Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and synthesis of multicomponent Pt-based nanomaterials with highly controlled structures have attracted extensive research attention, mainly due to their highly active catalytic properties. The performance enhancement of these catalytic systems largely requires the precise control over the structure with the lowest Pt amount yet high activity to mitigate the high cost of Pt-based nanomaterials. Specific surfactant molecules have been widely employed to manipulate the morphologies and assemblies of nanostructures. Thus rational designs of the surfactants become very significant. In nature, a lot of biomaterials evolved well-developed nanostructures with unique properties through long-time natural selection using biomolecules as the surfactant. Compared with traditional trial-and-error design, biomimetic design provides more rational controls leading to new synthetic design for nanostructures. In this thesis, synthesis and assembly of Pt-based nanocrystals and the mechanisms were studied. Chapter 2 introduces one-step synthesis of single-crystal PtNi octahedron with in situ developed highly concave feature and self-confined composition was studied which is optimal for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The combination of Ni facet segregation and oxygen etching of Ni-rich surface lead to the concave feature and confined Ni content. The concave PtNi nanocrystal exhibited a very high activity as well as a remarkable stability in ORR. Chapter 3-4 explores biomimetic approaches to achieve functional Pt nanostructures and their hierarchical assembly. In Chapter 3 a rational designed peptide was utilized to prepare an ultrathin Pt multiple-twinned nanowire network (MTNN) as an efficient electrocatalyst. In Chapter 4 we further demonstrate a biomimetic approach to explore the impact of higher order structures of surfactants on NC formation and alignment. Results show that at low concentration T7 peptide molecules (Ac-TLTTLTN-CONH2) form ST-turns and benefit the selective formation of cubic Pt NCs, and that -sheets favored under high concentration readily promote linear self-assembly of the cubic NCs along [100] direction. Tailoring the formation conditions of the secondary structures of biomolecules can realize better tuning of peptide concentration controlled NC behaviors via a process that is analogous to biological regulations in organisms. Great potential in regulating in vivo performance of non-biological substances and derived applications become possible.

They are ubiquitous construction materials, critical interconnects in integrated circuits, common coinage materials, and more. Excitingly, new uses for metals are emerging with the advent of nanoscience, as metal crystals with nanoscale dimensions can display new and tunable properties. The optical and photothermal properties of metal nanocrystals have led to cancer diagnosis and treatment platforms now in clinical trials, while, at the same time, the ability to tune the surface features of metal nanocrystals is giving rise to designer catalysts that enable more sustainable use of precious resources. These are just two examples of how metal nanocrystals are addressing important social needs.

Book excerpt: This book describes the biogenic and green synthesis of gold, palladium and platinum nanoparticles through a variety of methods. 80% of the world’s population use traditional medicinal plants as the primary form of healthcare. Biogenic nanoparticles are those particles which are synthesized by biogenic systems like plants, microbes, and fishes. Different plants possess different properties according to their use in fighting against disease. The biological synthesis of metal nanoparticles is mainly a strategy which is employed to protect against toxic and harsh effects that can often arise in the normal synthesis of such particles. The book explains the properties of gold, palladium and platinum metal nanoparticles and discusses the mechanisms behind biological synthesis. It emphasises the basic idea of various syntheses and will, therefore, be of particular support to potential researchers interested in plant synthesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials with dimensions reaching the nanoscale possess novel properties different from their bulk counterparts. Engineering nanomaterials to exploit their improved functions show important applications in catalysis, electrocatalysis, electronics, optoelectronics, and energy devices. One of the challenges to date is to develop methods for producing nanomaterials in a controllable and predictable fashion. We seek to develop novel biomimetic synthetic protocols for programmable nanomaterial synthesis, i.e., using biomolecules with specific material recognition properties to manipulate nanomaterial morphologies and structures. Starting with three Pt binding peptides with distinct recognition properties, i.e., a Pt material specific peptide BP7A and two Pt facet specific peptides T7 (Pt {100} facet specific) and S7 (Pt {111} facet specific), we demonstrate a rational creation of Pt bipyramids, a new type of shape for Pt nanocrystals. The BP7A peptide is found to be able to introduce twinning during Pt nanocrystal growth. We use it to generate single twinned seeds for Pt nanocrystals. Together with targeted facet stabilization using T7/S7 peptides, Pt {100} bipyramid and {111} bipyramid are successfully synthesized for the first time. We further utilize the twin introducing property of the BP7A peptide to generate ultrathin Pt nanowire with high twin densities. We show that the Pt nanowire possesses higher electrocatalytic activity and durability in oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reactions due to its one-dimensional nanostructure and the presence of dense twin defects, demonstrating the concept of defect engineering in nanocrystals as a strategy in the design of novel electrocatalyst. The organic-inorganic interface is a key issue in many fields including colloidal syntheses and biomimetics, the understanding of which can enable the design of new material synthetic strategies. We aim to understand how the Pt binding peptides modulate the formations of specific Pt nanostructures. We start with mechanistic investigations on S7 peptide's Pt {111} recognition property, and proceed to studying BP7A peptide's twin introducing property. With combined experimental and computational efforts, we identify the molecular origins of the biorecognition properties of these two peptides. Moreover, we extend extracted biomimetic principles to the rational design/selection of small organic molecules that deliver anticipated traits for controlled colloidal synthesis for other noble metals (Pd and Rh). Overall, we demonstrate the power of biomimetic synthesis in rationally creating nanomaterial structures with novel properties. Our mechanism studies demonstrate the rich information one can derive from biomimetic synthesis, and the broad applicability of biomimetic principles to engineering material structures for many potential applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionalized nanoparticles and their assembly have been the subject of intense recent research activity. The stability and assembly of functionalized nanoparticles are still challenges for practical applications. Polymers are excellent stabilizing agents which can be used in nanoparticles synthesis. This dissertation describes polymer mediated nanoparticles which synthesized by both chemical and photo reduction techniques. The synthesis methods and assembly of polymer mediated nanoparticles were systematically studied. Two kinds of polymers were used in this research: PAMAM dendrimer and hyperbranched polyethylenimine. PAMAM dendrimer was used as the host for the synthesis of FePt nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by chemical reduction. Magnetic and structural properties of the as-made and annealed samples were studied. The as-made FePt nanoparticles have the chemically disordered fcc structure and can be transformed into the chemically ordered fct structure after annealing. But the annealing process caused both the size and size distribution to increase. To prevent size increase during annealing, dendrimer mediated alloys were encapsulated in silica microspheres. Their magnetic properties can be manipulated by synthesis conditions. Polyethylenimine is a kind of hyperbranched polymer, which was used to encapsulate nanoparticles. With polyethylenimine, Pt and Co3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by photochemical processes. Their formation mechanisms were discussed. The chemical and electrochemical catalytic activity of polyethylenimine mediated Pt nanoparticles were studied. The results indicate that polyethylenimine is a good capping and reducing agent, and a carrier which improve samples stability and allows patterning. Ordered discrete magnetic nanoparticle arrays were also fabricated. Polyethylenimine was used as a stabilizer to synthesize magnetite nanoparticles. Polyethylenimine coating of magnetite nanoparticles can effectively prevent the aggregation of the nanoparticles. By combining the capillary filling technique with a magnetic field, polyethylenimine mediated magnetite nanoparticles form ordered assembly, in which the resolution of the pattern is doubled. The formation process of ordered structures was systematically investigated. This method is technologically feasible and scalable to make ordered magnetic nanoparticles over a large area. The result of this dissertation demonstrates that polymer stabilizers play an essential role in the synthesis of nanoparticles as well as their assembly.
