Equally well known is the difficulty in keeping up-to-date with the multifarious reactions and procedures that seem to be spawned at an ever-increasing rate. These can certainly be summarized on the basis of reviews under the headings of the individual transition metals. More useful to the bench organic chemist, however, would be the opposite type of concordance based on the structural type of the desired synthetic product. This is the approach taken in the present monograph, which presents for each structural entity a conspectus of the transition metal-mediated processes that can be employed in its production. The resulting comparative survey should be a great help in devising the optimum synthetic approach for a particular goal. It is presented from an essentially practical viewpoint, with detailed direc tions interspersed in the Houben-Weyl style. The wide scope of the volume should certainly encourage synthetic organic chemists to utilize fully the range and versatility of these transition metal-mediated processes. This will certainly be a well-thumbed reference book! R. A. RAPHAEL Cambridge University v Preface In recent years an enormous amount of work has been done on the catalysis of organic reactions by various transition metal species and on the organic reactivity of organo-transition-metal compounds.

Book excerpt: The research work presented here is focused on nanotechnological synthetic approaches for transition metal oxide nanomaterials and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis and adsorptive desulfurization reactions. Here, we discuss the controllable synthesis of functional nanomaterials and investigation of their structure-activity relationship in multiphase catalytic and sorption reactions. Among transition metal oxides, Co3O4 is well known for the presence of mobile oxygen, and thus is more reactive towards oxidation reactions. Aerobic oxidation under additive free conditions is highly desirable in organic synthesis reactions, from the viewpoint of green and sustainable chemistry. We demonstrate the activity enhancement of mesoporous cobalt oxide materials by substitutional doping of molybdenum ions. We discuss the surface chemistry in the production of active metal oxide nanoparticles and effect of lattice deformation on creating surface defects. High conversion and selectivity was achieved by controlling the surface area, Lewis acidity, and oxygen vacancy density of the solid catalyst in the liquid phase dehydrogenative coupling reactions. Synthesis of high surface area mesoporous cobalt molybdenum mixed metal oxide materials was accomplished using surfactant assisted inverse micelle method. The cobalt molybdenum oxide materials were investigated as a efficient desulfurization sorbent in a fixed bed reactor at low temperatures ( C).

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research consists of two major sections. The first section of this research is focused on developing novel synthesis methods, characterization, and catalytic applications of multi-functional transition metal oxides including manganese oxide nano-materials (2x2 tunel structured manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve), 3D hierarchical nano-architecture -MnO2 and cobalt oxides, and cobalt based materials. Manganese oxide octahedral molecula sieves (OMS) have ID open framework structures with various theoretical nano-scale tunnel size materials have been investigated extensively as low cost and environmentally benign ionic and molecular sieves and efficient redox catalysts. A novel and efficient solvent-free method has been developed to synthesize manganese oxides with 2 x 2 tunnel structures. The properties of the synthesized OMS-2 materilas have been compared with that synthesized by conventional reflux and hydrothermal methods. Epsilon manganese dioxides with controlled novel 3D architectures have been fabricated via a hydrothermal chemical reaction. The effects of reaction time and reaction temperature on the morphology of the final -MnO2 are investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the hierarchical nano-architectures are proposed. The magnetic properties of -MnO2 are also studied. Resides manganese oxides, a microwave-heating reflux route has been used to synthesize 3D flower like cobalt hydrotalcite-like compounds with layered structure and these compounds can be transferred into spinel structure of Co3O 4. Both materials show the electrocatalytic activity and stability for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. Therefore these materials have the potential to be electrocatyltic catalysts. The second section of the research is to study the microstructure of carbon films coated on the iron and graphite particles by a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method and the relationship between the microstructure of the carbon coatings and their effects on electrochemical properties.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, environmental concerns and the global energy crisis have become two of our greatest challenges. The main purpose of this dissertation research is to design highly active mesoporous materials that can efficiently catalyze environmental and energy related reactions. Surface properties can be easily tuned by thermal treatment and cation doping, resulting in improved catalytic activities. Synthesis and characterization of the materials, catalytic activities for carbon monoxide oxidation, oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions, and mechanistic studies are covered in this thesis. The first part describes the synthesis of mesoporous cobalt oxides through an inverse micelle route for low temperature carbon monoxide oxidation applications. The prepared material showed much better activity and stability compared with commercial cobalt oxide due to its nanoparticle nature and porous structure. The catalytic performance under both dry and moisture rich conditions were tested. Detailed characterization of the materials suggested that high surface areas and the presence of surface oxygen vacancies were critical for enhanced activities. In real systems, structured catalysts such as monolithic substrates coated with a layer of active material are used instead of powder form catalysts. To evaluate the potential of our catalysts to be used in practical catalytic devices, mesoporous metal oxides (MnOx, Co3O4, CeO2) were coated on cordierite substrate by dip coating and in-situ growth and were used as low temperature diesel oxidation catalysts. The resulting materials showed promising catalytic performance. The effect of particle size, loading amount and Cu doping on the catalytic performance are discussed in detail. In the last part, mesoporous cobalt oxides were used as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. If a catalyst can catalyze both reactions, it will have great potential in the application of rechargeable metal air batteries. Ni and Mn doping were introduced into the cobalt oxide material to increase the conductivity and active site population. The Ni incorporated cobalt oxide exhibited the best activity, which can be considered as a potential substituent for precious metal catalysts (Pt, Ir, Ru). Furthermore, the intrinsic structure-property relationships of the materials were established.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented here is focused on design, synthesis, and characterization of transition metal oxides for catalytic and energy applications. The first part is devoted to discuss catalytic applications of mesoporous manganese oxides and the second part is devoted to discuss novel solvent driven synthesis of sodium tungsten bronze nanomaterials for energy applications. From the standpoint of green chemistry, the investigation of simple, low cost, stable, environmentally friendly, and potentially active materials for complete oxidation reactions at low temperatures is highly desirable. In recent years, green chemical approaches have become an integrated part of daily life and implementation of this modern discipline led to momentous ecological benefits, innovations and a strengthened economy. My research is devoted to investigate potential materials in oxidative catalysts that resonate with the concepts in green chemistry. The first part of this thesis will discuss the importance of catalytic oxidation reactions, synthesis, and characterization of the mesoporous manganese oxide materials and their applications in a series of complete oxidation reactions. The projected decline in fossil fuels and growing global energy consumption demands alternatives for petroleum feedstock and sustainable conversion processes for energy production. Thus, applicability of mesoporous manganese oxides on complete catalytic oxidation of methane has been discussed. Secondly, complete catalytic oxidation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) which is an unsolicited byproduct emitted by diesel exhaust engines is discussed. In the second part of this thesis, design of novel, solvent driven in situ synthesis method of sodium tungsten bronze is discussed. Tungsten bronzes are well defined, unique class of non-stoichiometric compounds with exclusive characteristic properties. They have attracted much attention in the past few decades due to their wide variety of crystal structures and interesting electro-optic, photochromic, and super-conducting properties However, the synthesis of cubic sodium tungsten bronze nanomaterials with high conductivity is not much reported due to the limitations of high temperature synthetic approaches.
