Book excerpt: The synthesis of CdSe quantum dots was carried out using a variety of methods including co-precipitation method, reverse micellar method, and hot injection method. Of these three methods, only the hot injection method produced an immediately viable product for application in the hybrid light emitting diode proposed. The co-precipitation method did generate the ability to perform the reverse micellar method which produced ~30 nm diameter nanorods of mostly amorphous material. These rods were analyzed using XRD, and TEM. The hot injection method using octadecene as the solvent and various ligands, including oleic acid, benzene-1,4-dithiol, mercapto-benzoic acid and TOP, created quantum dots exhibiting photoluminescence in the green region of the visible spectrum. These quantum dots were characterized using UV-Visible Spectroscopy and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy. The oleic acid capped QD had a characteristic wavelength of 560 nm. While the mercapto-benzoic acid and benzene-1,4-dithiol capped QD had a characteristic wavelengths of 510 nm and 555 nm, respectively, all under the same operating conditions. For the purposes of device fabrication, the NN-Labs QDs were mostly used because their performance was much better than quantum dots synthesized in house. The fabrication of a hybrid light emitting diode has been developed with the structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/CdSe QD/Alq3/Al. The device has exhibited a turn-on voltage from 2-3 V with currents ranging from 4-5 mA. The PEDOT:PSS layer was deposited using spin coating and analyzed using Photoluminescence Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, and Surface Profiling. The layer produce is sufficient for device fabrication. To facilitate proper hole transport and a sufficient quantum dot layer, a PVK/QD composite solution was used to create a monolayer layer of quantum dots by phase separation of the solutes in the solution. Alq3 and Al were deposited using thermal evaporation techniques.

Book excerpt: The emergence of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals has generated great fundamental and technical interest in recent years. The size dependent emission property for Cadmium Selenide quantum dots renders it indispensable in the field of nanocrystal-based emitters used in electronic and bioelectronic devices. Investigation of these semiconductor quantum dots reveals the evolution of the electronic structure from an extended solid state to the molecular limit, an extremely important issue of basic and applied research in condensed matter physics. The work presented in this book mainly deals with the synthesis and characterization of chemically synthesized CdSe nanoparticles. A detailed investigation of the optical, structural and morphological properties of CdSe QDs and their correlation with both core and surface has been carried out. The theoretical aspect of quantum confinement and stability of CdSe quantum dots with organic and inorganic layers, are correlated to understand the surface modification aspects. Finally CdSe-polymer nanocomposites were discussed for their potential application in biomarkers and photo-electronic devices.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized and characterized for patterning applications as well as for photovoltaic devices. The QDs were patterned and embedded into various polymers to form fluorescent composites. Their photophysical properties were investigated in detail. Through template assisted deposition the QDs-polymer composites were patterned into fluorescent nanorods. CdSe QDs were combined with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a synthesized organic perylene derivative dye (N,N'-di(ethanethiol)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl diimide) (ETPTCDI) as a link between QDs and CNTs. Upon testing, the QDs-ETPTCDI-CNTs nanocomposite displayed photoactive properties. Photophysical quenching studies of QD-ETPTCDI-CNTs provided better understanding of the electron-hole transfer of each component in the nanocomposite. The nanocomposite material was patterned onto microelectrode devices for photocurrent measurements under an AM1.5 solar simulated light source. These nanocomposites can be used as photovoltaic devices. The preliminary characterization studies of the device show excellent photoresponse under AM1.5 solar simulated light. The band gap alignment of each component of the nanocomposite and the charge transfer kinetics are the key to efficient electron-hole transfer. Optimization of the semiconducting material's interface can potentially make these nanocomposites a system for photovoltaic-based devices.

Book excerpt: In this study, cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles have been synthesized using a one-pot noninjection reaction procedure in solvent medium 1-octadecene. This approach used a cadmium salt and 1-dodecanethiol, an organic sulfur, as the cadmium and sulfur sources, respectively, along with a long-chain organic acid (myristic acid, lauric acid, or stearic acid). The acid has dual effects as a surface capping ligand and a solubility controlling agent as well. UV-Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectrometry techniques were used to characterize the optical properties, along with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify the structure and size. Our newly developed synthesis procedure allowed for investigation of both regular and "magic-sized" CdS QDs by systematically controlling reaction parameters such as reactant type, reactant concentration, and reaction temperature. The organic sulfur (1-dodecanethiol) proved to be a useful sulfur source for synthesizing magic-sized CdS QDs, previously unreported. Several distinctive size regimes of magic-sized quantum dots (MSQDs), including Families 378 and 407, were successfully produced by controlling a small number of factors. Finally, the understanding of controlled Cd release in a MSQD formation mechanism is developed.

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, semiconductor quantum dots—small colloidal nanoparticles—have garnered a great deal of scientific interest because of their unique properties. Among nanomaterials, CdTe holds special technological importance as the only known II–VI material that can form conventional p–n junctions. This makes CdTe very important for the development of novel optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and lasers. Moreover, the demand for water-compatible light emitters and the most common biological buffers give CdTe quantum dots fields a veritable edge in biolabeling and bioimaging. Cadmium Telluride Quantum Dots: Advances and Applications focuses on CdTe quantum dots and addresses their synthesis, assembly, optical properties, and applications in biology and medicine. It makes for a very informative reading for anyone involved in nanotechnology and will also benefit those scientists who are looking for a comprehensive account on the current state of quantum dot–related research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the development of synthetic methods to create application ready quantum dots (QDs) in the infrared for biological imaging and optoelectronic devices. I concentrated primarily on controlling the size and size distribution of indium arsenide and cadmium arsenide QDs. In the nanocrystal community, classical nucleation and growth is often invoked to explain size focusing. However, this model lacks predictive power and contradicts what is known about the chemistry of QD growth. I try to relate my experimental approach and my conclusions to our understanding of the mechanism of particle growth. This approach led me to explore the role of precursor conversion rate in the growth of III-V QDs and to develop a continuous injection synthesis method that I used to make both III-V and cadmium arsenide QDs. Cadmium arsenide (Cd 3As 2 ) is a narrow gap semiconductor that can form QDs with tunable emission between 530nm and 2000nm. I developed a synthetic strategy to precisely control the size of Cd3As 2 QDs while maintaining a narrow size distribution. Continuous precursor injection was used to drive growth and suppress size broadening. The quantum yields of Cd3As 2 QDs produced using this method ranged as high as 80%, and their emission is tunable over a broad range with narrow linewidths. However, they were found to be unstable in ambient conditions. Nevertheless, by processing in inert conditions we were able to make a crude photodetector that demonstrates that Cd3As 2 QDs are sufficiently stable for use in optoelectronic devices. Although growth of a Cd3 P2 shell provided enough added stability to observe emission after ligand exchange into water, these core-shell structures do not seem to be robust enough for biological applications. Indium arsenide (InAs) QDs are more easily stabilized with a core-shell structure. However, the spectral linewidths are broad and existing synthetic techniques produce only small particles with limited spectral tunability. Models predicted that decreasing precursor reactivity would produce larger, more monodisperse particles. Therefore, I chemically modified the group-V precursor to reduce reactivity. I made a library of group-V precursors, and I developed a framework for comparing the QDs that they produced and measuring the kinetics of precursor conversion and particle growth. Although we successfully reduced precursor reactivity, we found that the effect on particle size was minimal and that the least reactive precursors produced particles with inferior size distributions. To find another way to try to improve III-V synthesis, I adapted the continuous injection method developed for making Cd3As 2. Using this strategy, I was able to produce InAs QDs with broadly tunable size and narrow spectral features. However, continuous injection ceases to drive particle growth beyond about 5nm in diameter. We examined why particle growth stops, and proposed a strategy to prolong growth and size focusing. Ultimately, the continuous injection technique allowed us to produce InAs QDs with infrared emission and narrow spectral features that were ideally suited for producing QDs optimized for deep tissue imaging in mice. By adding a shell of CdSe, CdS, or ZnSe, the quantum yield and stability were enhanced. These emitters allowed us to see biodistribution and biological processes occurring inside live mice. Although we found that precursor chemistry did not affect particle growth to the degree we hoped, we were able to produce application ready QDs via a continuous injection procedure. Continuous injection synthesis of QDs is a precise way to tune QD size while maintaining narrow size distributions. We have used this technique to produce QDs with the specifications required for high impact applications.
