Book excerpt: Synthetic, structural, spectroscopic, and redox studies of platinum(II) and palladium(II) compounds with mer-coordinating ligands have been undertaken in an effort to better understand the role of the metal and the ligands in controlling d^6/d^8 electron-transfer reactions. A series of Pd(pip2NCN)X (pip2NCNH=1,3-bis(piperdylmethyl)benzene) and [Pd(pip2NNN)X]X (X=Cl, Br, I) (pip2NNN=2,6- bis(piperdyl-methyl)pyridine) complexes are reported. Electronic spectra are consistent with stabilization of ligand-to-metal-charge-transfer states as the ancillary ligand is varied along the ClBr

Book excerpt: Understanding the reactivity of metal complexes with molecular oxygen will facilitate the development of catalysts that can enable the widespread use of molecular oxygen as an oxidant for organic synthesis. This thesis presents two new classes of reactions between metal complexes and molecular oxygen. Neutral five-coordinate Pt complexes were tested for reactivity in the presence of molecular oxygen. In arene solution, the complexes (t̳B̳u̳̳M̳e̳2̳ nacnac)PtMe3 (1, t̳̳B̳u̳M̳e̳2̳ nacnac- = [((4-tBu-2,6-Me2C6H2)NC(CH3))2CH]-), (M̳e̳3̳ Me-nacnac)PtMe3 (2, M̳e̳3̳ Me-nacnac- = [((2,4,6-Me3C6H2)NC(CH3))2CCH3]-), and (t̳B̳u̳2̳ PyPyr)PtMe3 (3, t̳B̳u̳2̳ PyPyr- = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-(2-pyridyl)pyrrolide) reacted immediately with oxygen to form peroxo species in which two oxygen atoms bridge between the metal center and a carbon atom in the ligand backbone. In contrast, no reaction between ( i̳P̳r̳2̳ AnIm)PtMe3 (4a, i̳P̳r̳2̳ AnIm− = [o- C66H4-{N(C6H3 i Pr2)}(CH=NC6H3 i Pr2)]−) or (M̳e̳3̳ AnIm)PtMe3 (4b, M̳e̳̳3̳ AnIm− = [o-C6H4- {N(C6H2Me3)}(CH=NC6H2Me3)]−) and oxygen was observed. As activation of oxygen by five- coordinate PtIV species was found to involve cooperation between the metal center and the ligand, the ability of the ligand to participate in the oxygen binding appears to be a vital component. Oxygen atom transfer reactions of the novel peroxo species are also presented. In a separate study, an unusual reaction involving the activation of both molecular oxygen and a C-H bond at the same metal center was investigated. Pd(P(Ar)(tBu)2)2 (15, Ar = naphthyl) was found to react with molecular oxygen at room temperature in arene solvent to form a hydroxide dimer in which one equivalent of phosphine per Pd was lost and the remaining phosphine was cyclometalated through the naphthyl ring. At low temperature, two intermediates were observed. The nature of these intermediates suggests a mechanism involving initial reaction of Pd(P(Ar) (tBu)2)2 with O2 followed by the C-H activation step. In a final chapter unrelated to oxygen reactivity, the generation and characterization of a gold III̳-alkene complex by NMR and X-ray crystallography is presented. Such species have been proposed as intermediates in catalytic reactions but until recently none had been observed.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to design complexes in which electrochemical reduction does not result in loss of the chiral ligand, five different bis(oxazoline) ligands were prepared (3, 5, 7, 8 and 9). 3 was found to have poor solubility and an exceedingly negative reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -2.38 V. Chemical reduction studies of 5 revealed that the bis(oxazoline) ligand is ejected during the reduction process. Compound 7 was found to have a reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -1.12 V. However, ejection of the chiral ligand occurs when other bis(oxazoline) platinum and palladium dichloride complexes are reduced. Therefore, a neutral PdClMe complex (8) with a reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -2.97 V and a cationic Pd(CH[subscript]3CN)Me complex (9) (Ep[subscript]c= -1.38 V) were also prepared. A platinum complex of the bidentate phosphine ligand was then investigated. Electrochemistry studies revealed that 11 undergoes a two-electron reduction process in which the ligand remains bound to the metal. The synthesis of Pt(DIOP)(trans-stilbene) through the chemical and electrochemical reduction of 11 further demonstrated that DIOP remains bound to platinum after reduction of 11.

Book excerpt: The importance of Pd-catalyzed C--H functionalization reactions for chemical transformations has been widely studied over the last several decades. Much of the research to date has focused on conventional Pd0/II catalytic cycles. However, more recent studies have shown that many transformations can also follow a PdII/IV catalytic cycle. High-valent PdIII and PdIV species are often proposed to be important intermediates in such transformations. C--H coupling reactions involving high-valent intermediates often involve the oxidation of a PdII species to a PdIII or PdIV complex, which can then undergo subsequent C--heteroatom bond formation. However, the need for harsh oxidants and reaction conditions in many of these reactions hinders their practical applicability. The focus of this work is to study the properties and reactivity of PdII, PdIII, and PdIV complexes through modifications of the supporting macrocyclic ligands. Another goal of this work is to probe the ability of these complexes to facilitate C--H activation and C--heteroatom bond formation reactions using environmentally benign oxidants. Our lab reported the synthesis and characterization of the first organometallic mononuclear PdIII complexes stabilized by the tetradentate ligand N,N'-di-tert-butyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)pyridinophane (tBuN4). In order to further probe the Pd chemistry with this class of ligands, we prepared ligands with modifications to the steric bulk on the amine groups. In the first study detailed in chapter 2, the synthesis and characterization of PdII and PdIII complexes supported by N,N'-di-neo-pentyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)-pyridinophane(NpN4) and N,N'-di-benzyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)-pyridinophane(BzN4) is reported. Interestingly, the spectroscopic and crystallographic property of the newly synthesized complexes falls between the tBuN4 and MeN4 complexes. The C--C and C--heteroatom bond formation reactivity of the NpN4 and BzN4 supported complexes is also similar to our group's previously reported complexes. We also prepared and studied a series of Pd complexes bearing a modified tetradentate pyridinophane ligand, tBuN3CH. Essentially, we have replaced one of the nitrogen donor atoms from the N4 ligand with a carbon atom and have also introduced a new C--H bond. Due to its expected positioning near the metal center, this bond has the potential to undergo intramolecular C--H bond activation. In order to study the reactivity of this ligand, electronic modifications were made by substituting various electron-donating and withdrawing groups in the para position to this new C--H bond. In chapter 3, the synthesis and characterization of a series of PdII, PdIII, and PdIV complexes stabilized by the N3CH ligand is reported. Interestingly, a spectroscopic and crystallographic study of the pRN3CHPdII(OAc)2 complexes reveals that the Cipso--H bond remains unactivated at the PdII stage. However, upon oxidation to PdIII, the Cipso--H bond is activated.Interestingly, we discovered that the aerobic oxidation of the PdII complex [pRN3CHPdII(MeCN)](BF4) leads to the formation of the PdIII complex [pRN3CHPdIII(MeCN)](ClO4)2 at room temperature. Surprisingly, the C--H activation reaction proceeds in the presence of oxygen without the need for external base. Furthermore, the moderate rate of the reaction allowed us to investigate the mechanism of the reaction by utilizing kinetics and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that C--H activation of the Cipso--H bond is the rate determining step of the reaction.

Abstract: Several cyclometalated Pt(II) isocyanide complexes containing C-deprotonated C DEGREESN DEGREESC ligands (C DEGREESN DEGREESC = 2,6-diphenylpyridine derivatives) were synthesized. These complexes display orange-red emissions with max at 582-619 nm and quantum yields of up to 26% in CH2Cl2 at room temperature. The incorporation of carbazole/fluorene/thiophene unit(s) to C DEGREESN DEGREESC ligands leads to minimized structural distortion of complexes in their excited states and thereby suppresses non-radiative decay pathways. The high thermal stability (Td >300 C) renders these complexes good candidates as phosphorescent dopants in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Red-emitting OLEDs with CIE coordinates of (0.650.01, 0.350.01) were fabricated by vacuum deposition, showing a maximum external efficiency of 12%. In addition, well-defined nano/microstructures were obtained from self-assembly of these complexes driven by π∙∙∙π, C-H∙∙∙π and C-H∙∙∙H-C interactions as observed in the crystal structures. Two series of organopalladium(II) alkynyl complexes containing a terpy (terpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) or C DEGREESN DEGREESC pincer carbene ligand (C DEGREESN DEGREESC = 2,6-bis(1-butylimidazol-2-ylidenyl)pyridine) were prepared. These complexes are non-emissive in solution at room temperature except that the one containing both C DEGREESN DEGREESC and pyrenylacetylide ligands shows phosphorescence (Φ = 0.3%) originating from intraligand state of the acetylide ligand. This could be attributed to the strong -donating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) in the pincer ligand that strongly destabilizes d-d state, the population of which provides an efficient non-radiative decay channel. To make comparison between Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with the two ligand systems, Pt(II) C DEGREESN DEGREESC alkynyl complexes were also prepared. They are emissive in solution and some display excimer emissions at high concentration (〖10〗 DEGREES(-4)-〖10〗 DEGREES(-3) mol 〖10dm〗 DEGREES(-3)). The X-ray crystal structures of [Pd(L)(CCPh)](〖PF〗_6) (L = terpy and C DEGREESN DEGREESC) revealed one-dimensional chain stacking of complex cations with alternating Pd(II)∙∙∙Pd(II) contacts of about 3.29-3.35 A and π-π interactions of about 3.4 A . Well-defined submicron/nanostructures were obtained from self-assembly of Pd(II) and Pt(II) alkynyl complexes driven by π-π interactions between aromatic moieties and/or metal∙∙∙metal interactions. DFT calculations on the optimized structures of [M(L)(CCPh)]+ (M = Pd(II) and Pt(II)) revealed the existence of metal∙∙∙metal closed-shell interactions. In addition, the complex containing the C DEGREESN DEGREESC ligand exhibits slightly enhanced metal∙∙∙metal interactions and larger "bonding" energy upon dimerization. Furthermore, spin-orbit coupling between singlet and triplet excited states is more effective which promotes rapid intersystem crossing. A new class of cyclometalated Au(III) complexes containing C-deprotonated C DEGREESN ligands (C DEGREESN = 2-phenylpyridine and its derivatives) and cis-chelating bis-NHC ligands was synthesized. These are the first examples of Au(III) complexes supported by cis-chelating bis-NHC ligands. They display emissions in solution under degassed condition at room temperature with &
