Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovery of mesoporous materials by Mobil researchers in 1992 opened a new field in catalytic applications. The materials designated as M41S family are MCM-41 with one-dimensional hexagonal structure, MCM-48 with three-dimensional cubic structure and MCM-51 with unstable lamellar structure. This family of materials have high surface areas up to 1500 m2/g, narrow pore size distributions with pore sizes varying from 20 to 100 Å. These materials can be activated by incorporation of metals or active compounds into their structures. In this study, copper and nickel incorporated MCM-41 type catalytic materials were synthesized via different methods namely, impregnation, high temperature and low temperature direct synthesis methods. The Cu-MCM-41, and Ni-MCM-41, as well as synthesized MCM-41 were characterized by using XRD, TEM, N2 sorption, SEM, XRF, EDS, AAS and TPR. MCM-41 was synthesized with high temperature direct synthesis method. High surface area values up to 1400 m2/g of MCM-41 mesoporous materials were obtained with high pore volumes up to 1.17 cc/g. Cu-MCM-41 type catalytic materials were synthesized with three different methods. Impregnation and high temperature direct synthesis methods gave better results than those of low temperature direct synthesis method. In impregnation, relatively high surface area values (730 m2/g) were obtained with Cu/Si mole ratio as high as 0.3 in the product. For the case of high temperature direct synthesis products, Cu/Si mole ratios as high as 0.26 were obtained with somewhat smaller surface areas (400 m2/g). Low temperature direct synthesis method is the least favorable method in metal loading. Ni-MCM-41 type of catalytic materials were synthesized by impregnation and high temperature direct syntheses methods. Ni incorporation by high temperature direct synthesis method gave high surface area values (560-930 m2/g) having Ni/Si mole ratios of 0.12-0.28.

Book excerpt: The first symposium on Access in Nanoporous Materials was held in Lansing, Michigan on June 7-9, 1995. The five years that have passed since that initial meeting have brought remarkable advances in all aspects of this growing family of materials. In particular, impressive progress has been achieved in the area of novel self-assembled mesoporous materials, their synthesis, characterization and applications. The supramolecular self-assembly of various inorganic and organic species into ordered mesostructures became a powerful method for synthesis of mesoporous molecular sieves of tailored framework composition, pore structure, pore size and desired surface functionality for advanced applications in such areas as separation, adsorption, catalysis, environmental cleanup and nanotechnology. In addition to mesostructured metal oxide molecular sieves prepared through supramolecular assembly pathways, clays, carbon molecular sieves, porous polymers, sol-gel and imprinted materials, as well as self-assembled organic and other zeolite-like materials, have captured the attention of materials researchers around the globe. The contents of the current volume present a sampling of more than 150 oral and poster papers delivered at the Symposium on Access in Nanoporous Materials II held in Banff, Alberta on May 25-30, 2000. About 70% of the papers are devoted to the synthesis of siliceous mesoporous molecular sieves, their modification, characterization and applications, which represent the current research trend in nanoporous materials. The remaining contributions provide some indications on the future developments in the area of non-siliceous molecular sieves and related materials. This book reflects the current trends and advances in this area, which will certainly attract the attention of materials chemists in the 21st century.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique properties of bifunctionalized MCM-41 prove it to be a valuable tool in the catalytic field. The primary functional group (i.e. acid/base, metal center) enables the reaction to proceed as the typical homogeneous reaction would; however, the secondary group places restrictions upon the catalytic reaction. The secondary group acts as a gatekeeper, only allowing the appropriate reactants to diffuse into the material's mesopores. In this work, hydrophobic pentafluorophenyl groups are co-condensed as secondary groups onto the inner surface of the pores. These secondary groups increase the hydrophobicity of the mesopores. By utilizing an aqueous solvent, then, one can control which reactants diffuse into the pores to interact with the catalyst. Herein, a Sharpless-type reaction between an organic azide and a terminal acetylene is effectively catalyzed using a copper/pentafluorophenyl MCM-41 material. The reaction's success depends upon the solvent employed-water versus benzene; therefore, the reaction is an example of how one can manipulate a catalytic reaction's yield by varying the reactant/solvent properties. Another reaction scheme is described where a molecule containing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic tails can be forced into a certain conformation by the hydrophobic MCM -41 in an aqueous solution to produce a syn elimination to a cis olefin. This method allows one to control the regiochemistry of the catalytic reaction. Numerous other types of reactions, including stereospecific reactions, could also be catalyzed using this same idea if modified to correspond with the appropriate characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selective catalysis is a field that has been under intense investigation for the last 100 years. The most widely used method involves catalysts with stereochemical selectivity. In this type of catalysis, the catalyst controls which reactants will be transformed into the desired product. The secret to employing this type of catalysis, though, is to design the proper catalyst, which can be difficult. One may spend as much time developing the catalyst as spent separating the various products achieved. Another method of selective catalysis is now being explored. The method involves utilizing a multifunctional mesoporous silica catalyst with a gate-keeping capability. Properly functionalized mesoporous materials with well-defined pore morphology and surface properties can provide an ideal three-dimensional environment for anchoring various homogeneous catalysts. These materials can circumvent the multi-sited two-dimensional nature most heterogeneous systems have without adversely impacting the reactant diffusivity. These single-site nanostructured catalysts with ordered geometrical structure are advantageous in achieving high selectivity and reactivity. Mesoporous materials can be prepared to include pores lined homogeneously with tethered catalysts via co-condensation. Additionally, these materials can be reacted with another (RO)3SiZ̃ group by using the traditional grafting method; this group is anchored predominantly at the entrances to the pores rather than inside the pores. Thus, if these Z̃ groups are chosen properly, they can select certain molecules to enter the pores and be converted to products (Scheme 1). In such multifunctional catalysts, the selectivity depends on the discrimination of the gatekeeper. Gate-keeping MCM-41 materials are at the forefront of catalytic substances.
