposition techniques such as sputtering, chemical vapour deposition, wet-chemical dip-coating technique etc. are the need of the hour for large-scale production of these films for diverse device applications. Here the authors have discussed the fabrication and opto-electrical characterisation of p-CuAlO2+x thin films by cost-effective and scalable deposition routes such as sputtering and wet-chemical dip-coating technique. The authors have also discussed briefly some of the new developments in the field of p-type transparent conducting oxide thin film technology and an up-to-date and comprehensive description of different Cu-based p-type transparent conducting oxide thin films is presented. Also the origin of p-type conductivity in these transparent oxides has been dealt with considerable attention. Fabrication of all-transparent junctions is also discussed which is most important in the development of 'Transparent Electronics'. Field emission properties of thin films are currently of much interest due to the potential application in field emission displays (FEDs), which are considered to be strong candidate for low-power panel applications. The low-threshold field emission properties of wide-bandgap CuAlO2 thin films have been investigated for its potential applications in FED technology. The films showed considerable low turn-on field. This finding might open up a new direction in the field-emission technology, and a new group of materials (such as, different transparent conducting oxides) might become a promising candidate for low-threshold field emitter. Also, recently, the research on nanostructured materials generates great interest in the scientific community and offers tremendous opportunities in the field of science and technology. Here, the authors have also discussed in brief, the formation of nanocrystalline p-CuAlO2 films, which may open up an extremely important and interesting field of research for the fabrication of all-transparent nano-active devices. This will not only give a new dimension in the field of 'Transparent Electronics', but new avenues may open up in the nanoparticle research keeping an eye on its tremendous applications in optoelectronics technology.

Book excerpt: Transparent conducting materials are key elements in a wide variety of current technologies including flat panel displays, photovoltaics, organic, low-e windows and electrochromics. The needs for new and improved materials is pressing, because the existing materials do not have the performance levels to meet the ever- increasing demand, and because some of the current materials used may not be viable in the future. In addition, the field of transparent conductors has gone through dramatic changes in the last 5-7 years with new materials being identified, new applications and new people in the field. “Handbook of Transparent Conductors” presents transparent conductors in a historical perspective, provides current applications as well as insights into the future of the devices. It is a comprehensive reference, and represents the most current resource on the subject.

Book excerpt: Transparent conducting thin films of metal oxides, doped metal oxides, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have been produced using various deposition techniques, including: Aerosol Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition (AACVD), Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (APCVD), and Spray Coating. The resultant thin films were tested for their performance in a number of applications, including: Low emissivity ('Low-E') glazing, photovoltaic electrode materials, gas sensing and photocatalysis. AACVD was shown as a viable, and attractive, deposition technique for the synthesis of tin oxide, and doped tin oxide thin films, which allows for controllable doping levels, crystallinity, and surface structure. The tailoring of these physical attributes allows for enhanced performance of the functional properties of the films, whereby, a lower growth temperature produced highly transparent, highly conductive coatings with a low haze value for 'Low-E' applications, whereas, higher growth temperatures produced the high electrical conductivity, transparency, and light scattering properties required for high performance electrodes in thin film photovoltaics. In addition, a dual coating methodology was developed using both AACVD, and APCVD, to grow tin oxide thin films in a rapid timescale, but with modified surface structures showing changes to the short range waviness, kurtosis, and the surface area. Growth of carbon nanotubes, using CVD, was investigated over a range of metal catalysts, with varying Pauling electronegativity values, and over a range of temperature, methane, and hydrogen conditions. A growth mechanism has been postulated, whereby, the electronegativity of the metal catalyst, and the solubility and diffusion of the carbon through that catalyst, affects the type and properties of the carbon structure produced. To the authors knowledge, this is the first reported growth of MWCNTs using a chromium solo-metal catalyst, and the first reported growth of the unique 'carbon nanofibres' which were produced using gold and silver metal catalysts. Functionalisation of SWCNTs using a microwave reflux process was shown to yield sulphonate and sulphone modified nanotubes, which are highly soluble in water and able to undergo spray coating to produce carbon nanotube, nanonet transparent conducting thin films. The functionalisation process was shown to be reversible upon heating of the modified nanotubes. AACVD has been deemed unable to produced doped zinc oxide transparent conducting films. However, undoped zinc oxide films were produced. They displayed a high photocatalytic action in the degredation of stearic acid, and a UV light induced superhydrophilicity. The modification and deposition techniques, established throughout this work, were utilised to form transparent, hybrid, metal oxide-CNT coatings, for gas sensing. The hybrid materials displayed enhanced response times to combustible target gases, which has been attributed to the catalytic effects of the exposed carbon nanotube surfaces; and to the spillover of adsorbed oxygen from the active nanotubes to the metal oxide surface.

Book excerpt: In this work, we investigate the realization of p-type CuInOx thin films by RF magnetron sputtering using Cu2O: In2O3 target and study the effects of (i) post-deposition annealing and (ii) substrate heating during a deposition for controlling the optoelectronic and morphological properties. In the first part of the study, post-process annealing of the deposited films was performed at temperatures ranging from 100-900°C in O2 ambiance. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis performed on the samples identified the presence of Cu2In2O5 phases along with CuInO2 or In2O3 for the films annealed above 500°C. A morphological study performed using SEM shows the crystallization and the grain growth with an increase in the annealing temperatures. Optical studies carried out on the films indicated a small bandgap change in the range of 3.4-3.6 eV during annealing.

Book excerpt: This is the first text to cover all aspects of solution processed functional oxide thin-films. Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) comprises all solution based thin- film deposition techniques, which involve chemical reactions of precursors during the formation of the oxide films, i. e. sol-gel type routes, metallo-organic decomposition routes, hybrid routes, etc. While the development of sol-gel type processes for optical coatings on glass by silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide dates from the mid-20th century, the first CSD derived electronic oxide thin films, such as lead zirconate titanate, were prepared in the 1980’s. Since then CSD has emerged as a highly flexible and cost-effective technique for the fabrication of a very wide variety of functional oxide thin films. Application areas include, for example, integrated dielectric capacitors, ferroelectric random access memories, pyroelectric infrared detectors, piezoelectric micro-electromechanical systems, antireflective coatings, optical filters, conducting-, transparent conducting-, and superconducting layers, luminescent coatings, gas sensors, thin film solid-oxide fuel cells, and photoelectrocatalytic solar cells. In the appendix detailed “cooking recipes” for selected material systems are offered.

Book excerpt: The challenge for producing “invisible” electronic circuitry and opto-electronic devices is that the transistor materials must be transparent to visible light yet have good carrier mobilities. This requires a special class of materials having “contra-indicated properties” because from the band structure point of view, the combination of transparency and conductivity is contradictory. Structured to strike a balance between introductory and advanced topics, this monograph juxtaposes fundamental science and technology / application issues, and essential materials characteristics versus device architecture and practical applications. The first section is devoted to fundamental materials compositions and their properties, including transparent conducting oxides, transparent oxide semiconductors, p-type wide-band-gap semiconductors, and single-wall carbon nanotubes. The second section deals with transparent electronic devices including thin-film transistors, photovoltaic cells, integrated electronic circuits, displays, sensors, solar cells, and electro-optic devices. Describing scientific fundamentals and recent breakthroughs such as the first “invisible” transistor, Transparent Electronics: From Synthesis to Applications brings together world renowned experts from both academia, national laboratories, and industry.

Book excerpt: "Polyaniline (PAni), an inherently conducting polymer, was synthesized with different intrinsic oxidation states from emeraldine salt (ES) and emeraldine base (EB) to leucoemeraldine base (LM). Free-standing membranes and thin film bi-layers of metal-polyaniline were fabricated by magnetron sputter deposition of aluminum, copper, titanium and iron onto the polyaniline films. Metal-polyaniline samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the microstructures of specimens. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the chemical bonding and interactions between depsoited metals and polyaniline at the interfaces. Acoustic transmission properties of metal-polyaniline membranes were characterized by measuring the insertion loss as a function of acoustic frequencies and membrane geometry in various testing environments. Results indicated that the type of metal and the intrinsic oxidation state of the polyaniline influenced the structures and chemistry of the metal-polyaniline interfaces and membranes"--Abstract, leaf iii.
